The Wheel of Time season 3 teaser breakdown: Rhuidean visions and a blood bath in Tar Valon
As a die-hard fan of The Wheel of Time series, I must say that this latest trailer for season 3 has left me absolutely spellbound! With my years of immersion in the world of Randland and its intricate web of characters, I can’t help but feel like I’ve just stumbled upon a hidden shrine dedicated to my favorite fantasy universe.
During the weekend, Amazon Prime Video unveiled the initial trailer for season 3 of “The Wheel of Time,” their fantasy series inspired by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s book collection. Over its first two seasons, “The Wheel of Time” has been steadily enhancing and faithfully adapting its source material to bring a richly detailed fantasy realm to life on screen. However, judging from this trailer, we might be in for even more spectacular sights.
At the core of “The Wheel of Time” is a young man named Rand al’Thor, who learns he’s a prophesied figure known as the Dragon Reborn, fated to combat the malevolent forces of the Dark One. The initial two seasons primarily revolve around Rand accepting his heavy destiny, while his companions navigate their separate journeys. In season 3, Rand encounters a fresh hurdle: securing the backing of influential powers to aid him in his struggle.
In essence, Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time” mainly follows the fourth book in Jordan’s series, “The Shadow Rising,” focusing on Rand’s adventure into the desert homeland of the Aiel people to gain their support. The trailer offers numerous glimpses of this journey, as well as an array of other intriguing elements. Amazon Prime Video might have labeled it a “teaser,” but it contains such a wealth of details that many full-length trailers would struggle to match its depth.
Let’s delve into the details! We’ll be scrutinizing the Dragon Reborn’s comeback trailer frame by frame, uncovering any concealed mysteries that lie within. Join us on this thrilling journey through the Aiel Waste, Tar Valon, and other intriguing locales.
There will be SPOILERS for the fourth Wheel of Time book, The Shadow Rising, below.
The Wheel of Time season 3 teaser trailer breakdown
The trailer commences with an explosive introduction: Indeed, that is Rhuidean! Known as a ruined Aiel city and playing a significant role in “The Shadow Rising”, Rhuidean is a place steeped in ominous magic and prophecy. When Rand stands before the Aiel community and is declared the ‘car’a’carn’ (leader of leaders), he is compelled to travel to Rhuidean to endure a sequence of visions as proof that he is the long-awaited figure foretold by their prophecies.
Last year at Comic Con, showrunner Rafe Judkins confirmed that the series was adapting the Rhuidean section from “The Shadow Rising,” and his enthusiasm for it was palpable. A significant portion of this trailer focuses on the visions experienced by Rand and Moiraine during their travels there, which explains why the teaser begins with such a panoramic shot. Take a look at that mist! This promises to be a mysterious, unusual journey.
A few other details to note: there’s one Maiden of the Spear on the right side of the image. It may be Aviendha, an Aiel woman we met in the second season; she has her own relationship with Rhuidean in the novel. But it’s hard to be certain from just this one shot. The person with the hat beside Rand is probably Moiraine. As for the Aiel, the main thing I’m curious about is whether the man to Rand’s right is Rhuarc, a recurring character in the books and one of the key Aiel chieftains.
Regarding Moiraine, it seems she’ll be experiencing her own visions at the location of Rhuidean. There’s an intuition that the scene where she appears to be floating in water might have a connection to those visions. The lighting in this shot mirrors some scenes featuring Moiraine and Rand, which are probably taken from Rhuidean in the trailer.
In our upcoming scene, we find three massive stone female figures, posed as if they are conducting energy, within a grand structure. These statues bear a striking resemblance to the Aes Sedai, evident by the gemstones on their foreheads, similar to Moiraine’s adornments from season 1. As the scene unfolds, we catch a glimpse of a quartet of women strolling away from the statues; two are dressed in yellow robes, one in a dark, coat-like garment, and the fourth in a deep blue coat. It’s plausible that these ladies are Aes Sedai of various affiliations, but the quick sequence makes it difficult to discern their specific identities.
From what I can gather, it appears this setting could be Tar Valon, possibly an unfamiliar section of the White Tower. It’s hard to think of many locations in the world boasting such colossal statues of Aes Sedai.
