Gavin And Stacey stars Mathew Horne and Joanna Page reveal where they were when they found out about the Christmas finale as they admit 'it came out of the blue!'

As someone who has spent countless hours binge-watching British sitcoms, I must admit that the upcoming Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special has me all aflutter like a schoolgirl with her first crush. The show’s return to our screens after an eleven-year hiatus is reminiscent of the anticipation I felt as a child waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, stars of Gavin and Stacey, shared where they were when they learned that the eagerly awaited Christmas special and last-ever episode would be produced.

Joanna, aged 47 and known for playing Stacey in a popular BBC comedy series, acknowledged that she immediately understood the situation when she saw James Corden’s name appear on her phone screen in January of this year.

In the Christmas edition of Radio Times, she shared that after completing a task, she pulled over at a rest stop to grab a burger on her journey home. As she glanced at her phone, it displayed, “Gavin & Stacey: rehearsal script.

In the meantime, Matthew, aged 46, who portrays his on-screen spouse Gavin, clarified, “James unexpectedly contacted me and inquired whether I was familiar with a person named Ruth Jones.

He added: ‘They didn’t tell us anything that happened in the script. But I had absolute trust.’

Joanna mentioned that she resorted to pushing her family out of her room so she could rehearse her lines, yet her 11-year-old daughter was persistent and concealed an iPad for recording under her bed in an attempt to discover what she was up to.

She laughed and commented: “I had to watch my words even at home, for fear of accidentally spilling secrets. The idea of being the one who slips up and exposes something is downright petrifying.

It comes after creators James Corden and Ruth Jones
issued a major update with their co-stars on Tuesday.

The duo joined Zoe Ball for the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast: A Gavin and Stacey Takeover ahead of the sitcom’s final ever episode.

For the three-hour special, James and Ruth welcomed Joanna Page, Mat Horne, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, and Rob Wilfort to join them.

At the event, they unveiled clues for the forthcoming climax, reminisced over cherished moments from the show, and chatted about everything related to the holiday season.

Helen Thomas, Radio 2’s Head, shared that the unique one-time Gavin and Stacey takeover of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show will serve as an extraordinary pre-festive delight for us all, leading up to the much-anticipated broadcast of the last episode on Christmas Day.

I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of Ruth, James, along with their amazing colleagues, at our broadcasting station. I look forward to creating a magical Christmas atmosphere for the Radio 2 audience!

In a conversation, Ruth revealed that some viewers of Gavin and Stacey may find themselves taken aback by the Christmas special due to the discussion about the last-ever episode with James Corden.

Eager followers of the series have long pondered over how the creators might conclude it, as they shared some hints during their discussion on Monday.

After the last episode, there are several questions left unresolved, such as what transpired following Nessa’s surprising proposal to Smithy.

Although the details of this year’s Christmas special are being closely guarded, Ruth has confirmed that they will indeed be wrapping up the sitcom.

In her interview with The Big Issue, she mentioned that the ending may differ from what viewers anticipate, and she confidently assured everyone that a return is not on the cards for us.

James remarked: “On Christmas Day, you’ll witness the conclusion of a 20-year romance tale, one that, I hope, demonstrates, in no uncertain terms, that love can be confusing and chaotic, yet universal.

Besides mentioning that, Joanna shared her experience finding the last day of shooting for the Christmas special particularly distressing. She further disclosed some deep feelings about the poignant final day on the filming location.

She mentioned that it was emotional to be on set for the final day, knowing that it would be the last time with everyone. She felt certain she would start crying the moment she stepped onto the set.

In a moment of emotion, seeing both Steve (the first assistant director) and Sophie Hebron (the second assistant director) brought on an outpouring of tears from me. Later, in my trailer, Julia Davis joined me and I continued to cry uncontrollably as the realization sank in that this long journey was coming to a close.

As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you that the experience I had was a rollercoaster of emotions. It was deeply moving, yet in the midst of it all, the final scene we shot was incredibly humorous. So, what ensued was an uncontrollable barrage of hysterical laughter followed by equally intense bouts of tears.

As we wrapped up shooting, a tranquil feeling swept over me during our last filming segment.

In that moment, I found myself reflecting on the crowd before me, their expressions etched in my memory. A sense of tranquility washed over me as I quietly marveled at our collective journey, musing to myself, “What a remarkable path we’ve walked, and how far we’ve all advanced.

After saying my final words exactly as I intended, and in the manner that felt right for me, there was an excited shout of “that’s a wrap!” followed by applause. In response, I gave Mat a warm embrace, and we stood together, tears streaming down our faces.

In another piece of news, an actor from the popular show Gavin and Stacey has announced their participation in the eagerly awaited holiday special, subtly suggesting what might transpire in the climactic finale.

Actor Steffan Rhodri, who plays Dave ‘Coaches’ Gooch on the series, has shared a tiny hint about what might happen in the last episode.

In conversation with Metro, he shared: “Character Dave is somewhat of an outcast, yet the final scene, which serves as the conclusion, brought us all close, making it quite emotional.

He mentioned that he’s unable to disclose any more details regarding the Christmas special, yet he can assure you that he will indeed be a part of it.

Steffan missed the 2019 Christmas special, meaning he hasn’t filmed for the show in 17 years.

He said: ‘I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was like putting on a pair of old trousers. It was really lovely to hang out with them again.’

As a seasoned lifestyle guide, I must say that when it comes to my coach rides, I’ve got some firm rules – “Cigarettes and marijuana, solvents and amphetamines, but I strictly prohibit the use of crack.” This phrase, often associated with the legendary coach driver Dave, encapsulates my zero-tolerance policy towards certain substances on board.

However, it might be unbeknownst to some people that Steffan modeled the character after his uncle, who happens to be a coach driver and shares a similar demeanor.

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special airs at Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
