Stephen King’s most claustrophobic short story is getting a film adaptation
As a die-hard Stephen King fan who’s seen more adaptations of his works than I’ve had hot dinners, I can confidently say that we’re living in a golden age for King enthusiasts! The latest adaptation in the pipeline is “Autopsy Room Four,” which, if done right, could make me sleep with one eye open for weeks.
Could you imagine a point when every novel or short story by Stephen King has been brought to life on stage or screen? It certainly appears that we might be getting there, and I can’t help but get excited about it! Just recently, Deadline Hollywood announced that an adaptation of King’s “Autopsy Room Four” is in the works. This short piece is part of his “Everything’s Eventual” collection.
As per the source, the upcoming film titled “Autopsy Room Four” is set to be helmed by the rising British director, Ranjeet S. Marwa. Notably, his past short film, “The Man Who Loved Flowers“, was influenced by some of Stephen King’s works. Additionally, Marwa has directed other films such as “Spring Lakes” and “Dig Me No Grave“, which have been successfully acquired by distributors.
Initially penned for a limited-edition collection in the late 90s, “Autopsy Room Four” later appeared in Robert Bloch’s anthology titled “Psychos”. Subsequently, it was also included in King’s book “Everything’s Eventual”, published in 2002.
The narrative centers around a character who undergoes a near-death incident and subsequently finds himself confined within an autopsy room, more precisely, enclosed within a body bag. It’s hard to envision a scenario more terrifying than that, particularly for someone with a fear of confined spaces. The story “Autopsy Room Four” presents us with a chilling depiction of being imprisoned within one’s own body, creating an intense and unsettling reading experience.
Previously, the narrative has been transformed for visual media into a short film and an episode on TNT’s series titled “Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King”. Interestingly, the events that set the story in motion differ between these two adaptations. In the short movie, the protagonist gets hurt due to a golfing mishap, whereas in the TNT episode, he plunges into a catatonic condition after being bitten by a venomous snake.
It seems that this would complement flawlessly with the “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” episode titled “The Autopsy”, as well as the movie named “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”.
As a devoted fan, I can’t contain my excitement! This latest adaptation isn’t the only Stephen King masterpiece in the pipeline. In the year 2025, we’ll be treated to not one but two adaptations: “The Monkey” and “The Life of Chuck,” which are both based on some of his short stories. HBO is also developing a prequel series for “It,” titled “Welcome to Derry,” and Mike Flanagan is working on a brand-new television series for Amazon, centered around “Carrie.” It’s a King-dom that just keeps expanding!
