The sequel, which fans have been waiting for a long time, finally has a release date. It’s coming out 40 years after the first movie, and some of the original actors will be back.
According to initial reports, Spaceballs 2 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 23, 2027. It will be released alongside the Warner Bros. thriller F.A.S.T., featuring Brandon Sklenar and Juliana Canfield. The film will also be released shortly before the The Legend of Zelda movie, which is set to open in early May.
The Plot for Spaceballs 2 Remains Under Wraps
While the story for Spaceballs 2 is still under wraps, we know Josh Greenbaum, who directed Will & Harper, is directing. The script is being written by actor Jonathan Van Ness, known from Frozen, and the writing duo Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, who worked on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
The movie’s title and storyline are currently being kept secret. However, sources say the title is indeed the movie’s name, and the plot details reveal what the story is about. An earlier description called the film a complicated sequel – not a prequel or a complete restart, but a continuation of the series with some new elements.
While details about the plot are still under wraps, several original cast members are returning for Spaceballs 2. Mel Brooks, the director of the first Spaceballs, will once again play both Yogurt, a humorous take on Yoda, and President Skroob. Rick Moranis is also confirmed to reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet, marking his first on-screen appearance in three decades, since Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves in 1997. Lord Dark Helmet is a comedic parody of Darth Vader from Star Wars, instantly recognizable by his ridiculously large helmet.
Several Returning Stars Are Featured in Spaceballs 2
The film will also star returning favorites Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Queen Vespa, and George Wynzer as Colonel Sandurz. Joining them is Lewis Pullman, Bill Pullman’s son, who you may recognize from Thunderbolts. Gad will also appear in an as-yet-unspecified role, alongside new cast members Keke Palmer (known from The ‘Burbs) and Anthony Carrigan (Superman).
In addition to starring, Gad also produces the project with Greenbaum, Salter, and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody. Hernandez, Samit, and Adam Merims serve as executive producers.
Mel Brooks, along with Ronny Graham and Thomas Meehan, wrote the original Spaceballs. The movie playfully imitated popular science fiction films and series like Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Transformers, and Planet of the Apes. A particularly memorable part of the film was John Candy’s performance as Barf, a half-man, half-dog character inspired by Chewbacca. Fans will greatly miss him in the upcoming movie.
Spaceballs 2 will hit theaters on Apr. 23, 2027.
