Skeleton Crew episode 3 recap: The Owl Lady but not the one from the other Disney Show

As a seasoned space adventurer, I must say that this episode of Skeleton Crew took me on quite the rollercoaster ride! The characters’ desperate search for their lost home planet and the mysterious owl woman Kh’ymm added layers of intrigue that kept me hooked till the end.

In Week One of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” the debut episode, titled “This Could Be A Real Adventure,” introduced our young heroes and transported us to the enigmatic planet of At Attin. The second episode, “Way, Way Out Past the Barrier,” propelled them through the cosmos to the pirate-infested Port Borgo, where they were imprisoned. In the brig, they encountered a mysterious Force user who offered assistance in their quest for home (following tales of At Attin as a possible legendary treasure world).

Let’s recap everything you missed in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 3, “Very Interesting, As An Astrogration Problem.”

We open back on At Attin in the home of Undersecretary Fara. All of the missing children’s parents are there, including KB’s moms, Neel’s parents, and Wendle, Wim’s father, who saw the kids take off in the starship.

An enigmatic robot sent by the Supervisor shows up. Since the children ventured beyond the Boundary, the Supervisor has chosen not to interact with the Federation. Unsurprisingly, the parents stirred quite a commotion, insisting on meeting the Supervisor.

In the town of Port Borgo, Jod Na Nawood manages to free the children, Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB, from their confined cell. Despite Wim’s enthusiasm about meeting a true “Jedi”, Fern remains cautious towards Jod. Jod points out that his release from jail would have been pointless without a spaceship, since he couldn’t leave the port without one. Wim is thrilled by this newfound friend, and Jod continues to embody the ideal Force user they need.

When Jod is absent, the children debate among themselves if they should trust this individual. Upon his return, having subdued someone for their blaster, the group slips away into the throng, finding it simpler to conceal themselves.

As I navigate my way and board a ferry towards my vessel, the Onyx Cinder, doubts creep in about the seemingly effortless journey ahead of me. Once we’re back on the ship, Jod suggests we pay a visit to a star map expert to help our young crewmates locate their home.

Despite their strong reluctance, the children refuse to abandon their droid, SM-33. He arrived with the vessel and is more familiar with it than anyone else present. Fern questions Jod, stating, “I believed Jedi never abandon a comrade,” pushing Jod into a corner. Wim shows unwavering faith that Jod can perform miracles using the Force! Eventually, Jod concedes, instructing the children to remain in a secure location on the ship.

As Jod navigates through the throng of people, word spreads that Captain Silvo, who was seen in the very first episode, has managed to break free from his cell. This tidbit serves as a reminder that Jod was indeed the captain in the series premiere. He eventually arrives at a hub for droids and discovers SM-33 and the rodent residing within his peephole.

While attempting to liberate the droid, Jod encounters an old acquaintance called Benjar Pranic. It seems Benjar is unaware of the manhunt for “Silvo” and invites him for tea. However, Jod tries to escape when Benjar suggests reporting the Force user to Brutus, the new captain. Caught off guard, Jod feels compelled to eliminate Benjar.

While the children are still arguing whether Jod possesses Force abilities, Fern reminds them of the possibility that he might be manipulating magnets, recalling Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Haja Estree who feigned being a Jedi by using magnets. All of a sudden, gunfire erupts outside! Jod is swiftly returning in a speedboat, dodging left and right as he eludes pursuit from other speedboats filled with pirates in space suits!

He dumps SM-33 onto their ship, jumps into the pilot chair, and punches the Onyx Cinder into flight! Oh no! They’re trapped on a fuel line. Jod starts spinning the ship to snap the line as Brutus realizes he’s escaping in the ship. Brutus calls for the canons to fire upon the vessel! Jod hits the hyperdrive, snapping the line! The massive wire flings back, crashing into Port Borgo.

In the secure confines of hyperspace, I, with KB by my side, rejuvenate the SM-33 starship. Jod prepares meals and treats the SM-33 as a subordinate. While Jod rummages through the captain’s quarters for fresh attire, weapons, and any valuable finds, the SM-33 confronts me, asserting it won’t follow my commands.

