Skeleton Crew: Breaking down the Crimson Jack Easter egg

Skeleton Crew: Breaking down the Crimson Jack Easter egg

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who grew up reading Marvel comics and devouring every new piece of Star Wars lore, I was absolutely thrilled to see the Easter egg of “Crimson Jack” in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew! The name sent chills down my spine, transporting me back to the nostalgic days of my youth when I first read about this infamous pirate in the pages of Star Wars comics.

This week’s installment of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” added to the anticipation built since Wim and Neel pretended bravery in the initial episode of the series. Intriguingly, the enigmatic figure at the end of episode two, “Way, Way Out Past The Barrier,” known as Jod Na Nawood, shed some light on Port Borgo. A nickname given to him, reminiscent of Marvel’s “Star Wars” comics, stirred strong waves of nostalgia within me.

Let’s discuss the Easter egg of “Crimson Jack” in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Skeleton Crew: Breaking down the Crimson Jack Easter egg

In issue #7 of the Star Wars comic series, published after Marvel adapted Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, the tales post-Yavin (Battle of Yavin) began. It was in this issue, titled “Star Wars 7: New Planets, New Perils!”, where readers were first introduced to a pirate gang leader named Crimson Jack. The cover teased the adventure of “Han Solo and Chewbacca on a forgotten world by the law!” In the story, Han Solo finds himself swindled out of the reward he received for rescuing Princess Leia.

The article on Crimson Jack from Star Wars Legends in Wookieepedia is an excellent guide for understanding the entire tale of “Redbeard,” as Han nicknames him. Four comic issues later, during their mission to find Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa encountered Jack and his crew once more. According to Wookieepedia, these characters managed to trick Jack by leading him to believe there was a Rebel treasure in the Drexel system.

In the current storyline, we’ve seen the return of the infamous character, Crimson Jack. In the mini-series titled “Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy” by Ethan Sacks, this old acquaintance was depicted as a bounty hunter. The situation unfolded when someone aboard a starcruiser was found to have connections with the Resistance, making them an attractive target for Jack to capture and hand over to the First Order for a substantial reward.

What does the name “Crimson Jack” mean for Jod Na Nawood?

It appears that the character known as Jod Na Nawood, who was unmasked as “Crimson Jack” by Kh’ymm, goes by different identities depending on his audience. Interestingly, Jod is also Captain Silvo from the first episode, “This Could Be A Real Adventure.” Despite being a pirate, he’s been experiencing some bad luck lately. Benjar Pranic recalls him as someone with a burning passion and a cunning plan in mind. Jod hints to his old crew member about a significant opportunity or major win that he used to discuss.

In the show, Jod constantly wears multiple masks, making it challenging to discern his true intentions. It’d be intriguing if there was a reference back to Crimson Jack, who unwittingly aided his captives due to rumors of a hidden Rebel wealth. After all, he tends to withhold the truth more than outright lie.

Currently, we eagerly anticipate discovering if he has more depth beyond wealth. The episodes of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ are being released weekly on Tuesdays, and there’s still a long journey ahead before we reach the conclusion for all those traveling to At Attin.
