Cult Aussie movie starring Heath Ledger and Rose Byrne set to get sequel 25 years on
As a devoted admirer of Australian cinema, especially the groundbreaking works of our talented local filmmakers, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming sequel to the iconic 1999 movie “Two Hands”. This film, which launched the careers of Heath Ledger and Rose Byrne, was a masterpiece that has only grown in popularity over the years.
25 years after its initial release, the highly influential 1999 Australian film “Two Hands,” starring Heath Ledger and Rose Byrne, is now in development for a sequel.
In the film, I had the pleasure of watching a 19-year-old Heath and Rose, where they delivered a captivating performance in an unconventional and thought-provoking gangster tale that’s gained a devoted fanbase over time.
Australian filmmaker Gregor Jordan has completed the script for a sequel, as he shared with The Sydney Morning Herald. He is the one who wrote and directed the original film.
‘We have a script that I think is really good. It brings it into the modern day,’ Jordan began.
Attempting a sequel five years from now might not have been successful, but after 25 years seems fitting instead.
Jordan added he hoped to bring back some of the actors from part one to reprise their roles.
Tragically, Heath Ledger, who passed away due to an overdose of prescription medications in 2008, played the main character in the film, making it impossible for him to return to portray Jimmy, the gangster delivery man.
Among the actors who might return for another performance are Rose Byrne, Bryan Brown, Susie Porter, and David Field.
Jordan commented that he believed Heath and Rose, aged 45, were ideally suited for their parts, as their on-screen characters developed a romantic relationship while evading Sydney criminals, headed by Bryan Brown.
Heath made it extraordinary due to his exceptional acting skills and magnetic screen presence, much like Rose who was also brimming with talent.
In Hollywood, both actors utilized the movie as a stepping stone for their careers; Heath later became renowned for his roles in classic films like The Dark Knight and 10 Things I Hate About You.
Simultaneously, Rose has made an appearance in numerous well-known films such as Bad Neighbors and Get Him to the Greek.
2022 found me, a die-hard fan, reminiscing about my all-time favorite actor, Heath Ledger, as Susie Porter shared her heartwarming tale from their collaboration on the film “Two Hands.” What an unforgettable journey it was working alongside this cinematic genius!
On the 14th anniversary of his passing, the 53-year-old reminisced about her former colleague, who she remembered as incredibly imaginative and generous.
She shared with Daily Mail Australia that it was an extremely unfortunate incident involving Heath that took place in 2008.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my deep sorrow. It seems we’ve tragically bid farewell to an extraordinary artist – an individual whose talent extended far beyond the realm of acting. He wasn’t merely a fantastic performer; he was a remarkable human being. His creativity and compassion were truly captivating. Susie added this poignant sentiment.
She emphasized again, “What a shame it is that someone as wonderful as him had to leave us. I found him incredibly kind while working together.
It’s unfortunate to think about all the accomplishments he might have made, the things he could have experienced afterwards, and the impact on his family.
In 1999, the movie “Two Hands” earned the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film. Prior to its U.S. release on DVD, it had been showcased at the Sundance Film Festival.
Heath died in 2008 after he accidentally overdosed on sleeping pills at his Manhattan apartment.
Over time, since it first came out, the movie has amassed a massive fan base who consider it a cult classic, and it’s frequently shown at international film festivals and exclusive cinematic events worldwide.
