Outlander star John Berry (Lord John Grey) shares regrets about surprising sex scene

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of viewing experiences under my belt, I must say that the latest episode of Outlander left me utterly spellbound. The death of Jamie Fraser, the heart and soul of the series, sent shockwaves through the fandom, and the mournful union between Claire and Lord John Grey was a poignant testament to their shared sorrow.

In the recent installment of “Outlander,” titled “A Hundredweight of Stones,” fans were left stunned as the central character, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), met a tragic end when his ship sank at sea. This left his wife Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and close friend Lord John Grey (John Berry) grieving in Philadelphia. However, their mourning was complicated due to Claire being pursued by redcoats, forcing her to accept Lord John’s proposal of marriage for safety reasons. Despite the union, neither were in love, only mourning the loss of Jamie.

The characters displayed their complex emotions in an unexpected, emotionally charged scene, filled with anger and tears, which seemed more centered around Jamie than their relationship. As Berry explained to Entertainment Weekly, “He’s so isolated. No one is there for him, and he’s bearing all this pain, not just his own but hers too. He eventually hits a breaking point, pleading, ‘I simply need someone to embrace me and help me get through this.’

It was always going to be a weird sex scene. I was excited by it because it was something that I’d never seen on TV before. The things that really excite me about Outlander are these moments of, ‘What the hell? How do you inject a humanity into this?’

The Outlander series is well-known for its explicit love scenes, yet this particular one was less graphic than usual. Sam Heughan, who portrays Jamie Fraser in the show, expressed his desire for the scene to be truer to Diana Gabaldon’s books, which provided a more detailed account of Claire and Lord John’s relationship. “On paper, there was a lot more depth,” he stated. “I was eager to delve deeper into it, and I would have been content to push boundaries a bit further. However, we agreed on a compromise where we didn’t go as far as I had hoped, and I do feel a hint of curiosity and a touch of regret that we didn’t dare to explore it more thoroughly.

What was written on the page is that there’s an animalistic passion, and unfortunately, I don’t really think that is translated to screen. There was definitely a passion component that I’m not sure that we quite captured in that moment. There is something that will forever haunt me — how do these two end up in a moment of intimate passion and union? It still confuses me, and I don’t know that we completely solved it.

In relation to the topic of diversity, Berry expressed that certain aspects in the environment seemed to be lacking, and he desired to create a more personal, private atmosphere.

Is Jamie “reckless” for letting William find out the truth about his parentage that way?

The day after their heart-to-heart, Claire and John appear to find balance in their altered lives, but this tranquility is disrupted when Jamie miraculously walks in, having survived the sunk ship. However, a fresh predicament surfaces: it’s discovered that William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart), whom Lord John had been nurturing as his adopted son, was actually Jamie’s biological child. To make matters worse, redcoats began searching for Jamie, forcing the group to separate and evade arrest. The situation quickly spirals out of control.

Berry mentioned that William was shocked to discover Lord John’s distress over Jamie’s carelessness. They had been extremely cautious about this matter throughout, so for such a significant revelation to emerge in such an unexpected manner is the most unfortunate scenario imaginable for both Lord John and William.

Although Lord John is perhaps misguided in his own responsibility for the way that this happened. Perhaps he should have anticipated that this would be the result of keeping a secret. If you don’t have an honest relationship with somebody, then secrets have a way of finding themselves out, and then you have to deal with the repercussions of keeping a secret from somebody.

Indeed, I myself am unaware that Lord John and Claire have been sharing intimate moments, a fact that remains hidden from Jamie. It seems this revelation could prove quite shocking when it eventually surfaces.

Sam Heughan was “surprised” by Jamie’s brutal reaction to Lord John and Claire getting together

It’s clear that Jamie will eventually discover the incident involving Claire and Lord John, and it appears his reaction won’t be positive. According to Sam Heughan, “I was taken aback by how Claire and John’s encounter affected him. His ruthlessness, perhaps that’s what makes him human. I believe the consequences or the strain in their relationship is something Jamie and Claire have not faced for a long time.

Samuel playfully hints at an intense confrontation between Jamie and Claire in the next episode of Outlander, which seems to be the fallout from a significant incident. It appears that the ripples of these events will extend beyond this episode, persisting through “a large portion of the current season” and even into Season 8.

Berry suggests that the incident involving Claire and Lord John will cause significant aftershocks for everyone involved, possibly leading to unhappiness all around. He explains that this event stirs up deep-seated feelings of anger and resentment within Lord John, and fundamentally harms their relationship.

Working through it all seemed quite challenging for Caitriona Balfe. She confessed that the workweek was tough, and she wasn’t hiding the fact. Each day, when she woke up, she would realize they had more of the same to do, which didn’t make for an easy start.

If that all sounds fun, new episodes of Outlander air Fridays on Starz!
