Bungie pledge to improve Destiny 2 Tonic system after community uproar

As a seasoned Destiny 2 gamer with countless hours logged into this captivating universe, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the ongoing saga of the Tonic system. It feels like a rollercoaster ride, full of anticipation and frustration in equal measure.

Destiny 2’s Tonic system has been widely panned, but improvements are coming.

Next week, an update will be made to the Tonics system in Destiny 2, and Bungie has confirmed that the Episode: Revenant system, which hasn’t been popular, will receive an enhancement.

The developers are anticipating that the update will resolve issues related to the tonic system, as many players have been vocal about their dislike for this mechanism because it’s perceived as overly demanding and not providing sufficient rewards.

Destiny 2 Tonics duration, proper weapon focusing on the cards

Yesterday, Bungie announced via their Destiny 2 Team X/Twitter account that they will be updating Tonics on December 17th. In a nutshell, their primary objective is to offer more chances for players to secure the weapons they desire with the help of Tonics.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the playtime for each Tonic’s base duration is getting a significant boost! Across all rarities, you’ll now find yourself enjoying these Tonics for an extra 20 minutes. So, Legendary Tonics will extend to a whopping 80 minutes – perfect for tackling multiple activities or even a full dungeon run! Plus, extending your fun doesn’t stop there; lab equipment unlocks offer additional duration boosts, and Act 3 brings yet another increase. It’s all about maximizing the fun!

With the latest update, weapon-focused potions will now concentrate more on the specific weapon the player is pursuing. Earlier, consuming a weapon-specific potion would merely slightly enhance the probability of that weapon being dropped. However, players often found themselves disappointed after drinking a potion and receiving a variety of weapons from the same set instead of the desired loot they were aiming for.

In simpler terms, “Legendary Tonics ensure that the specified weapon appears directly in your loot upon activation, rather than being distributed among various episodes for Revenant weapon drops,” Bungie explained. Moreover, these activity-specific tonics will boost the likelihood of receiving weapons when participating in the corresponding activity.

A step in the right direction, but still a “clunky” system to navigate

Many Destiny 2 gamers have voiced their disapproval towards the Tonic system since it debuted with Episode: Revenant in October. Originally intended to replace the old crafting and attuning system used in earlier seasons, the Tonic system is still undergoing enhancements as players grapple with its intricacies two months later.

One player expressed their frustration on Reddit, stating, “All this effort put into creating a system that seems more intricate than simply having seasonal weapons crafted directly, if you ask me.” Indeed, the process of gathering tonic ingredients and repeatedly opening menus when a tonic expires has left players feeling overwhelmed. This complex system, often referred to as “clunky,” appears to be causing difficulties for many users.

The other player expressed their disappointment, saying it feels like merely adding makeup to an already flawed system. They find the idea of earning Tonic rewards for seasons to be inherently demotivating due to the excessive number of tasks involved before receiving the desired drops.

Bungie continues working diligently on enhancing the current system, ensuring it stays active until Episode: Revenant Act 3 concludes in February next year.
