Shonda Rhimes’ latest show hits Netflix in March 2025 (but it’s not Bridgerton)
As a binge-watching aficionado who’s been through the Shondaland mill countless times, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Netflix series, “The Residence.” With a release date set for March 2025, it’s just enough time to rewatch all my favorite TGIT shows (again) and prepare myself for the twists and turns that Shonda Rhimes always delivers.
Get ready to plan your upcoming journey to Shondaland! Coming spring, Netflix has another binge-worthy show from Shonda Rhimes lined up, but don’t get too carried away – it’s not the next season of Bridgerton just yet. As we eagerly await the return of season 4 for the romantic drama series, the murder mystery titled The Residence, produced by Shonda Rhimes, will keep us entertained in the meantime.
Netflix confirmed on Dec. 10 that the entire eight-episode season will debut on Thursday, March 20, 2025. In addition to setting the release date, they also shared the first image from the series, showcasing Emmy winner Uzo Aduba as Detective Cordelia Cupp and Randall Park as FBI Special Agent Edwin Park, who collaborates with her.
Paul William Davies, known for his work on Rhimes’ political thriller “Scandal” and the creator of the legal drama “For the People”, is behind “The Residence”. Given the immense popularity of “Scandal” and the unfortunate premature end of “For the People”, we can expect a captivating and highly entertaining murder mystery from Davies.
Presented by Shondaland, “The Residence” is a witty, mystery series unfolding within the halls of the iconic White House, featuring an assortment of peculiar staff members. This captivating production will be available on Netflix starting March 20th.

Titled “The Residence“, this story, penned by its author, is labeled as both “suspenseful” and “farcical”. The narrative unfolds within the walls of the White House, where Detective Cupp and Special Agent Park are assigned to monitor an unusual staff during a State Dinner. As the evening progresses, it becomes evident that something has gone awry, culminating in a murder within the White House’s hallowed halls. The sharp-witted detective will then set out to unmask the perpetrator.
Take a closer look at the full synopsis via Netflix’s press release:
The Residence is a comedic murder mystery unfolding within the White House, where an assortment of peculiar employees reside. Uzo Aduba plays Cordelia Cupp, a renowned detective from the Metropolitan Police Department known for her quick wit, tireless pursuit of justice, and keen insight into human nature. She is the most demanded detective globally and also enjoys birdwatching. In this story, Randall Park takes on the role of Special Agent Edwin Park from the FBI, who must collaborate with Cupp during a crucial State Dinner. Despite his reservations about Cupp’s unorthodox methods, their partnership is expected to be as captivating as the enigma they aim to solve.
Uzo Aduba leads The Residence cast
Beyond Uzo Aduba and Randall Park playing the detective and FBI agent in this series, respectively, there’s an impressive ensemble cast packed with familiar faces. As Cupp and Park delve deeper into their investigation across all eight episodes of the first season, they’ll cross paths with a variety of politicians, staffers, Senators, family members, and others – some of whom move in and out of the White House.
Among the stars gracing the ensemble are Giancarlo Esposito, who charmed audiences on “Breaking Bad”, Edwina Findley from “If Loving You Is Wrong”, Susan Kelechi Watson, a standout in “This Is Us”, Ken Marino, known for his humor on “Party Down” and many other shows, to name just a few. In truth, the producers have amassed an abundance of talented actors for this production!
For those pondering who assumes the presidency in the United States, fans of the show Veep might recognize Paul Fitzgerald (now residing in the White House!) as President Perry Morgan. Similarly, Barrett Foa, known for NCIS: Los Angeles, portrays Elliot Morgan, the First Gentleman. Additionally, Jason Lee from My Name Is Earl joins the presidential family as Tripp Morgan, the president’s brother. Are you enjoying this administration?
Check out some of the show’s cast members and their character names:
- Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp
