Is this Gregg Wallace’s last TV appearance? Under-fire star makes the final edit of MasterChef: The Professionals as his future episodes of BBC show are axed
As a long-time viewer and admirer of MasterChef, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent events unfolding behind the scenes. Having spent countless hours watching the camaraderie and culinary expertise displayed on the show, it’s disheartening to see such turmoil engulfing one of its beloved hosts.
On Thursday evening, it seemed that Gregg Wallace might have presented MasterChef for the last time, following 19 years of service on the beloved BBC series.
The under fire star appeared in the MasterChef: The Professionals finale, announcing Dan Merriman as the champion after judging his and fellow finalists Chiara Tomasoni and George Birtwell’s dishes.
Despite some recent controversy, Gregg was the one who completed the last round of edits for the show, sharing the spotlight with fellow hosts Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti.
Last week, a MasterChef judge, who is 60 years old, announced that he would be taking a step back from hosting the show due to ongoing investigations into allegations of misconduct against him. This decision was made after almost two decades on the job.
In Monday’s broadcast, spectators speculated that the main character’s screen time on the program may have been reduced following the initial segment, as both Monica and Marcus provided their evaluations of the contestants but he was conspicuously absent.
However, during the grand finale, following their trip to Ireland midweek, Gregg played a significant role. This led to several comments on Twitter from viewers.
One viewer posed a question along these lines: ‘Couldn’t the majority of Gregg Wallace’s comments have been cut from the final episode of #MasterChefTheProfessionals? So, why wasn’t it done?’
Other viewers quipped that they were ‘watching the last few minutes of Gregg’s career.’
After consulting last week, the BBC chose to air the remaining episodes of Masterchef: The Professionals, as they wait for Banijay to complete their investigation.
During the run of “Professionals,” executives have decided to cancel the scheduled two Christmas special episodes of “MasterChef.” These episodes were planned to showcase celebrities such as Max George from The Wanted, Amy Walsh from Emmerdale, and Amy Dowden from “Strictly Come Dancing.
Following further allegations, it’s been decided that Gregg Wallace’s “Big Weekends Away” program will no longer be available on Channel 5’s streaming service, My5, due to misconduct concerns regarding the presenter’s behavior during the production of the series.
It appears they’ve been reviewing upcoming episodes of MasterChef, which haven’t aired yet, for any sexually suggestive remarks made by Wallace.
A representative from BBC shared with the Mail: “MasterChef significantly impacts the contestants who participate, and it’s not just about a single person.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I must admit, I’m intrigued by the mysterious next move of the BBC regarding their upcoming season of MasterChef, which was recently filmed and wrapped up just last week. What exciting twists and turns will this culinary journey bring? Only time will tell!
Gregg may be completely erased from the new series so it can be aired, TopMob revealed last week.
Previously, Gregg and John Torode, who is 59 years old, had filmed a series for aspiring chefs last month. However, it appears that footage featuring Gregg, aged 60, may be removed from the tapes before its broadcast, which is scheduled for next year.
However, an industry source informed Mail Online that the show can still be saved, with the possibility of editing out Wallace completely from future episodes under deliberation.
In simpler terms, this implies that the series, for which Banijay has invested a substantial amount to produce, wouldn’t need to be discarded or scrapped.
According to the source, Torode and Wallace’s feedback sessions for the contestants’ dishes were recorded individually.
It was mentioned that John and Gregg were typically filmed using different cameras. Editing could involve cutting between any two shots, or wider shots encompassing both of them. However, eliminating Gregg from the footage completely can be challenging, but it’s not an insurmountable task.
On Friday, Chef Torode traveled abroad to carry on with the show’s filming, while Chef Anna Haugh took over for Wallace during his absence.
The filming for the upcoming series wrapped up last Tuesday afternoon, and it is scheduled to air in spring 2025.
It is now unclear when the BBC will air the recently recorded episodes.
According to reliable sources, they stated that things could not have turned out any better. One source added that under the given conditions, it went exceptionally smoothly.
On this occasion, it was Anna Haugh, a well-known figure, who had graced our stage previously, joining John to provide feedback for the competitors.
The production team aimed to maintain a tranquil environment on set during filming, ensuring it was comfortable for our untrained contestants.
It would not be an unprecedented move for a BBC programme to erase its stars from the screen.
In 2023, during the run of RuPaul’s Drag Race, a popular reality television series featuring drag queens, one competitor was excluded following allegations of unsuitable conduct that surfaced prior to the show’s broadcast.
Although TV host Jay Blades, who was accused of physically and emotionally abusing his wife earlier this month, has not been seen in any pre-recorded episodes of The Repair Shop that have aired since.
Previously a grocer named Gregg has refuted allegations involving inappropriate sexual behavior. However, these claims are currently being examined through an independent investigation led by the prestigious London law firm Lewis Silkin, who were commissioned by the MasterChef manufacturing company Banijay.
On Wednesday, Torode finally spoke up, yet chose not to back his longtime TV co-worker, instead expressing full support for the investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, inappropriate behavior, and offensive language.
He said it had been ‘hard’ to keep working after hearing of the allegations.