In the sequence that follows, Moiraine is depicted in a dark blue cloak, standing on a bustling city street during a rainstorm with thunder echoing above. To my observation, this setting appears to be Tar Valon. It seems plausible that Moiraine and several other characters will either initiate the season here or make their way to this location in one of the early episodes. I’ll elaborate on the reasons soon.
This character appears to be an unusual depiction of Rand. It’s evident that it’s Rand, but his attire and hairstyle are unfamiliar. Given the circumstances within Rhuidean, where he might encounter visions revealing ancient knowledge about the world, including possible insights into his past lives, this could explain the change in his appearance. Whether it represents Rand as Lews Therin Telamon or a different existence, I find it highly intriguing!
As an experienced reader of fantasy novels, I must say that this scene seems quite typical in the genre: Moiraine’s warder Lan standing grimly in the Aiel Waste, donning a poncho and keeping his sword sheathed for now. The mystery surrounding what has put him in such a mood is intriguing, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s something related to their ongoing journey or perhaps a personal matter. As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in these types of stories, I find myself eagerly anticipating the revelation of Lan’s thoughts and feelings, as his stoic demeanor often hides a deep well of emotions.
In this scene, you see Liandrin, a character from season 2 who was revealed as a covert servant of the Black Ajah, a group aligned with the forces of darkness. While I won’t delve into specific spoilers, season 3 will explore events in Tanchico, a coastal city, where it seems likely Liandrin plays a significant role, given her appearance here and the distinctive styles worn by her and other women nearby. The city of Tanchico will have its unique charm, as suggested by various hints dropped throughout this trailer.
Despite her allegiance to the Black Ajah, which wil undoubtedly be revealed to many of her Aes Sedai sisters early in season 3 (Nynaeve, Elayne, and Egwene escaped her trap with the Seanchan last season, and they’ll surely tell everyone about it), Liandrin is still wearing red here, including her Aes Sedai ring. Even when she’s been ousted as a traitor, she’ll probably keep on wearing the trappings of the Red Ajah like armor, fooling anyone she can.
Coming up next, we find Elayne Trakand donning a royal crown. As the heiress to Andor, a strong kingdom whose capital is Caemlyn, it’s probable that this event unfolds within its city limits. Carrying a crown about seems unlikely for Elayne.
Here are a few options for paraphrasing the given sentence in a more natural and easily understood way:
In this instance, Siuan Sanche, the Aes Sedai leader, poses a question that hints at mystery: “One wonders just how far the Shadows have spread their influence here.” The scene depicted could be interpreted in two ways. It might show Siuan seated on the Amyrlin Seat within the Hall of the Sitters, with her Keeper, Leane Sharif, nearby…or it could depict someone else occupying the White Tower’s highest chair.
The individual occupying the Amyrlin Seat appears to be dressed in red, leading one to speculate if it could be Liandrin Guiraile or another Red Ajah member envisioning themselves in that prestigious position of authority. If true, this presents a significant question about who the Aes Sedai standing beside her in white may be. Is she perhaps a member of the White Ajah? Could this potentially be our first glimpse of Alviarin, a White sister and close ally to Liandrin?
As I watch, our protagonist, Moiraine, gently retrieves a radiant orb from the sands before me. An intricate tapestry of mystical energy begins to course through this enigmatic artifact, leaving me uncertain whether we are in the Aiel Waste or the realm of dreams, known as Tel’aran’rhiod.
Regarding the sphere, I have my own ideas about it. It could possibly symbolize the series’ interpretation of the Choeden Kal, a significant artifact that appears later on. The keys to the Choeden Kal are said to be small figurines, one male and one female, each holding a tiny crystal orb. In this adaptation, it seems like they might have replaced these figurines with just the crystal orbs themselves.
In the following scene, a woman appears to be channelling at a large rock formation, but I’m not entirely convinced this is Moiraine. Here are two reasons why: Firstly, the woman’s skirt appears worn and frayed, which doesn’t match any of Moiraine’s outfits shown in the trailer. Secondly, there seems to be a disconnection between this scene and the one that precedes it, as the channelling woman isn’t holding any objects. If you examine the scene frame by frame, you’ll notice that she has both arms extended. Unless Moiraine is only holding the orb in one hand at this moment, I suspect it’s someone else. Additionally, the Choeden Kal is so hazardous that even Moiraine should avoid touching it directly.
It seems plausible that this character is Aviendha, as in the books, she possesses the ability to channel, a storyline which begins in “The Shadow Rising”. Here, it appears she might be facing or exploring this aspect of her character.
