Shows coming in 2025 that you won’t want to miss
As a dedicated television enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating worlds of various series, I find myself utterly thrilled at the plethora of exciting new shows set to grace our screens in 2025! From the gritty streets of London to the sun-kissed shores of Australia, these upcoming productions promise a diverse array of stories that will captivate and entertain audiences far and wide.
A captivating blend of fresh dramas is coming up, featuring highly anticipated BBC originals like the return of Sally Wainwright (creator of Happy Valley), as well as compelling ITV series starring personalities such as Martin Clunes and James Norton.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but remind myself that some highly anticipated Netflix series are on their way! The heart-wrenching finale of “Stranger Things” is just around the corner, and who could forget about “Wednesday,” which will be back for another season, bringing along a whole bunch of fresh faces.
Here are the best shows coming in 2025.
Playing Nice
ITV, January 2025
In this fresh drama, which is adapted from a popular book of the same title by JP Delaney, James Norton (known for “Happy Valley”) and Niamh Algar (famous for her role in “The Virtues” on Channel 4) take the leading roles.
Grace Ofori-Attah, the writer behind ITV’s “Malpractice,” has reworked this tale. It focuses on two sets of parents who uncover a hospital blunder where their young children were mistakenly exchanged at birth.
Missing You
Netflix, January 1
This coming New Year’s Day, Harlan Coben offers a new delight – a television adaptation of yet another one of his top-selling books titled “Missing You“.
There’s a strong possibility that future works may find it challenging to surpass the acclaim achieved by his 2024 hit, “Fool Me Once,” starring Michelle Keegan, which broke into the rankings of the most-watched Netflix shows ever.
With such a talented lineup, featuring Ashley Walters from “Top Boy”, Rosalind Eleazar of “Slow Horses”, James Nesbitt known for “The Missing”, the esteemed Sir Lenny Henry from “Rings of Power” and Steve Pemberton of “Inside No. 9”, this production is definitely worth watching.
Besides hinting at it, Coben suggests that the narrative might turn out to be his most captivating yet, with him characterizing the conclusion as an unexpected twist.
Adolescence
Netflix
As a game enthusiast, I can’t wait to get my hands on the upcoming British crime drama, although the official release date hasn’t been announced yet. Fingers crossed it drops sometime in 2025!
This British-produced series features Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters as its stars. Notably, it will reunite Graham with screenwriter Jack Thorne, who has collaborated with him on projects like Channel 4’s “Help,” “The Virtues,” and “This Is England” in the past.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t wait for the upcoming four-episode series! Each episode is designed to play out like a standalone movie, with the action happening in real-time right before my eyes. It promises an immersive and thrilling experience!
Wednesday, season 2
Netflix, 2025
For nearly three years now, the cultural impact of the Netflix series inspired by the Addams Family has been evident. Ever since its debut, fans have eagerly anticipated additional episodes, and it seems that 2025 might finally bring us more!
Jenna Ortega is set to reprise her role in the main character position, having delivered outstanding performances recently on our television screens. Joining her will be newly added cast members Lady Gaga (yes, following her widely-shared dance video), Christopher Lloyd who was previously known for his role as Uncle Fester, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, and Thandiwe Newton.
Stranger Things, season 5
Netflix, 2025
2023 looks like it’ll be an exciting year for me as a fan, as the final season of “Stranger Things” – undeniably one of Netflix’s biggest hits – is set to air.
Three years later, the iconic ’80s science fiction series is back for its fifth and concluding season, allowing us to reconnect with the original Stranger Things crew as they battle their ultimate nemesis, Vecna, in a final showdown.
The actors have been actively sharing sneak peeks of what viewers could be in store for, and most recently, David Harbour hinted that the last episode left them all in tears – so grab those tissues, everyone!
Black Mirror, season 7
Netflix, 2025
I can hardly contain my excitement! Next year, it’s Charlie Brooker’s turn to unveil another set of six captivating episodes from his dystopian anthology series. And here’s a little sneak peek: one of these tales is promised to be the most dismal yet. Sounds like just the right dose of grimness for me!
Just as Black Mirror consistently delivers, a lengthy cast announcement has been made featuring some familiar faces. These include Peter Capaldi from Doctor Who, Emma Corrin known for The Crown, Killing Eve’s Harriet Walter, and Barbie star Issa Rae.
Caught
Netflix
Indeed, we’re all geared up to air two Harlan Coben series in 2025. One of them is a Spanish-language version, titled “Caught” or “Atrapados“, which was filmed in Buenos Aires and Bariloche.
Following the pattern of another book he wrote, the story revolves around a journalist who apprehends elusive criminals. However, as one might anticipate, her life experiences an unforeseen change.
The ensemble features Soledad Villamil, known for “The Secret in Their Eyes,” Alberto Ammann recognized from “Narcos,” Juan Minujín, and Matías Recalt, who were also seen in one of Netflix’s highly viewed films titled “Society of the Snow.
Toxic Town
Netflix
The drama series, “Toxic Town,” penned by acclaimed writer Jack Thorne, is inspired by the Corby poisonings and the subsequent court case.
Featuring Jodie Whittaker (known for her role in Doctor Who), Aimee Lou Wood (star of Sex Education and Daddy Issues), Rory Kinnear (famous for Bank of Dave), Claudia Jessie (a regular on Bridgerton), Michael Socha (renowned from This Is England and Showtrial) and Joe Dempsie (best known for his work on Game of Thrones), the British production boasts a talented ensemble.
Doctor Who
BBC and Disney Plus, 2025
Regardless of whether it’s the second or the fifteenth, Ncuti Gatwa’s lively and utterly charming portrayal of the Fifteenth Doctor is set to return for a complete new season in 2025, with Russell T Davies continuing as the director.
Just like many other major shows from the BBC, details about the upcoming Christmas special are being tightly guarded, with most other expectations also remaining a secret for now.
But we’re fairly certain the new season will be worth marking your calendars for.
Riot Women
BBC
The creator of “Happy Valley,” Sally Wainwright, is coming back to the BBC with a fresh drama series, and we can’t wait!
In keeping with its powerful title, “Riot Women” promises to portray the journey of a female punk-rock group, while simultaneously exploring the everyday challenges and annoyances that come with being a woman.
The series is bringing together some powerhouse actors, including Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood), Joanna Scanlan (Slow Horses, The Thick of It), Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner, Suspect), Rosalie Craig (Netflix’s 1899) and Amelia Bullmore (The Jetty).
Miss Austen
BBC, 2025
Instead of retelling Jane Austen’s life in the traditional manner, this BBC historical drama will adapt Gill Hornby’s popular novel, narrating events as experienced by Jane Austen’s sister.
In 2025, the series “Miss Austen” will be aired, commemorating 250 years since Jane Austen’s birth. The notable actress Keeley Hawes (“Line of Duty”, “It’s a Sin”) is set to play Cassandra Austen in the lead role. Other cast members include Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”), Alfred Enoch (“How to Get Away with Murder”), and Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”).
Film Club
BBC, 2025
In simple terms, this is a drama series set in Manchester, partially penned by actor Aimee Lou Wood from “Sex Education.” The show explores the friendship of two individuals who are confronting the possibility of deeper feelings for each other.
In addition to Nabhaan Rizwan, who has recently appeared in Netflix’s “Kaos”, Wood will share the screen. Other cast members include Suranne Jones, known for her roles in “Vigil” and “Gentleman Jack”, as well as Adam Long, who previously acted in “Happy Valley”.
The Last of Us, season 2
HBO/Sky, 2025
Without a doubt, among the most significant series to emerge in recent years, I can’t wait for my personal favorite, “The Last of Us,” to make its long-anticipated comeback next year.
In a follow-up, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie. We’ve been given some tantalizing hints about new characters to fuel our anticipation even further.
For those of us who’ve taken care to steer clear of spoilers, being ready for another round of despair and heartache as we delve into season two of “The Last of Us”…
The Bear, season 4
Disney Plus, 2025
Despite some varying opinions, The Bear’s third season remains one of the top-tier dramas currently airing on television.
Since its premiere in 2022, the FX/Disney series has made a tradition of launching a new season annually. Therefore, it came as no shock when it was announced that the fourth and last season would be released in 2025.
As a gamer, here’s how I might put it:
The Handmaid’s Tale, season 6
Spring, 2025
It’s been a while coming, but we’re saying goodbye to “The Handmaid’s Tale” next year as its sixth and final season is set to air.
Expressing in a more natural and easy-to-understand manner: Bruce Miller, who adapted Margaret Atwood’s hit dystopian novel for screen, previously expressed it as an honor to bring the story to life. He added that unfortunately, the story’s relevance has persisted throughout its run.
Elizabeth Moss, who plays the lead role of June from the start, will additionally take on directing duties for four forthcoming episodes.
The White Lotus, season 3
HBO/Sky, 2025
With a fresh setting and an array of novice hotel visitors, “The White Lotus” will come back next year with another captivating mystery set in the warmth of the sun.
Jason Isaacs and Aimee Lou Wood are two of the newly announced actors joining Mike White’s popular series, and it was also confirmed that Natasha Rothwell, known for her relationship with Jennifer Coolidge’s character, will be reappearing on the show.
And Just Like That, season 3
HBO/Sky, 2025
Despite its imperfections, we can’t help but eagerly anticipate each passing day for the arrival of new episodes in the Sex and the City spin-off.
Is Carrie still single, or has there been an Aidan reunion? We couldn’t help but wonder…
Task
HBO/Sky, 2025
Mark Ruffalo stars in this new limited crime series from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby.
The story is situated on the outskirts of Philadelphia, focusing on an FBI agent leading a task force determined to halt a series of drug-related home burglaries.
Prime Target
Apple TV+, January 22, 2025
In a nutshell, Leo Woodall from “One Day” and Quintessa Swindell known for her roles in “Trinkets” and “Euphoria” headline this intriguing drama series on Apple TV+. The show has been thoughtfully crafted by the esteemed Steve Thompson, who previously worked on “Sherlock”.
Gangs of London, season 3
Sky, 2025
Following its popularity – likely capturing a broader viewer base – after being added to Netflix at the start of this year, the third season of “Gangs of London” will debut exclusively on Sky in 2025.
Actor Sope Dirisu reprises his role as the former police officer turned gangster Elliot Carter, sharing screen time with Joe Cole’s character, Sean Wallace who heads a criminal enterprise, in the upcoming series.
Ten Pound Poms, season 2
BBC, 2025
Michelle Keegan’s well-known period drama was among the UK’s top new dramas of last year, and we’re soon heading back to 1950s’ Australia to rejoin nurse Kate and the other expatriates where we left off.
Unforgotten, season 6
ITV, 2025
In a highly anticipated return, the critically-acclaimed and popular crime series by screenwriter Chris Lang is coming back with more episodes. This time, DCI Jess James, portrayed by Sinéad Keenan, and DI Sunny Khan, played by Sanjeev Bhaskar, will delve into another intriguing cold case.
Protection
ITV, 2025
In this freshly released suspenseful drama, Siobhan Finneran from “Happy Valley”, Katherine Kelly of “The Long Shadow”, and Nadine Marshall in “Sherwood” join forces. The narrative revolves around Detective Inspector Liz Nyles, portrayed by Finneran, who becomes entangled in a problem with the witness protection system due to an unexpected loophole.
Out There
ITV, 2025
In this fresh show, Martin Clunes (from “Doc Martin”) takes on the role of a Welsh farmer, endeavoring to uncover the mysteries unfolding on his farmland.
Although the specific launch date hasn’t been disclosed yet, we’ve already got a sneak peek with the trailer, and we anticipate its premiere sometime during the year 2025.
