As a dedicated player of Genshin Impact and a firm believer in fair play, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see HoYoverse taking such decisive action against copyright violations. The $1.5 million fine slapped on this cheat software developer is a clear message that no one can trample on the rights of hardworking game developers.
HoYoverse, the company responsible for hit games such as Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, recently emerged victorious in a significant legal dispute with a developer of cheat software. To add insult to injury, this developer has been penalized with a hefty fine of $1.5 million due to the infringement of Genshin Impact‘s copyright.
HoYoverse has a history of taking strict legal action against cheats and hacks
The case was brought to court by DLA Piper, representing HoYoverse’s legal entity, Cognosphere Pte. Ltd. The lawsuit focused on cheats created by the developer, who is noted to be a self-proclaimed hacker. This particular cheat software in question was designed to modify gameplay in Genshin Impact, which violates copyright laws and technological protection measures (TPMs) of the title.
In the verdict, it was decided that the defendant had violated HoYoverse’s copyright. The court ordered the offender to pay $1.5 million as compensation for this violation. Furthermore, the court also made an order prohibiting the defendant from infringing upon HoYoverse’s rights in the future.
Historically, HoYoverse has been firm with its copyright enforcement, taking action since the launch of Genshin Impact. In 2022 alone, three individuals received four-year prison sentences for creating unauthorized cheats and hacks, and a significant dispute involving leaker Ubatcha also emerged, resulting in a court injunction against him.
In the following year, measures were taken legally concerning the Fontaine leaks, and during HoYoverse’s Anti-Infringement Campaign, a group peddling Genshin Impact cheats was arrested as well. This case may have resulted in significant financial penalties for the creator of the cheat software, but unlike other cases involving HoYoverse mentioned here, it did not result in jail time.