Another interesting aspect to consider: The patterns in this scene seem to represent both earth and spirituality. In ‘The Wheel of Time’, magical patterns exhibit colors that symbolize their associated elements, and with each season, these color distinctions have become more noticeable. If the trailer is any clue, the patterns should look even more stunning this time.
Egwene’s Accepted trial
In the photo shown, you can observe additional patterns – these are not physical weaves but rather spiritual and water-like. This scene portrays three Aes Sedai performing a ritual that leads a Novice to become an Accepted in the White Tower. The Aes Sedai at the forefront is Siuan Sanche (Amyrlin Seat), followed by Leane Sharif, and a third unrecognized woman, possibly a new Aes Sedai we haven’t been introduced to yet. On the left side of the image, Egwene al’Vere can be seen, and it appears this image is illustrating Egwene undergoing her Accepted trial.
This stands out as significant because, although the majority of season 3 will be based on “The Shadow Rising”, it is also set to incorporate crucial scenes from the preceding book, “The Dragon Reborn”. Among these will be Egwene’s Accepted trial. Fingers crossed that Egwene’s trial fares better than Nynaeve’s last season.
Afterward, Moiraine finds herself lying on the ground, remarking “I have glimpsed countless possibilities of the future.” The landscape appears to be either the Aiel Waste or Tel’aran’rhiod. She is dressed in the same attire as depicted in the previous shot with the white orb, implying that this sequence might be a single scene or vision.
This scene is mysterious! Whose eye could it be? Your interpretation is as valid as mine. The shot in question, from the trailer, offers scant clues, making it one of the more challenging scenes to decipher throughout the entire preview. Initially, I considered Egwene or Moiraine, two characters who will likely experience some significant eye-opening moments this season. Moirane is known for her visions, while Egwene delves into Dreamwalking with the Aiel in “The Shadow Rising”. However, these are merely conjectures and I wouldn’t stake a heron mark blade on them or anything of the sort.
Returning to Moiraine, now on her feet amidst the arid landscape. This likely continues from the previous scene, where she awoke with the mysterious, white orbs in sight.
The glass columns of Rhuidean
These are the feet or Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn. We know this for two reasons: there’s a shot later in the trailer where we see Rand’s face with this same sort of lighting, and these feet are walking by glass columns. The glass column ter’angreal are mystical artifacts Rand encounters in Rhuidean, which push him through his vision quest. The Aiel use these to test prospective chiefs and Wise Ones, and indeed, Rand will be tested in the extreme.
Looking at those glass pillars in the distance really pumps me up! It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that we’ll be seeing Rhuidean on television this season.
In the trailer, we see one of the rare appearances of Nynaeve. She is dressed in her white Accepted attire, suggesting she has returned to the White Tower of Tar Valon. I anticipate this scene will occur early in the season, prior to Nynaeve’s journey to Tanchico alongside Elayne as they pursue the Black Ajah.
Hard times for Rand and Egwene
In the progression of “The Shadow Rising”, one significant interpersonal shift is evident between Rand and his childhood sweetheart Egwene, as their relationship evolves from a romantic dynamic towards a stronger sibling-like bond. The series has amplified their romantic connection even further, but it’s clear that they won’t remain romantically involved because each character has significant, pivotal romantic arcs to explore later in the storyline.
In other words, it seems like we’ll witness a separation between these characters in season 3. This particular scene, where they appear to be relaxing on a rug amidst the Aiel Waste, could potentially be associated with this narrative development. Maybe they attempt to deepen their relationship, but it fails? I’ll delve deeper into that aspect shortly.
In the following shot, Moiraine is seen flying upside-down, giving an illusion of trippiness. The lighting, her hair, and her facial expression suggest this could be the continuation of the scene where she’s submerged in water that started the trailer. The lighting seems to hint at it being connected to her Rhuidean storyline, where she experiences visionary episodes, as prominently shown in the trailer. Additionally, she is wearing a shirt that will reappear later when she and Rand stand before the Wise Ones.
Rand and Lan will train together at last!
In the upcoming scene, you’ll find yourself cheering just like me: Rand and Lan will be seen training side by side in a battle stance. The books delightfully depict Lan teaching martial skills to Rand, which starts in “The Great Hunt.” However, due to character splits in season 2, the show couldn’t explore this storyline. Now that Rand and Lan are reunited, we’ll get to witness Lan molding Rand into a formidable swordsman necessary for his survival of the trials to come!
