Exclusive: The Rings of Power stars tell us about playing Galadriel and Sauron, the status of season 3

As a die-hard fan and devotee of Middle-earth since my childhood, I have to say that the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been nothing short of magical. The epic battle between Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Sauron (Charlie Vickers), reminiscent of a chess game with cosmic stakes, left me on the edge of my seat.

In the finale of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” second season, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) confronted her ancient adversary, Sauron (Charlie Vickers), their old friendship turning into a fierce battlefield. During this conflict, Sauron managed to escape with the Nine Rings destined for mortal men. However, Galadriel refused to hand over the Three Elven rings and instead chose to leap from a cliff rather than surrender them.

In the third season, Sauron’s influence expands significantly as he lays waste to the Elven city of Eregion and incorporates Adar’s orc army into his forces. However, the elves aren’t simply surrendering; it appears that they are fortifying Rivendell, a place well-known to fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, towards the end of the season.

In our conversation with Morfydd Clark and Charlie Vickers, we delved into their experiences portraying Galadriel and Sauron respectively, insights gained during the initial two seasons, and the possibility of another season ahead. Dive into our exclusive chat beneath!

WinterIsComing: Now that we’re a couple months out from The Rings of Power season 2, if you guys had a name one highlight either from your stories or anybody else’s, what would it be?

Morfydd Clark expressed excitement about two key moments in Episode 7: the intense battle sequence, and Elrond’s heart-wrenching understanding that Durin would not return. Additionally, she mentioned a memorable character, Damrod the troll.

As a devoted fan, let me share my thoughts: “I’ve expressed this before, but the scene between Galadriel and Elrond was truly captivating for me. When Elrond takes charge, there’s a brief yet impactful moment – one might even call it a small highlight, though significant nonetheless. Picture this: you’re in the war room, and Elrond is pondering where to deploy his forces. The door swings open, and in strides Elrond, exuding an undeniable air of sassiness. A big moment, indeed!

Charlie Vickers: “It seems he recognizes his situation as being trapped in the rabbit hole again. He acknowledges that power has tainted him, yet finds himself too deeply entrenched and indifferent. He maintains a firm belief that, despite potentially destroying Eregion, it’s for the ultimate benefit of Middle-earth. However, he knows that some questionable actions may be necessary to accomplish this greater good.

Morfydd Clark: “Indeed, she conveyed her feelings quite openly. Regrettably, there seems to be an ongoing bond. I believe he is aware of her true self, as she was candid with him. Thus, he will maintain some influence over her, and she’ll need to keep resisting it.

Charlie Vickers: “What appeals to me is a sense of playfulness…The gravity of the subject matter doesn’t necessarily dictate that you become somber or withdrawn; by ‘withdrawn’, I mean just like spending time alone. I discovered an intriguing aspect where, even when portraying cruel and malicious actions (as I did frequently in the second season), I could still infuse a sense of humor and liveliness throughout, and surprisingly, this makes it easier.

Morfydd Clark: “Absolutely, and I believe this process has been an excellent practice in maintaining intention, as the elves only speak when it truly matters. Therefore, every word must carry significance. It’s quite engaging to discover various nuances and subtleties within such certainty.

Charlie Vickers: “I’m sorry, but I can’t reveal those details. However, I did ask our showrunner Patrick McKay what we could share, and he said we could tell you that they’re currently working on it. They’re eager to share more when the time is right, but at the moment, they’re deeply engrossed in writing the third season. So, I suppose we’ll find out something soon.

Appreciate the time given by Morfydd Clark and Charlie Vickers in our conversation! As soon as there’s news about the next season of The Rings of Power, rest assured, we’ll share it with you right away. It would indeed be a delightful surprise for Christmas.
