Disgraced Sky News host Chris Smith tipped to replace John Laws at 2SM… after veteran broadcaster Steve Price said the station would be be ‘crazy to touch him’
As a seasoned broadcaster with a career spanning over three decades, I have seen it all – from the highs of ratings success to the lows of public scandal and personal struggle. The story of Chris Smith’s comeback is one that resonates deeply with me, not just because we share similar experiences in the industry, but also because of the courage and determination it takes to turn one’s life around.
The controversial ex-host of Sky News, Chris Smith, is being considered as a potential replacement for the late John Laws, a renowned figure in radio broadcasting.
89 laws were officially ended by the 2SM Super Radio Network based in Sydney, following a remarkable 71-year tenure in the radio industry.
According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, it appears that Smith will likely occupy the empty chair that has been vacant at the 9am timeslot for Laws, potentially taking control.
According to the publication, it’s expected that Smith’s appointment will become public knowledge soon, though an official statement hasn’t been released yet.
Smith was last on the airwaves as the host of the 2GB afternoon show, before he was sacked in 2022.
A seasoned broadcaster was initially put on suspension, followed by termination, from 2GB and Sky News due to accusations of inappropriate remarks towards female coworkers during a Christmas celebration with heavy drinking at the center of Sky News in Sydney’s downtown area.
Later on, Smith expressed regret over his embarrassing actions, attributing them to his battles with alcohol addiction and mental health issues.
In the late ’90s, he was let go from Nine’s A Current Affair, and in 2009, he was fired from 2GB, both times due to misconduct that occurred when he was intoxicated. Yet, he successfully restored his career on both instances afterward.
After parting ways with Sky News, the 62-year-old has made concerted efforts to regain the trust and admiration of his friends, relatives, and professional peers once more.
But this time, he has approached it differently and committed to completely overhauling his life.
After the party, Smith stopped consuming alcohol altogether. Over the past year and a half, he’s been regularly attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Moreover, he’s worked closely with two different psychiatrists for over 12 months to overcome his struggles.
Since then, he’s reappeared on the air, this time through digital platforms like TNTRadio and ADHTV. It’s said that his fellow workers have been impressed by his renewed commitment and sharpened focus.
The tip comes after veteran broadcaster Steve Price, who was also tipped to take on Laws’ role, told the Sunday Telegraph 2SM would be ‘crazy’ to hire Smith.
Last month, Price stated that it would be foolish for anyone to interfere with Chris Smith. He has had more than enough opportunities already, and a radio network owned by a family would be equally unwise to involve Chris Smith in any way.
In response to Price’s remarks made to Daily Mail Australia, Smith retorted by labeling the Project host as “uninteresting.
According to Smith, he comes across as incredibly dull and unremarkable during his broadcasts, and he’s yet to achieve any significant success in key time slots here in Sydney, as reported to Daily Mail Australia.
‘It riles him I have had great success and support.
‘He hates that I would [have a] comeback somewhere.
‘But redemption does exist and is real. Watch this space.’
While smith wouldn’t be drawn on the 2SM appointment, he admitted he was in a good place.
Smith shared with Daily Mail Australia that while he’s unsure of his future by 2025, he has multiple possibilities ahead, one of which being ADHTV – a place he adores and that’s rapidly expanding.
‘As for [second] chances, I have turned my life around in two years.
‘Zero alcohol for the first time and lots of mentors and psych assistance for the first time.
‘I have never had better clarity.
Daily Mail Australia has reached out to 2SM for comment.
At a heartfelt goodbye gathering in November, Laws expressed that he felt sad about departing, yet there were no regrets regarding his exit from the aviation sector.
‘I will really miss you,’ John sweetly told his loyal listeners.
I’ll surely cherish all the past moments that have unfolded over these many years; it’s been quite a journey.
He stated that he doesn’t find any grounds for dissatisfaction. It’s undeniably tough to part ways, and it’s clearly evident that he’s feeling the pain of saying farewell.
After his last performance, John confessed that saying goodbye to his long-spanning career was a mix of sweet satisfaction and lingering sadness when he spoke to Confidential.
‘I feel a bit sad but I feel okay,’ he said.
It will probably catch up with me in the next day or two but I’ve got no right to complain at all.
I’ve lived an exceptional life, enjoyed a successful career, and have a wonderful family to show for it. Consequently, I’m in a good place, but my time has come to an end.
John playfully remarked that he’d miss the interaction with his guests while chatting on-air, since he considered himself like a “pampered kid.
Since I’m used to being pampered like a spoiled child and crave some attention, I might really miss it. Could we perhaps arrange for someone to drop by and chat with me once a month? Just a thought.
