Doctor Who newcomer Nicola Coughlan jokes it’s ‘really lovely’ to star in a ‘family-friendly’ show for once after taking the lead in bonkbuster Bridgerton

As a follower who has witnessed the meteoric rise of talent like Nicola Coughlan, I can confidently say that her journey from the opulent world of Bridgerton to the enigmatic realm of Doctor Who is nothing short of extraordinary. Having seen her gracefully navigate through steamy Regency-era romances and now preparing for interstellar adventures, it’s safe to say she has truly mastered the art of time travel – or at least, genre hopping!

Recently joined Doctor Who actress Nicola Coughlan playfully comments on the pleasure of starring in a family-friendly production, a refreshing change from her leading role in the steamy series Bridgerton earlier this year.

This year, the actress, who’s now 37 years old, assumed the character of Penelope Featherington in the popular Netflix series. In this role, she shares intimate, passionate moments with her romantic interest, Colin Bridgerton.

Currently, she has moved into a fresh position within Doctor Who, and will act alongside the latest Time Lord, Ncuti Gatwa, during the upcoming holiday special.

Talking to Radio Times about her hectic year, she commented: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. This year has been the most bustling one I’ve ever experienced.

It appears that during the Bridgerton press tour, we visited a total of eight distinct countries, an experience that was delightful and rewarding, as I am immensely proud of the two exceptional shows we presented.

It’s a wonderful feeling wrapping up the year by enjoying Doctor Who. My family and I are looking forward to spending Christmas together, watching it.

‘Very few things I do are actually family-friendly, so it’s really lovely to have one!’

She mentioned that since her childhood was spent in Ireland where there were just two local channels and no BBC, ‘Doctor Who’ was not part of her regular viewing experience.

When inquired about it, I showed great enthusiasm. However, upon attempting the research, I felt as if I’d stumbled upon an entire cosmos!

Initially, I felt a bit overpowered by the situation. However, I decided that the most suitable approach would be to give an outstanding performance in the hopes of pleasing the fans of The Who.

Last month fans were given a first look at Nicola on set after the Bridgerton star traded Regency-era London for Russell T.Davies and his revived science fiction franchise.

The extent of her role is yet to be disclosed by Davies and his team.

Initially, an image displayed Coughlan adorned in a contemporary red jacket and coordinating hat – quite a contrast to the extravagant ball gowns she donned as high society figure Penelope Featherington on Bridgerton.

At that moment, she expressed her enthusiasm as follows: “I’m thrilled to become a part of the Whoniverse, led by the one-of-a-kind Russell T Davies.

For quite a while, I’ve been a devoted admirer of Ncuti Gatwa. The sheer pleasure of acting alongside him as The Doctor is simply delightful.

Upcoming on the BBC show is the appearance of Coughlan, who has previously taken the lead in the blockbuster movie Barbie. In this film, she portrayed a diplomatic character based on the famous doll, sharing screen time with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

There’s still uncertainty about whether her Doctor Who character, whose name hasn’t been revealed yet, will continue after the Christmas special in December.

According to showrunner Davies, this production was simply outstanding, as Nicola’s radiance illuminated the set and spread happiness all around. It’s like embarking on an unforgettable journey – from Derry, to Bridgerton, and now to the TARDIS.