As they dine, the children ponder if there truly exists treasure on their native planet. Neel suggests it might be connected to the ongoing Great Project their world is constantly striving towards. Their parents, primarily analysts, are known to study the origin of their wealth. A gentle reminder from episode 2: Their planet employs Republic credits, a currency no longer in circulation. The pirates in that episode recognized Wim’s lunch money from his father as an enormous fortune across the galaxy.

Wim conceals his accomplishments as Job arrives, while all the children retire for the night, except for KB who doubts he is truly a Jedi. She’s made calculations about it. He informs her that not everything can be predicted by numbers, and she needs to learn not to solely rely on her data goggles.

She has to learn to trust her gut.

After a few hours, they emerge from hyperspace onto a moon. Stepping out into the wilderness, the children question why they didn’t touch down nearer. Fern recognizes that he’s concealing their vessel. He confesses that this acquaintance could betray them.

Within the enclosed area, Kh’ymm, a woman there, notices Jod coming with the kids. She summons a guard for Jod’s apprehension via a call for backup. As long as she can, Kh’ymm delays the group. She addresses him as “Crimson Jack” and extends a welcoming gesture to let them enter.

Kh’ymm, who resembles an owl lady, descends gracefully to greet the children. Upon hearing they hail from At Attin, she takes flight to retrieve a scroll. She then discloses that their home has been skillfully concealed from the wider galaxy for its safety. In ancient times, there were several planets collectively known as the Jewels of the Old Republic, which were hidden for protection. However, all but one – At Attin – were ultimately destroyed.

Jod and Kh’ymm understand that the children serve as guides, mapping out their own world. Kh’ymm’s settlement functions as an observatory, leading her to inquire about their surroundings from them. The children have unknowingly skipped significant events in history, such as the Galactic Civil War and Alderaan’s destruction (from “A New Hope”). Later, Kh’ymm removes a metallic emblem from Fern’s bag, which could correspond to the Barrier encircling their planet, and she narrows down the potential matches to thousands of planets.

After a brief hesitation, Jod acknowledges that she has been delaying and recognizes incoming X-Wings. In response, Kh’ymm assaults Jod, urging the children to flee immediately. He forcefully knocks her aside, grabbing the data chip from her search. To prevent Jod from using the information, he destroys her computer instead.

Instead of all the children rushing outside to follow him, only KB stayed behind. She tended to Kh’ymm, who advised her not to rely on instincts, but to make decisions based on reason instead. Moreover, Kh’ymm informed KB that she could contact the owl woman whenever needed for support. With this assurance, KB quickly joined the others outside. Meanwhile, X-wings were constantly darting around the moon, scouring different craters in search of their spaceships.

In the episode we’re referring to, the children insist on questioning Jod, stubbornly refusing to board the ship and even summoning SM-33 as reinforcement (it’s worth noting that in episode 2, SM-33 acknowledges Fern as the captain). Eventually, Jod reveals his true feelings, confessing that he too feels as lost and isolated as the children. He also clarifies that he never declared himself a Jedi. Instead, he offers a bargain to help the kids return home and perhaps receive a reward in return. KB insists that Jod serves them first, which he accepts.

They depart, as the X-wings dive in and trail behind. Since SM-33 was repairing the hyperdrive, they had to delay for a while. In an unexpected move, he assigns Neel to pilot the vessel and maneuver it evasively to avoid detection. Meanwhile, Jod takes Wim and Fern along with him to assist SM-33. He heads towards the hyperdrive system. Simultaneously, KB slots in the data disk containing the coordinates into the computer. Fern and Wim are tasked with manning the gun stations to deter the X-wings from pursuing their escape. Wim is thrilled by this exhilarating phase of the journey. Once KB gives the signal that their ship is safe, they leap into hyperspace.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself expressing my concerns to you, Kh’ymm. I’m unwilling to jeopardize the precious young lives aboard this vessel. Furthermore, I must confess, I harbor doubts regarding your assertions about their final destination.

As a devoted viewer, I find myself at the conclusion of episode 3 of Skeleton Crew titled “An Engrossing Astrogration Dilemma.
