Emma D’Arcy has a “powerful desire” to make House of the Dragon season 3
As a seasoned movie reviewer who has witnessed the rise and fall of many a dragon (or at least, their on-screen counterparts), I must say that the second season of HBO’s House of the Dragon has left me both intrigued and slightly perplexed. The ending, while not quite the climactic bang I was hoping for, has certainly whetted my appetite for what’s to come in season three.
In simpler terms, the second installment of HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” the prequel to “Game of Thrones,” concluded earlier this year. Emma D’Arcy portrayed Rhaenyra Targaryen who aimed to seize the Iron Throne in King’s Landing, which was then controlled by her younger half-brother Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). The season finale felt a bit unusual; it lacked a definitive climax but offered tantalizing hints of significant upcoming events. Here’s hoping that the third season, whenever it premieres, starts with an exciting beginning.
D’Arcy expresses their eagerness to return to work, saying, “Well, it’s inevitable, isn’t it?” They shared with Variety. “Once we move into the new year, I can feel myself edging towards pre-production and we’ll be on our way. I must admit, I’m quite thrilled about everything. frankly, I’m just at a point where I have this strong urge to return. I miss everyone. The show is created by such exceptional people who infuse the production with love over a considerable timeframe. The dedication is truly outstanding and it’s always an honor for me to spend significant chunks of my life working alongside them.
And in terms of Rhaenyra, I’m waiting with bated breath to read exactly what she’s going to be doing. It’s exciting leaving the second season in such a moment of change, both sort of personal and political change. Rhaenyra is a character who’s finally coming into her power. I think it’s taken two seasons for her to sort of come into herself. And so I think it’ll be quite a different challenge to start to wear that confidence.
It’s a bit surprising that D’Arcy is discussing Rhaenyra gaining power now, as she has been a queen all along, even if absent. However, the second season of the show was criticized for being somewhat slow-paced, and the writers altered events from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood to introduce challenges for Rhaenyra, such as her prolonged conflict with her husband Daemon (played by Matt Smith).
Beware SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 3 below
Fans of “Fire & Blood” anticipate two major events approaching in the series “House of the Dragon”: the Battle of the Gullet and Rhaenyra’s capture of King’s Landing, hinted at in the season 2 finale. It appears that a behind-the-scenes book reveals that the Battle of the Gullet was initially planned for the end of season 2 but has been postponed, which might imply it will kick off season 3. If this is the case, it promises an exciting start to the new season.
Despite anticipation, filming for House of the Dragon season 3 won’t commence until March 2025; consequently, episodes will likely premiere on HBO and Max in 2026. In the interim, D’Arcy has been relishing fan reactions to season 2, primarily through face-to-face interactions, as they’ve opted to keep their online presence minimal.
D’Arcy expressed, “I truly enjoy meeting people, and I take great pride in this season. It holds a special significance for me. And my intuition tells me that it resonated strongly with others. One of the wonderful aspects of a series that returns is that the viewers essentially grow up with the characters. This intimacy makes the presentation feel less formal. As the audience becomes more familiar with these characters, so does the actor. In turn, this alteration in our relationship creates an environment where television becomes an exciting medium because it offers the opportunity for extended relationships, which can only be explored through the long format.
The series “House of the Dragon” is slated for two additional seasons. Regardless of how it unfolds, I believe D’Arcy is an exceptional discovery. They’re incredibly talented, articulate, and seem thoughtful beyond measure. I’ll definitely be tracking their career progress after “House of the Dragon”. Of course, my warmest congratulations go out to D’Arcy for their Golden Globe nomination!
