Paralympian Dylan Alcott reveals huge career move after retiring from professional tennis

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but admire Dylan Alcott’s courage and determination as he steps into a new chapter of his life. Having witnessed his exceptional talent and resilience on the tennis court for years, it’s inspiring to see him taking on acting, a field far removed from his sporting roots.

Dylan Alcott has revealed his next career move after retiring from professional wheelchair tennis.

The 34-year-old Australian Paralympic athlete, who retired from sports competition in 2021, now works as a commentator and made an appearance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

However, it’s been confirmed that Dylan is venturing into an unexpected direction, as he disclosed his intention to delve into acting, marking a significant departure from his athletic background.

Following his debut as an actor in Stan’s popular show “Bump”, Dylan expressed delight for each moment spent on a movie set and is eagerly seeking additional acting opportunities in the future.

Yet, he made it clear that unlike some famous personalities who rely merely on their fame, he aims not to be one of them. Instead, he emphasized the importance of dedicating countless hours to perfect his craft for his role in “Bump”.

He had previously worked on a movie set as an athlete, but never as an actor. However, he found that he genuinely enjoyed his experience there, expressing his enthusiasm quite passionately. This is what he shared with the Daily Mail.

Experiencing that test was beneficial for me to determine my affection for working on a film set daily, and indeed, I found it enjoyable. Here’s hoping I get more chances to do so in the near future!

In his own words, Dylan, known for portraying Marcus in Bump during its fourth and fifth seasons, shared that he sought guidance through acting lessons and even engaged a professional coach to ensure he met the required level of performance.

He shared that he didn’t desire to become the well-known individual who merely boasts about his acting skills. Instead, he has taken acting lessons, attended classes, and even hired a coaching mentor in the field of acting.

‘I tried to do the best that I can and everyone was really accommodating.’

In this rephrased version, here’s a possible way to put it: Among well-known Australian stars like Claudia Karvan and Angus Sampson, Dylan spoke with pride about holding his own on the set alongside them.

He shared that the most significant hurdle he encountered was that everyone was incredibly convincing actors, causing him to question his own actions upon arrival.

‘Then I realised that everyone was so accommodating but I could also hold my own.’

With great enthusiasm for his fresh endeavor, the athlete immersed himself deeply, occasionally lending a hand in the scriptwriting space by crafting a few jokes for his characters and urging fellow creators Claudia and Kelsey Munro to aim higher and surpass expectations.

Frequently, when a non-disabled writer creates a disabled character, they may feel uncertain about what to write. However, this individual asserted, “Let’s go for it anyway,” and it turned out fantastic, he shared.

‘I even do my own stunts in this season!’

Dylan expressed his satisfaction in portraying a positive representation of disability on screen, noting that he couldn’t find similar representations when he was growing up.

In his younger years, he noted that the sole form of disability representation he encountered was wheelchair users featured in drink-driving awareness advertisements. However, this portrayal had little connection to his personal experiences.

As a child, I’d always dreamt of taking up acting. However, my passion was often overshadowed by the lack of authentic representation for people like me in movies and TV shows. This is what I expressed during our conversation.

‘Whenever it was, it was always super negative and sad and not people being themselves. So that’s why I started doing acting and when Claudia and Kelsey [Munro] called me with a role, I couldn’t believe it!

As a child, the sole portrayal that resonated with me was a public service announcement about road safety. It depicted a person driving under the influence, resulting in an accident, followed by someone weeping.

“Initially, I thought ‘That’s not my reality!’ However, many people perceive it as their own. Yet, one unique aspect of Bump is that during our gathering, I encouraged everyone to ‘Step out of your comfort zone and embrace risks.’

During his interview about his debut acting gig on Bump, Dylan expressed both excitement and a tinge of sadness as he had to leave the show prematurely due to an earlier obligation – a job as a commentator for Channel Nine at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

As I was called upon to take charge of the Olympics broadcast on Channel Nine, I found myself unable to complete the entire season. Regrettably, my involvement came to an unexpected conclusion, yet in all honesty, if circumstances allowed, I would have loved to stay and contribute a bit more.

On Boxing Day, Dylan is set to reappear as Marcus in the fifth and concluding episode of the beloved Australian television series, Bump.

The comedy-drama show primarily revolves around the characters of Oly, played by Nathalie Morris, and her boyfriend Santi, portrayed by Carlos Sanson Jr. A baby was unexpectedly born to them during their time at school in the first season.

In the upcoming season, Angie (portrayed by Claudia Karvan), Oly’s mom, will persist in her fight against cancer. Meanwhile, Oly grapples with the reality of her second pregnancy.

On December 26th, the fresh season of the Stan-exclusive series “Bump” will make its debut, with all episodes released simultaneously. Catch up on every episode from Seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4, available to stream now, exclusively on Stan.