In the following scene, Rand and a figure cloaked in robes are making their way across the desert, approaching a large group of Aiel. The second figure is somewhat unclear, but I can discern they have brown hair. Given that the next scene shows them standing before the Aiel, it’s plausible that the other figure is Moiraine.
Absolutely, here we see Rand and Moiraine standing before the Aiel’s Wise Ones! The Wise Ones are similar to the Aes Sedai among the Aiel. They provide wisdom and aid in guiding their chieftains, and some of them possess the ability to tap into the One Power, though not all do. They are the ones who must grant approval for Rand and Moiraine’s journey to Rhuidean, which is a crucial first step for Rand in his role as the car’a’carn.
Moiraine’s narration returns here, saying “In every future where I lived…”
Avendesora
We return once more to Rhuidean, where an awe-inspiring scene awaits: that tree is none other than the Tree of Life, Avendesora. In the story, Rand and Mat come across it during their trek into Rhuidean. Rest assured, the show will feature it as well, maintaining its captivating allure!
A new scene featuring Rand strolling between the glass pillars at Rhuidean. This scene strongly implies that the remarkable boots spotted previously belong to him.
Moiraine concludes her story: “…Rand meets his end.” Suddenly, we witness him perish, with Moiraine holding him, in this instant. This shot seems to be flipped – it appears as if it’s set in Tel’aran’rhiod, a realm of dreams, and the trailer frequently employs wide, reversed camera movements on scenes occurring within this dreamlike world.
Here are some intriguing aspects: Moiraine is adorned in royal attire and a coronet. Could it be that in this world, she’s envisioning her reign over Cairhien? It’s worth noting that Moiraine hails from an esteemed and ancient lineage. Rand’s sword appears stained, suggesting he might have been wounded again, mirroring his persistent wound inflicted during the fight against Ishamael.
Moving from Rand’s deceased form, we ascend to a ridge offering a panoramic view of the expansive Aiel Waste desert. I suspect that the Spear Maiden is probably Aviendha, whom we encountered in season 2. She holds significant importance and we can expect her presence to be quite frequent this season.
That’s not Lanfear…
Moiraine’s narration resumes with the phrase: “It seems like he’s the only one still alive…” The scene reveals Lanfear, a Forsaken, appearing to kiss Rand’s neck. But is it truly her? The camera switches angle to offer a fresh perspective, focusing on Rand’s face instead.
In the scene where someone is kissing Rand, it appears they have dark, curly hair. However, Lanfear’s hair was straight in the previous shot. Interestingly, another character with hair resembling this is shown later in the trailer: Egwene.
In this particular scene, I think it’s clear that Rand is attempting to enjoy some private moments with Egwene, but he can’t shake off memories of Lanfear, causing him to momentarily recall their past together. This brief memory-flash will play a part in the growing distance between Rand and Egwene throughout this upcoming season.
As a movie buff, I can’t help but notice the appearance of Lanfear once more. Seems like she’s traversing Tel’aran’rhiod this time, casting a smirk over her shoulder as she disappears, leaving one to presume that Moiraine might be her conversation partner, given the hazy figure in the foreground resembles Moiraine’s long brown tresses. It’s not hard to guess that Moiraine will have plenty of Lanfear in her visions, judging by the abundance we see in the trailer previews.
In this scene, Moiraine finds herself ensnared in Lanfear’s seductive embrace on a bed, only to be interrupted abruptly when a Forsaken sneakily approaches and begins to choke her.
Here, Lanfear is found once more, choking Moiraine yet again. This time, the setting is a barren desert, which seems to hint at another instance within the world of dreams known as Tel’aran’rhiod.
An alternate scene depicts Moiraine being fatally wounded, seemingly by Lanfear, in the bustling streets of Tar Valon. The ornamentation on a nearby column resembles those seen during Alanna’s battle against Liandrin later in the trailer.
Moiraine concludes her tale, implying that she will disclose to Lan about her Rhuidean revelations in this particular scene set around a campfire. In contrast to the books, where it’s left ambiguous, the show provides a clearer picture of what exactly Moiraine witnessed in Rhuidean, offering only subtle hints otherwise.
