Dune: Prophecy episode 4 review: Valya’s plans are derailed when the Emperor unleashes his secret weapon
As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of epic storytelling, I must say that the fourth episode of Dune: Prophecy has been a thrilling rollercoaster ride thus far! The intricate web of politics and power play is reminiscent of my favorite strategy games, where every move counts and alliances shift like desert sands.
Approaching its midpoint, the fourth episode of “Dune: Prophecy” escalates the suspense, with Valya devising a strategy to regain the Emperor’s favor.
The story begins with all the Acolytes seemingly experiencing the same terrifying dream. Upon learning this, Tula becomes determined to uncover the content of their dreams, inducing a trance for them to re-live it and sketch what they perceive. Two key elements in their dream are Shai Hulud and two enigmatic eyes glaring from the shadows, both symbols pointing towards Desmond Hart, who was reborn after being ingested by a sandworm and poses an unseen danger to the Sisterhood.
During this time, Valya meets up with her family once more, an encounter that, unsurprisingly, doesn’t bring joy. Instead of offering assistance, she’s there to extract something from them. With her departure from the palace, she seeks a means to regain favor with the Emperor. The most effective strategy appears to be as a Truthsayer for a prominent house, specifically House Harkonnen in this instance, given her ability to control and leverage Hanno’s ambition for recognition among the other nobles.
Through her network, she subtly circulates whispers about Pruitt Richese’s demise, implying that an investigation is warranted. Since none of them are keen to initiate such a request themselves, they instead extend an invitation to House Harkonnen to join the council, thereby allowing them to instigate an inquest on behalf of everyone else.
In this episode, Valya’s political scheming and cunning strategies are once again at the forefront. Time and time again, she skillfully extricates herself from tough predicaments by meticulously planning her moves. Her family is continually reminded that her allegiance to House Harkonnen lies not in what she can contribute, but rather in what she stands to gain from them. Despite their requests for a Truthsayer four times now – an alliance that would have significantly bolstered their reputation among other houses – Valya persistently refuses.
A significant advancement unfolds as Empress Natalya chooses to utilize Hart effectively. She dispatches him to locate rebels plotting against the palace, with instructions to present them before the council and execute them publicly. This action serves as a demonstration of the Emperor’s hidden weapon, forcing Hart to take a stand and act decisively rather than simply observe the situation. Consequently, he has made a crucial move that demands further assertive actions.
This incident disrupted Valya’s strategies since she was aware of the rebel assault on the council, intending to intervene at the eleventh hour to halt it, thereby demonstrating her allegiance to Corrino. Her hope was that this act would earn her a warm reception back into the palace by him.
It might be beneficial to incorporate more action into the series, as the political intrigue while engaging, doesn’t quite reach the depth that fully hooks viewers. There are moments in the show that seem slow or uneventful. Adding action could make it feel more like Denis Villeneuve’s films, where action and combat play a significant role in their appeal.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that this latest installment might be one of the most impactful ones so far, as it has significantly shifted the power dynamics. Valya, who was previously the dominant figure, has been dethroned, and her position has been taken by both the Emperor and Desmond Hart. This leaves plenty of opportunities for twists and turns in the remaining two episodes.
