Deus Irae (Screambox, Dec. 10)

Get ready for a merciless, terrifying ordeal in the latest Argentine exorcism horror movie, which is Pedro Cristiani’s first full-length directorial effort. Adapted from its short film counterpart, Deus Irae follows the enigmatic life of Father Javier, a man who leads a fascinating dual existence.

Beyond aiding families claiming they’ve experienced extraordinary events, Javier collaborates with disavowed clergy employing unusual exorcism practices, which involve fire and guns among other methods. In the face of his most formidable test—overpowering the Devil—Father Javier grapples with determining how much of his human essence he is willing to forfeit to achieve his objective.

In the book titled “The Soul Eater” by Alexis Laipsker, the story revolves around a legendary being that consumes souls, just as its name suggests.

As a fervent movie enthusiast, I delved into an intriguing exploration of a series of chilling deaths in a quaint village, each seemingly linked to the haunting legend about this fearsome creature. This gripping tale was brought to life by Dark Sky Films and masterfully directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, whose impressive portfolio includes the terrifying films The Deep House, Inside, and the chilling Leatherface.

1992 (Netflix, Dec. 13)

This coming Friday, a Spanish miniseries directed by renowned filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia will debut. Titled 1992, it centers around a string of murders with a consistent pattern: each victim is found charred and placed next to a Curro doll, the emblem of Seville’s 1992 Expo. As more deaths occur, it becomes clear that they are interconnected. A widow mourning her loss and a former police officer join forces to unravel this mystery.

The Activated Man (VOD, Dec. 13)

A number of well-known figures from various genres will appear in this chilling supernatural movie premiering this Friday, featuring the late Tony Todd, Kane Hodder, Sean Young, among others. The narrative centers around Ors, portrayed by Jamie Costa, who is grappling with his grief following the loss of both his best friend and his beloved pet dog.

Struggling with the trauma, his grip on reality seems to shatter, leaving him puzzled about what is genuine and what is illusory. This uncertainty intensifies when a spike in murder-suicides sweeps through the city, causing Ors to ponder if it’s merely a figment of his imagination or an actual event. Dexter: Original Sin (Paramount+ with Showtime, Dec. 13)

Dexter Morgan is back! A prequel to the award-winning Showtime series Dexter: Original Sin takes place in 1991 Miami and follows a much younger Dexter as he slowly turns into the serial killer we all know him as.

In this new series, Dexter’s unique bond with his father, Harry (portrayed by Christian Slater), will be at the forefront. Harry instructs Dexter in an ancient “Code” that channels his killing instinct towards people who truly deserve it, all while keeping him hidden from the law enforcement. Michael C. Hall reprises his role as narrator. The series initially airs on Paramount+ via their app on a Friday, and then broadcasts on television for the first time on Sunday, December 15.

The Man in the White Van (VOD, Dec. 13)

1975, in Florida, a young girl experiences unease as a mysterious white van persistently tails her, but her parents dismiss her concerns despite reports of missing persons and growing speculation about an active serial killer. What Lurks Beneath (VOD, Dec. 13)

As a gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the chilling world of What Lurks Beneath! This movie blends the terrifying allure of evil mermaids with the nerve-wracking confines of a submarine, promising an unparalleled horror adventure. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, the entire film is shot from within the sub, ratcheting up the tension to unbearable levels. The crew and I are taken aback when we find a mysterious woman hidden in one of our torpedo tubes. What makes her even more intriguing is her uncanny ability to communicate telepathically with some of us onboard – a secret that’s sure to add another layer of suspense!

Mudbrick (VOD, Dec. 13)

Lovers of folk horror and occult films should definitely check out “Mudbrick“, a tale about a man receiving an inheritance of a house in Eastern Europe, unveiling a chilling secret from his past linking him to an ancient Slavic pagan cult.

The movie produced by Gravitas Ventures features Philip Brodie, Andrew Howard, Kamka Tocinovski, Dusica Nastova, Joakim Tasic, Predrag Momcilovic, and Lauren Sivan in leading roles.

Forever Mine (VOD, Dec. 13)

As a gamer, I’d say: In the twisted world of D.C. Hamilton’s thrillers, like “The Midnight Man” and “Forever Mine,” I find myself trapped in a complex web of matrimony. I thought marrying Erica (Brinna Kelly) would be a piece of cake, but boy, was I wrong! It turns out she’s not just any ordinary bride; she’s a cunning black widow with a trail of deceased husbands. Little did I know, our marriage would become a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, where survival is the only prize worth fighting for.
