Black Doves episode 2 recap: ‘A Little Black Dove’
As a fan who’s been following this thrilling series from the start, I must say that episode 2 of Black Doves felt like a rollercoaster ride through time! The pacing was different, but it served to flesh out Helen’s backstory and provide insights into why she’s involved in this dangerous game.
In episode 2 of “Black Doves,” titled “A Little Black Dove,” the story unfolds a decade back, starting with the year 2014. Here, we find Helen (portrayed by Keira Knightley) at a job interview for a translation role. She candidly discusses the inconsistencies in her resume, and it appears that the interviewer has some insider knowledge about her past, suggesting a tragic event involving her stepsister taking the life of their stepfather.
Viewing episodes 1 and 2 consecutively creates a noticeable shift in tempo, almost like hitting the pause button. Recall, Helen and Sam (played by Ben Whishaw) were on the verge of confronting the individual responsible for killing Helen’s partner, Jason (Andrew Koji).
In summary, despite attempting to depart from the gathering, Helen receives a phone number from a man. He instructs her to call a woman named Reed (played by Sarah Lancashire). The man suggests she should inform Reed that she is a “little Black Dove.” This seems to be the start of how Helen comes to work as a spy for the Black Doves organization.
At a later point, Helen encounters Mrs. Reed (who is presumably married or in a partnership), marking their initial meeting. Mrs. Reed provides additional details about the program and extends an invitation to Helen to participate.
In the following scene, she’s found attending a conference at a hotel, where her future husband, Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchar), is delivering a speech. Later that day, she collects a name tag labeled as ‘Helen Dawson’. That evening, Helen encounters Wallace at the hotel bar and they spend time together. After their encounter, she retrieves data from Wallace’s laptop.
Later on, Helen encounters Sam for the initial time in the hotel parking area. Sam is there to pick up Helen and drive her to the train station. However, Helen darts back to their room to grab something she had overlooked. Afterward, she returns, spending the entire night with Wallace instead.
In that manner, Helen secured her position, encountered the man who later became her spouse, and met a particularly significant individual named Sam. While this information might seem extensive, it’s crucial to comprehend the reasons behind Helen’s current actions.
Currently, Sam takes Helen to Elmore Fitch’s (Paapa Essiedu) residence, suspected murderer of Jason, only to find it oddly clean and empty. It seems strangely convenient that they discover a bullet casing with prints on it. At the last moment, Sam pulls Helen towards him, fires out the window, and leaps after her from the building into the river below. The explosion of a bomb set off by a Christmas ornament follows close behind. Later, Sam drives Helen back home, expressing regret for leading her straight into a trap.
Following his arrival home, Elmore Fitch makes an unexpected visit to Helen’s residence with a sinister intention: to harm her. In the course of a short scuffle, he brandishes a firearm and demands from her either a pinhold video camera or information about its location. He mentions that he is seeking someone named Kai-Ming Chen (also known as Isabella Wei). The individuals he’s associated with suspect Helen has some connection to the matter, but the reasons and extent of this association remain uncertain.
Elmore openly confesses to murdering Jason, yet he remains secretive about who had hired him for the task. Instead of Helen, it’s reported that she ended Jason’s life in the garden shed. I don’t have much information at hand, but what I do know is that Essiedu has a promising potential to portray Severus Snape exceptionally well in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.
The next day, Sam encounters Lenny (Kathryn Hunter), a former employer he had not seen since leaving London seven years prior. Lenny suspects that Sam failed to carry out an assignment involving Hector Newman (Luther Ford) many years ago. Now, one of the assassins who attempted to kill Helen at Jason’s apartment, Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), has threatened Sam’s life. In addition, Lenny herself issues a threat against Sam. If he doesn’t eliminate Hector, both Williams and another assassin will target Michael (Omari Douglas), Sam’s former partner.
Wallace has a conversation with a coworker, who shares that the Chinese suspect the Americans are responsible for the death of Ambassador Chen. Wallace considers this notion, yet he’s apprehensive as it might hold some truth.
In a while, Sam convenes with Reed and themselves regarding the incident involving Jason. They are working hard to uncover any connection between Jason and Kai-Ming, who has gone missing. Helen storms away, but Reed emphasizes to Sam that it’s crucial they ensure Helen’s safety, despite her unusual actions.
That fateful evening, I find myself surreptitiously observing my husband at a gathering. Wallace confides in Stephen Yarrick (Sam Troughton) that Phillip Bray, the unfortunate soul who met his end, had contacted him regarding Yarrick potentially being entangled in the assassination of the Chinese Ambassador. Wallace is determined to uncover the truth, yet he’s reluctant to betray a friend so quickly. Yarrick vehemently denies any involvement, but my curiosity gets the better of me and I trail him from the event.
Subsequently, she goes to the spot where Jason met his end – the bench. In a brief glimpse into the past, we witness Helen revealing her identity as the Black Dove to Jason in their shared bed. Essentially, she admits to being a spy. It’s unclear whether this is why Jason was murdered, but it seems likely that he knew her secret.
Following Williams’ renewed threat against Michael, Sam chooses to accept Lenny’s proposal to eliminate Hector. Upon reaching the compound, however, Sam discovers it has already been assaulted. Hector’s men have met their demise. As Sam navigates through the compound, he stumbles upon a video camera focused on a bed. He winds back the tape and sees Hector departing with Kai-Ming, the Ambassador’s daughter, just before the gunfire erupts. On the recording, Hector can be heard saying, “It’s the Clarks.” (This version aims to make the text more conversational and easier to understand.)
Who are the Clarks?
It appears that this situation has developed new aspects, and it seems like Sam, Helen, Wallace, Reed, and other primary characters are each becoming entangled in this mystery in various ways.
Up next is Black Doves episode 3! We’ll see how it all shakes out.
