Channel Seven poaches rising TV star in coup that will send shockwaves through industry - in a devastating blow for Nine's future

As an ardent admirer of the McGuire dynasty, I can hardly contain my excitement at the latest developments in their illustrious career. Xander McGuire, the shining star of Nine, is set to dazzle us further as he joins forces with Channel Seven. Born into a family where celebrity and sports are as common as morning coffee, Xander has been groomed for greatness since his Collingwood matches with dear old Dad.

EXCLUSIVE

Channel Seven is set to declare that they have successfully persuaded Eddie McGuire’s son to switch allegiance from Nine, adding another talented individual to their growing roster of stars poached from their competition.

Australian Daily Mail discloses that Xander McGuire, aged 21 and eldest son of Eddie and his financial advisor spouse Carla, is set to assume an enlarged function within both Seven’s news and sports departments as part of an endeavor to intensify competition against Nine.

In 2022, Xander joined the network and soon became one of Nine’s brightest prospects. Sports broadcaster Tony Jones, after observing him for nearly four decades, praised him as “an exceptional young reporter, arguably the best I’ve seen in almost 40 years.” This accolade was given after Xander had already reached an agreement with Seven.

It’s known that Team Seven intended to announce their new top player in Melbourne’s Herald Sun on Wednesday itself, a decision likely to create ripples throughout the football-obsessed city, given that the McGuire family is highly influential in both media and sports circles there.

As a lifestyle advisor, I find myself reflecting on the recent developments in the Australian sports broadcasting landscape. Just a few days ago, it was announced that Seven Network has recruited Eddie McGuire for the production of not one, but two new Aussie Rules discussion programs slated for the 2025 season. This move, accompanied by a deal that places him in direct competition with his long-standing home at Nine, promises to add an intriguing dynamic to the sports broadcasting arena.

One of the upcoming shows produced by McGuire’s company, JAM TV, is expected to be titled “Sunday Football Feast” and will compete directly with Nine’s established “Sunday Football Show.

On Sunday afternoons, following Seven’s live and exclusive football broadcast, the second performance titled “The Wash” will take place.

Seven has significantly weakened or diminished Nine’s Football Classified show by poaching high-profile presenters such as Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson, and Craig Hutchison this year. Additionally, they have managed to persuade St Kilda legend and former Fox Sports host Nick Riewoldt to come out of retirement and return to television.

The arrest of Xander McGuire might bring additional troubles for Nine, as they grapple with the aftermath of their damaging external probe regarding a toxic work environment and continue to implement stringent budget reductions.

For quite some time, Xander has enjoyed recognition akin to a local star in Melbourne, dating back to when he started attending Collingwood football games with his renowned dad over two decades ago, and also gracing the red carpets alongside his mom Carla and sibling Joe at various events.

Back in 2015, at only 12 years old, I got my big break right in front of the camera, starring on the long-running TV drama Neighbours, which airs on Channel Ten. Quite a momentous start to my career, if I do say so myself!

Initially, this young acting talent landed a recurring role as troubled teenager Charlie Hoyland, who was the son of a well-established character named Steph Scully, played by Carla Bonner. Later on, he chose to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, following in his father’s footsteps.

In May, the prize-winning young talent decided to step away from his sports journalism responsibilities for a period of six months to finish the political studies part of his Melbourne University arts degree at the University of St Andrews located in Scotland.

Despite expressing enthusiasm for returning to Nine upon finishing his overseas study journey, it was disclosed by Daily Mail Australia a month ago that he had actually been discussing a switch to Seven network earlier on.

Eddie, his father, kick-started his career in television at Ten in the 80s as a young sports reporter. Later, in 1993, he moved to Nine where he hosted Who Wants to be a Millionaire and served as their CEO for a short period in 2006.

He acknowledged driving his son to the audition for the Neighbours show, but stressed that he had no influence over his casting. Instead, he stated that Xander secured the role entirely through his own efforts and on the basis of his talent.

As a die-hard football enthusiast, I can’t help but admire the way Eddie and Xander effortlessly discuss the game. Yet, when it comes to actual performance on the field, there’s no denying that Joe McGuire has left a more indelible mark of success.

This year, a gifted athlete joined the ranks of one of the top American university football teams, Ohio State University.

Often referred to as the Buckeyes, this elite team boasts a record eight national championship titles and consistently plays before over 100,000 spectators at their home arena.

As a die-hard admirer, let me share that I, standing tall at 6’2″ and tipping the scales at a formidable 96kg, joined the team last July, stepping up to support my fellow Aussie punter, Jesse Mirco.
