House of the Dragon star Emma D'Arcy shared delighted reaction to Golden Globe nomination

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional characters and groundbreaking performances, I find myself utterly captivated by the journey of Emma D’Arcy. Their nomination for a Golden Globe for their portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon” has me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the outcome.

Recently, it was announced that Emma D’Arcy has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, for their portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’. Interestingly, D’Arcy had also been nominated for the first season of this prequel to ‘Game of Thrones’, but lost out to Zendaya from ‘Euphoria’. This time around, D’Arcy is competing against some formidable actresses including Kathy Bates, Maya Erskine, Keira Knightley, Keri Russell, and Anna Sawai. Could this finally be their year?

Regardless of whether D’Arcy takes home the award or not, they are ecstatic about being nominated alongside such esteemed peers. They expressed this sentiment to Variety by saying, “It’s just mind-boggling to think that I could be associated with these actors who I’ve admired for so long. It’s like a dream come true, and days like this make me feel like I should pinch myself.

D’Arcy mentioned they received the nomination news while they were asleep in Texas due to time zone differences. They were woken up by their partner, which was unexpected and initially caused concern: “I was fast asleep when my wonderful partner called me, which was a bit strange. My initial thought was that something had gone wrong. But then I found out the good news instead!” D’Arcy also shared that they’ve been communicating with their House of the Dragon castmates and colleagues to celebrate the announcement: “Since we’re lucky enough for my coworkers on the show to be among my closest friends, we keep in touch frequently.

Emma D’Arcy is looking forward to representing House of the Dragon at the Golden Gloves before making season 3

Reflecting on their conversation with Gold Derby, D’Arcy recalled the feeling of getting a Golden Globe nomination last time. “At the event,” they said, “my body was constantly in a state of high alert, an exhilarating response unlike anything I’d felt before.” However, they added, “I see things differently now, and this series holds a special place in my heart. The passion I have for the show and its creators is overwhelming. It’s emotional for me to consider all the effort that went into making it.

Based on her past experience, D’Arcy feels confident that they are prepared for the upcoming event, which will air on CBS on Sunday, January 5: “I believe I’ll manage to remain in control of my body this time. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent the show and all the hard work we put into it before we start filming another one.

Based on what we know so far, D’Arcy and the team behind “House of the Dragon” are planning to start filming another season around March 2025. This suggests that the third season might not air until 2026. In the interim, D’Arcy enjoys engaging with fans. As they put it, “I encounter many people in my life – it’s a wonderful, very touching aspect of my profession. People are quite expressive about their connection to the work. One of the delightful aspects of long-running TV shows is that both the actor and the audience develop a lasting bond with these characters, and that feels particularly meaningful to me.

Ultimately, D’Arcy was queried about the significance of receiving such recognition as a nonbinary actor. In response, they expressed, “I suppose my sentiment is that the greater the presence of trans and gender non-conforming individuals within the industry, the more room I anticipate we’ll create for people from all backgrounds to feel at ease with their self-expression.” Put simply, it’s not overly complex, but I am deeply honored to represent our community in this manner.

At the upcoming January 5th ceremony, only D’Arcy from House of the Dragon is nominated, which is a step down compared to when the show was up for Golden Globe awards last time. Previously, House of the Dragon won the award for Best Drama at the 2023 ceremony, but this year it isn’t even nominated. It seems D’Arcy might not win – Anna Sawai from Shogun appears to be the favorite – just being nominated alongside such esteemed company is an achievement in itself. Who knows? Maybe there will be a surprise.