The notion that Rand’s life depends on Moiraine’s death casts a dark shadow. We’ll try to avoid delving too deeply because we aim to avoid book spoilers, but it’s making me ponder if the fateful scene involving a red stone doorway might unfold in this season. It appears to be growing increasingly probable.
Battle in the streets of Tar Valon
Next, we’ll delve into another significant scene absent from the books: a gruesome brawl in Tar Valon’s streets. We’ll explore more details about this encounter soon, which reveal that Alanna is battling Liandrin here. In this instance, a member of the Green Ajah, an Aes Seda sister named Liandrin, confronts her two warders, Ihvon and Maksim. She then releases a powerful burst of magic, leaving a destructive trail in its wake. This season, Ihvon has been re-cast in his role.
The weaves Alanna uses here are a mix of earth and fire, and the result is explosive:
In this particular scene, label the column on the left as it shares designs similar to Moiraine’s vision. Here, Alanna and her Warders stand guard before a gate, leading me to speculate that they might serve as the final defense against Liandrin’s potential escape from Tar Valon in the early part of season 3.
Assassination attempt on Rand
In my perspective, the subsequent sequences in “The Shadow Rising” movie are undeniably intriguing. Early on, we witness Rand, our protagonist, undergoing an unsettling ordeal within a castle prior to his journey into the Aiel Waste. This peculiar incident is triggered by the emergence of a “bubble of evil,” which seems to be distorting reality as we know it.
Indeed, it seems this incident could very well be an attempt on Rand’s life. What intrigues me most about it is the setting. In the novels, this unfolds within the Stone of Tear, a formidable stronghold that Rand and his companions capture with the Aiel’s aid at the end of “The Dragon Reborn”. The Stone of Tear hasn’t been introduced in the series yet, and I suspect it won’t until further into the storyline, when the legendary sword housed there becomes more crucial.
Instead, I believe this scene might be shifting to Caemlyn or Tar Valon. The hint for me is the windows; they resemble those seen in the background of Elayne’s shot at the start of the trailer where she’s donning a crown. Although not an exact match, they share enough similarities that they could potentially belong to the same castle. It’s worth noting that Tar Valon is known for its intricate window designs too.
It’s likely that we’ll find Rand in one of those places during the early stages of the season, as he is summoned to meet the influential figures as the Dragon Reborn. If it’s Caemlyn, this setting could spark his feelings for Elayne, a development depicted in the novels at this point. It also sets up an encounter with Elaida, a new Aes Sedai antagonist who plays a significant role in the series.
It would be more challenging to set the scene in Tar Valon because Robert Jordan deliberately never had Rand enter the White Tower until a crucial moment late in the series. However, we can discuss this when season 3 arrives. Regardless of where the scene is located, it’s likely to be one of the reasons that prompt Rand to depart from that place and begin his journey towards the Aiel Waste.
Rand vs Couladin
In this scene, it appears we’re witnessing a significant confrontation. In the novel “The Shadow Rising”, the protagonist Rand encounters an Aiel warrior named Couladin. Couladin harbors resentment towards Rand, as he believes a non-Aiel (a wetlander) is unfit to be the leader they call the car’a’carn. This novel reaches its peak with a standoff between Rand and Couladin, taking place before a gathering of Aiel chiefs and their warriors. It seems this could be the event we’re observing now.
The clue that the man in black armor standing beside Rand is Couladin is the dragon tattoos visible on his forearms. According to prophecies, these tattoos are acquired by the Dragon when passing through Rhuidean. If you look closely at the poster for The Wheel of Time season 3, you’ll notice that Rand indeed has these distinctive tattoos on his right forearm. However, it remains uncertain during this encounter whether Couladin truly got his tattoos in Rhuidean as he claims or through some other means.
Expect this to be a standout scene somewhere in the back half of season 3.
In this passage, you can see Lanfear strolling through intense sunlight. Her attire matches what she wore during the scene where she strangled Moiraine in the World of Dreams (Tel’aran’rhiod), suggesting that these events are happening sequentially within the same sequence or scene.
