First look at Olivia Colman’s new movie

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of video games, I can’t help but draw parallels between my virtual adventures and the upcoming queer drama, “Jimpa”. Just like Hannah navigating Amsterdam’s gay community with her nonbinary teenager Frances, I’ve found myself exploring alien landscapes or bustling cities in search of hidden treasures, alliances, and self-discovery.

The Sundance Film Festival unveiled an initial snapshot featuring Olivia Colman and John Lithgow in the forthcoming queer drama titled “Jimpa“.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself immersed in the captivating tale where I, too, embark on a journey alongside Colman’s character. In this narrative, I am Hannah, who accompanies my nonbinary teenage companion Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to the enchanting city of Amsterdam to meet our cherished grandfather Jim – affectionately known as Jimpa. This elderly, flamboyant patriarch, residing in the heart of Amsterdam’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community, lives his life with unabashed zest and pride.

In the process of reconciling with her distant father and dealing with her mixed feelings towards him, Frances embarks on an exploration of the joys and risks that come with urban queer culture.

Yet, upon hearing that Frances wishes to spend a year overseas with Jimpa, Hannah finds herself compelled to reassess her views on child-rearing and ultimately face long-held narratives from the past.

On the Sundance site, an initial image was unveiled, featuring Lithgow’s title character tenderly embracing his daughter from behind, hinting at a heartwarming reunion between them.

Jimpa is directed by Sophie Hyde, who also co-wrote the script alongside Matthew Cormack.

The movie is set to make its debut on the global stage at Sundance, taking place from January 23 to February 2 of next year. As of now, a UK release date has not been disclosed.

At present, Colman is appearing on the large screen in the third installment of Paddington, titled “Paddington in Peru.” In this movie, she portrays the character of The Reverend Mother.

As I eagerly await the premiere, I shared with Digital Spy that the musical segment I’m part of proved to be a greater challenge than I initially anticipated.

She clarified that being able to both sing and play an instrument while also dancing is quite challenging.

Performing a single tune made me feel as if I was watching someone like Beyoncé perform live, complete with dance moves and vocals.

I was wearing a long skirt, and fortunately, our choreographer, Jen White, noted, ‘Fortunately, the length of your skirt conceals your feet,’ since I found myself saying, ‘To be honest, I can’t manage everything simultaneously.’

Jimpa is set to debut at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2025. Further details about its release in other parts of the world will be shared later on.
