Formula 1: Top 2 candidates to supply engines to Cadillac in 2026

As an ardent fan with a rich background in Formula 1 history, I find myself eagerly anticipating Cadillac’s entry into the sport, particularly their decision on an engine supplier. Having witnessed the intricate dance of power unit partnerships over the years, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement as we approach this new era.

From the get-go, General Motors never harbored dreams of crafting our own power engine for Formula 1. Initially, we aimed to use Renault’s power unit, but unfortunately, their F1 engine project is winding down. Even Alpine has plans to migrate to Mercedes engines by 2026, leaving us scrambling for alternatives as a gamer eagerly following these developments.

Consequently, Cadillac must choose an engine manufacturer for their initial years as a customer team in Formula 1. This choice won’t be simple because a significant engine redesign is planned for 2026.

A concern shared among many in the racing circuit is that teams boasting the top engines today might not hold the same advantage in 2026. For instance, Red Bull is considering ending its partnership with Honda and instead developing an in-house engine in conjunction with Ford – a move worthy of close attention.

Only two candidates are viable for Cadillac

2026 seems to be the year when half of the racing grid I’m part of is planning a change in their engine supplier. It definitely adds an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the whole scene!

When it comes to compatible options for Cadillac, Honda and Ferrari appear to be the most fitting choices. Honda is planning to supply a power unit to Aston Martin following its departure from Red Bull, while Ferrari intends to carry on supplying themselves as well as Haas. At the moment, Sauber is powered by Ferrari, but they are slated for takeover by Audi.

As a gamer, I’d say partnering with Red Bull/Ford or Audi for the 2026 season comes with its fair share of uncertainties. That’s because this is their debut year in producing Formula 1 engines. On the flip side, Mercedes has already locked down plans to power themselves and four other teams with their engines, which seems a bit more reliable at this point.

Mario Andretti has affirmed his choice of Ferrari as his preferred team. This decision seems logical considering the team’s advisor was a racer for Ferrari in Formula 1 more than five years back. With his established connections within Ferrari, it is clear that Andretti possesses the clout to negotiate effectively.

However, going with Honda would not be a bad option either. The quality of their engine and reliability has been top-tier. Their engine had a hand in Red Bull’s pushback to the top after they dropped Renault five years ago.

Despite Cadillac making a sound decision, it’s important to note that the upcoming regulatory era is uncharted territory for all teams. Regardless of prior assumptions, this new phase will undoubtedly present significant challenges. As such, Andretti and the Cadillac Formula 1 team should exercise caution in planning their initial approach.
