Cillian Murphy seemingly pops up in trailer for 28 Years Later, and he looks terrifying
As a die-hard fan of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s gritty, post-apocalyptic masterpiece, “28 Days Later,” I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel, “28 Years Later.” The original film left an indelible mark on me, and its fast-paced, terrifying zombies have been a benchmark in the genre ever since.
The 2002 movie “28 Days Later” continues to captivate its audience, with fans finding it hard to move on. Unlike traditional zombies seen in shows like “The Walking Dead” or “Night of the Living Dead”, those in “28 Days Later” were swift, aggressive, and relentless. A sequel titled “28 Weeks Later” was released in 2007, but it didn’t feature the original creative team. Now, more than two decades after its debut, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are returning to lead the charge for “28 Years Later”, a follow-up set post-apocalyptic society’s devastation by the zombie outbreak, as is common in such scenarios.
Earlier today, Sony unveiled the chilling trailer for “28 Years Later,” and it’s downright terrifying, especially when accompanied by a haunting recitation of Rudyard Kipling’s 1903 poem “Boots.” In this film, actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes portray characters residing within a fortified city. A stack of skulls and a close-up shot of Aaron Taylor-Johnson are featured, along with what appears to be a brief appearance by a familiar face around the 1 hour, 48 minute mark. Check it out below:
At that specific moment, it appears as though actor Cillian Murphy suddenly emerges, looking gaunt and undead. Notably, Murphy garnered an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in “Oppenheimer.” In the original “28 Days Later,” he portrayed Jim, a bicycle courier who was alive at the end of the film. If that figure in the trailer truly is him, it’s clear that events took a turn for the worse following that point.
A representative from Sony has mentioned that Murphy will appear in “28 Years Later” in an unexpected and developing manner. His reappearance as a zombie certainly fits the bill for “unexpected,” but it seems that the surprise was spoiled by revealing this in the trailer prematurely.
We’ll get all the details when 28 Years Later hits theaters on June 20, 2025.
