Skeleton Crew reminds us why George Lucas believed Star Wars should be for kids
As a child of the ’80s who grew up with Star Wars being an integral part of my formative years, I can confidently say that George Lucas’ original vision for the franchise has always held a special place in my heart. The idea of a galaxy far, far away filled with wonder, adventure, and hope resonated deeply with me, providing solace during difficult times and fueling my imagination as I dreamed of space battles and intergalactic journeys.
The timely arrival of the “Skeleton Crew” could serve as a reminder that the essence of Star Wars remains deeply rooted in its appeal to children.
As a devoted Star Wars fan, I can’t help but appreciate George Lucas’ vision when he crafted this epic saga. He aimed his masterpiece squarely at us, the young ones. For him, life could be harsh and we needed a guide to navigate its challenges – growing up, leaving home, and standing strong for what we treasure. This theme was close to Lucas’ heart throughout his creative journey with Star Wars, but it wasn’t without controversy.
In today’s Star Wars era, there’s a group advocating for more mature content. Many fans yearn for Star Wars to delve into adult topics like relationships and substances. While Andor demonstrates the appeal of an adult-focused Star Wars, Skeleton Crew emphasizes the value in maintaining stories that reflect the challenges faced by children as they grow up, ensuring that both adults and kids can find enjoyment within its narrative.
The opening episodes of the series have been praised by both fans and critics, making me ecstatic for the creative team. Moreover, this success highlights something crucial: not every Star Wars tale should cater solely to adults. Keeping it adult-only would strip away the charm and essence that made the franchise dear to millions. Instead, there should be space for Star Wars to embrace silliness, humor, lightheartedness, and enchantment – elements that George Lucas intended. We shouldn’t shy away from a show due to its whimsy, as even George Lucas himself wouldn’t support such a viewpoint.
In creating an intriguing narrative filled with enigma and tension, the animated series Skeleton Crew caters to both children and adults alike. The stunning visuals, captivating soundtrack, and a talented cast draw interest from viewers of all ages, making it just what the franchise requires for wider appeal.
At times, it’s not necessary to create something entirely novel and overhaul the essence of an existing concept. Instead, as seen in Jon Watts and Christopher Ford’s work Skeleton Crew, you can amplify all the space-adventure aspects that George Lucas initially provided, while maintaining interest through the use of enigmas and suspense.
Skeleton Crew is streaming on Disney+.
