The Block backlash begins: Tiny country town with a population of 10,000 set to host 2025 season divided over show’s presence in the area
As a long-time resident of Daylesford and a passionate fan of The Block, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as the hit show is set to take over our little piece of paradise next year. Having grown up here, I’ve seen the town evolve from a quaint, tranquil retreat into a bustling weekend getaway destination.
Next year, The Block will travel to Daylesford, located centrally in Victoria, and residents are preparing for its arrival.
Nestled amidst verdant countryside, located approximately 111 km from Melbourne, this small town has emerged as a preferred weekend escape for city dwellers.
However, the local community leaders, representing a population of about 10,000 people, express worries about how the popular TV series might impact the town’s reputation.
Nine bought a plot, situated just off the town’s primary thoroughfare, which will see five teams constructing upscale residences entirely from ground-up.
Steve Rowe, head of the Daylesford Local Tourism Board, firmly believes that the event’s participation will generate additional exposure for the region, potentially attracting even more visitors. This influx could positively impact Daylesford’s economy by stimulating local businesses.
But he has also expressed his concern about Daylesford’s image.
‘Once filming wraps up, my interest will drop off,’ he told the Herald Sun.
However, during the manufacturing process, it’s guaranteed to attract folks to town; what matters is ensuring that it presents Daylesford in an appealing and authentic manner.
From my point of view, it’s all about our unique bond – when stars line up, it’s a win for all of us. We must seize these opportunities and thrive together as one united family.
In the meantime, Alexander Hancock, a local merchant in Daylesford, shared with the news outlet that not all residents were excited about the Nine show arriving in our town.
However, he agreed that the reality hit meant ‘free advertising’ for the tourist spot.
Initially, Daylesford was slated for hosting The Block’s 2024 season; however, due to a disagreement regarding plans, the production eventually shifted to Phillip Island instead.
Although the Hepburn Shire had given its approval for the planned site, Nine faced a challenge in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in September.
The network apparently had to scrap reservations valued at $500,000 for the show’s actors and production team, due to unforeseen circumstances.
A source from production shared with The Herald Sun that we’ve produced numerous hit series across various settings, yet we avoid places where we’re not welcomed.
‘Especially for the 20th series of The Block, which is so important.’
As per Realestate.com.au, the submission to Hepburn Shire Council for The Block 2025 contains plans for five fresh residences intended as a launching pad for contestants.
Participants must finish sketching out the main structure of a five-bedroom blueprint, which includes a home office (study), a common room (living area), and a carport (garage).
In addition, the premises will offer luxurious extras such as a sheltered outdoor space and a heated pool.
The submissions from Group Architects propose that the five residences will be similar, energy-efficient two-story structures with a strong emphasis on sustainability.
Earlier, the Blockheads undertook the job of refurbishing an already-existing building, whereas for the 2022 season, they were tasked with renovating houses that had been transported to the Gisborne location.
In December, Hygge Property’s 2,000 square meter plot of land received approval from the Victorian Planning Minister to construct five residential properties.
Daylesford, nestled within the picturesque Macedon Ranges area of Victoria, boasts a distinctive blend of scenic allure, historical appeal, and lively local ambiance.
As an ardent admirer, I’d put it this way: “Unlike many other destinations that bank on sun, sand, or snow for tourist appeal, I, Belle Property Daylesford’s principal director Will Walton (the one who sealed the deal with Nine), am proud to say that our enchanting locale, Daylesford, stands tall on its own merits.
Our city is well-known for its exceptional dining scene, boasting top-tier, award-winning eateries that have earned us recognition as a culinary hotspot.
Emphasizing food and beverages significantly boosts our tourism industry, and it additionally encourages the growth of our vacation home real estate market.
