Shrinking season 2 episode 10 portrays difficult change in a realistic way (Review)

As a long-time fan of heartfelt and humorous TV shows, I must say that “Shrinking” season 2 is truly hitting it out of the park! This week’s episode, “Changing Patterns,” was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and character development that had me hooked from start to finish.

Incredibly, it’s hard to believe that just two episodes remain of the second season of Shrinking! Despite this season being extended with an extra pair of episodes, time seems to have flown by. This week, we delve into episode 10, titled “Changing Patterns.” Rest assured, there are indeed alterations afoot, and more changes yet to come. Here’s our review of the episode on Apple TV+. SPOILERS AHEAD.

On Alice’s eighteenth birthday, everyone is eager to make it a memorable occasion, with Jimmy being particularly enthusiastic. Not only is this a significant milestone, but it also serves as an opportunity to compensate for the difficult celebration from last year after the loss of her mother. As she approaches this milestone, changes are looming for Alice, and she feels ready to move on from therapy. This progress since we first encountered Alice in season 1 is a testament to how far she’s come.

I thought it was also a sweet touch of Paul giving her his hat. Then there’s Paul and Julie, whose husband died. Selling the house they shared, the plan was for her to “crash for a few days” at Paul’s home. Even after everything, he’s not quite ready to commit. At least at the start of the episode. But during the Paul vs Gaby showdown, she knocks some sense into him. Side note – as much as Paul pretends like he doesn’t care about his friends, he definitely does. It was sweet of him to ask Derek2 about his intentions towards Gaby.

Regarding Paul and Julie, the decision for her to live with him marks a significant shift for Paul, one he welcomes and initiates. However, things don’t go as smoothly as planned when Gaby follows Paul’s advice, an action she secretly acknowledges is correct. Unfortunately, Gaby’s mother doesn’t respond as hoped. In the end, Gaby musters the strength to tell her mom that moving in isn’t a good idea, but her mother doesn’t handle it gracefully. As for Liz and Mac, ever since Liz kissed him, she’s been trapped in a cycle of shame. Yet, by the end of the episode, Derek manages to win back his wife, Liz.

Alright, those are all the big changes featured in the episode. But there’s also one more Shrinking season 2 episode 10 seems to be hinting at. Jimmy wants to buy Alice a yellow Cooper just like the one her mother had as a present for her 18th birthday. The seller is Sophie, a nice single mom that Jimmy clicks with. What’s fun is that the character is played by How I Met Your Mother actress Cobie Smulders, which Jason Segel was also on. It was an onscreen reunion for the former co-stars!

There’s a connection between the two, but Jimmy’s hesitant to act. What draws me is Derek’s knack for ethical negotiations, can’t help but chuckle! Yet, it doesn’t rule out Sophie completely. Her inquiry about Alice’s opinion on the car suggests that maybe Jimmy could be considering a change. This stirs up a whirlwind of emotions. Moving on to the specifics of Alice’s birthday now…

Everything starts off well. The encounter between Liz and Gaby against Alice was a riot, and she adores the present her father gave her. However, Louis attempts to keep his distance, but Alice persists in visiting him to find out why he’s been avoiding her. Frankly, I didn’t understand why Alice wanted such a close friendship with Louis when she initially forgave him. But it turns out he’s assisting her in healing and coping with her grief. When she discovers Jimmy asked him to keep away, she’s furious. To add insult to injury, she even says, “you really know how to ruin another birthday.” That hurts.

In a more natural and easier-to-understand manner,