In our scene, Rand and Couladin are facing trial by the Aiel. An intriguing aspect of this framing includes eight seats on the hilltop overlooking them, possibly representing the leaders from eight Aiel clans. It’s worth noting that there are twelve Aiel clans in total within the books. Given the series’ tendency to streamline certain elements, it wouldn’t be unexpected if some less prominent clans were omitted, mirroring how the Forsaken and their roles have been reduced.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but notice an intriguing detail in this scene: the character on the left, identified as Rand, is removing his jacket. This gesture might be symbolic, perhaps to underscore his shared dragon tattoos with Couladin, which he earned during his stay at Rhuidean, among the Aiel chiefs.
Meet Galad Damodred
We’re not done with the exciting stuff yet, not even close! The next shot in the trailer shows none other than Galad Damodred, an important Wheel of Time character who is finally appearing in season 3. Galad is Elayne’s half-brother, through their father Taringail Damodred.
A trustworthy news source, WoTseries, recently found that actor Callum Kerr apparently added his role as Galad in The Wheel of Time season 3 to his resume last year. It seems quite plausible to me. Here he is, presumably training, in what appears to be the courtyard of Caemlyn castle. Observe the emblem of Andor, a rampant lion, adorned on the guard’s red uniform in the background.
Elayne and Galad’s other sibling, Gawyn, hasn’t made an appearance as of now in this season. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and see if he decides to join us later on.
Here’s another swift round of Lan’s practice. Given that he’s spinning his blade without an adversary present, I’m guessing this is a training session. It seems as if we are once again in the desolate Aiel Wasteland.
Next, we catch a brief glimpse of a blacksmith vigorously hammering on a metal object. It’s highly likely that this is Perrin Aybara, as he’s set to reappear in the Two Rivers and engage in a significant conflict there during this season. In an upcoming scene, he can be seen wearing armor, which leads me to speculate that he will reconcile his warrior self with his blacksmith self while at home, potentially crafting the armor we see here.
Our next shot is the sole appearance of Min Farshaw in the trailer, and she’s in a very interesting place, surrounded by taxidermied animals and artifacts. My gut impression is that she’s in the museum of the Panarch’s Palace in Tanchico, a setting which features in some key scenes near the end of The Shadow Rising.
Discussing characters who haven’t made many appearances yet, let me introduce Mat Cauthon for the first time. Unfortunately, this brief introduction doesn’t provide much fodder for speculation. Mat is seen in relaxed attire that seems suitable for sleeping, he bears some bloodstains on his neck, and his gaze suggests he’s lost in thought or disoriented, perhaps resembling a trance-like state known as a “dze.” I can’t help but ponder if the mysterious wounds and strange behavior might be linked to the cursed dagger he retrieved at the end of season 2?
Moghedien and Liandrin
Intriguingly, I find myself drawn to a fresh figure yet unknown to me: Moghedien, a newly introduced Forsaken at the twilight of season 2. Here, we witness an encounter between her and Liandrin, which I surmise is set in Tanchico, as both these characters play pivotal roles in this very arc within the books.
Moving forward, I found myself privy to a fleeting moment between Moiraine and Siuan, in the latter’s fishing shack. Previously, their last encounter was marked by acrimony as Siuan attempted to manipulate Moiraine using an oath sworn, only to find herself immobilized by Lanfear at Moiraine’s hands. This act would undoubtedly have stirred discontent among the other Aes Sedai, as the Amyrlin had allowed the Dragon Reborn to evade capture in Cairhien and slip through her grasp.
It appears that the cast will reunite in season 3, and we can expect Moiraine to visit Tar Valon earlier in the next season since that’s where the portals to the fishing shack are found. The scene where Moiraine initiates a kiss is particularly noteworthy, considering Siuan took away Moiraine’s independence in a disturbing manner at the end of season 2. This scene, however, shows Moiraine taking the lead and choosing forgiveness, which adds an intentional depth to its staging.
Perrin and Faile
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my excitement about an upcoming development: it’s Perrin…and his beloved Faile! Yes, we’ll be meeting Faile next year in the series, a character from the books who’s long been awaited. I appreciate the attention to detail here – just like in the novels, where Perrin often describes Faile as petite compared to his towering blacksmith physique, they’ve subtly conveyed this in the scene by having her wear sleeveless outfits that emphasize their size difference. I’m thrilled to see how the show will bring Faile’s vibrant character to life!
Elayne in disguise!
The image displayed up top features Elayne Trakand, the heir of Andor who secretly dons a disguise to track down the Black Ajah within Tanchico. This disguise has sparked quite the controversy in the Wheel of Time community lately, as many fans were unsure if it was really her. However, costume designer Sharon Gilham seems to have settled the matter by confirming that it is indeed Elayne, providing us with our first sneak peek at her undercover!
Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod
As Elayne and Nynaeve venture out to track down the Black Ajah, Egwene will delve into mastering the art of Dreamwalking in the realm of Tel’aran’rhiod under the tutelage of the Aiel Wise Ones. This significant phase marks a crucial development for Egwene, hinting at her exploration within the dreamscape. At the close of this scene, a subtle smile graces her lips, and the harsh sunlight and slightly blurred setting suggest the ethereal quality of the dream realm.
By the way, do you recall my mention of Egwene having short, wavy hair in an earlier scene where a woman was seen kissing Rand? Well, here’s a closer look at her fresh haircut for season 3.
It’s clear that this scene depicts Rand undergoing distress; his anguished cries echo those seen previously in the trailer during Rhuidean scenes. Given the continuity, it appears to be a part of the same visionary journey. It’s safe to say that it’s unlikely to be a joyful encounter.
Here’s another thrilling glimpse ahead: Season 3 will offer a revisit of Rand’s birth through a flashback. The character depicted here is the Aiel warrior Tigraine Mantear, last seen in Episode 107’s cold opening, engaged in combat with a group of soldiers on the slopes of Dragonmount while giving birth. We left off without knowing what happened next, but in this scene, Tigraine tragically loses her life, while Tam al’Thor takes the newborn baby back to the Two Rivers to raise as his own.
In this scene, we find Tigraine’s lifeless body, with blood seeping onto a piece of cloth beneath her. It’s clear she has recently given birth. The identity of the man holding her body and crying out remains unclear – could it be another Aiel, or perhaps Rand’s father, whose name is too revealing to mention due to spoilers? We’ll discover the answer soon.
Following this, Lanfear engages in a fierce skirmish with Alanna within Tar Valon’s bustling streets, suggesting that it was indeed Alanna who was involved in the previous encounter marked by a surge of magic. As for Liandrin, she appears menacing, her visage and hands stained with blood, indicating her ruthless escape from Tar Valon. Meanwhile, Alanna has shaped the One Power into a formidable blade – an impressive display given that the Greens are the Battle Ajah, making them potentially capable of confronting someone as powerful as Liandrin.
This individual, drenched in blood, goes by the name of Perrin. In this scene, he’s clad in his armor, brandishing a colossal battle axe with a war cry echoing amidst blazing structures and frenzied combatants. The Battle of the Two Rivers, a significant event slated for season 3, seems to be what we’re witnessing here, and it appears that Perrin will play a crucial role in it.
Dark days for Alanna Sedai
As I revisit Alanna, she’s in a state of distress over a lifeless body on the bustling streets of Tar Valon. The attire she wears mirrors her previous encounter with Liandrin, suggesting this is an extension of that same sequence. It appears one of Alanna’s protectors might be meeting their end here, or perhaps someone else dear to her.
Let me also mention this: If indeed one of Alanna’s guards lies slain on the ground, it would provide an ideal opportunity for Liandrin to flee. After all, Liandrin belongs to the Red Ajah, who have contempt for men and refuse to take warders, considering their dependence as a sign of weakness. So, wouldn’t it be ironic if Alanna and Liandrin engaged in an even match, only for Liandrin to then exploit this “weakness” by taking advantage of the tragedy to distract Alanna, allowing her enough time to escape the city?
At long last, we reach the climactic scene of the trailer, and it’s quite a spectacle. This time, Moiraine lies on the ground, her throat appearing to have been slashed. But here’s the chilling twist: she’s in the Ways, struggling to move away from a band of figures dressed in black. Among all Moiraine’s visions, this is the most terrifying: it hints that our story’s heroes are turning to darkness, becoming new Forsaken. From left to right, we see Rand, Egwene, Nynaeve, Lanfear, Mat, Elayne, Moghedien, and Perrin. To make matters worse, Lanfear reappears in her dominatrix attire from season 2, and everyone else seems to have adopted the same style. Poor Moiraine seems to be facing an insurmountable fate.
Mark your calendars for March 13, 2025! That’s when season 3 of “The Wheel of Time” will premiere on Amazon Prime Video. Keep a close eye on our site, Winter Is Coming, for all the latest updates and discussions as you follow along with the show!
