Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel, 44, reveals scrutiny over her weight as a teenager nearly derailed her career

Most people remember Danielle Fishel as the quirky and lovable Topanga on Boy Meets World, but what many didn’t realize is that she was secretly struggling with issues about her body image during the show’s run.

The host of the Teen Beat podcast, who is 44 years old, recently discussed the intense public attention she faced during the last seasons of the 1990s sitcom she starred in. She told Us Weekly that her self-doubt almost caused her to lose her career.

I always sensed it, even though no one ever came out and said it… those in charge just saw my body as an issue. It’s funny, because I’m feeling much better now, especially after everything I went through with breast cancer. I’ve really turned a corner.

I recall being told around the time of the 1998 prom episode that they didn’t want me to wear anything without sleeves.

Danielle Fishel, only 12 years old when she began playing Topanga on Boy Meets World in 1993, portrayed the beloved character for seven years, until the show ended in 2000. She recently shared that those years were emotionally challenging, particularly because she was also dealing with weight gain during her teenage years.

She confessed she was feeling insecure about her appearance due to weight gain, and the show’s producers even developed a plotline focusing on it.

Fishel admitted she really didn’t want to be on set and felt uncomfortable every day. She explained she felt self-conscious about gaining weight and just wanted to be anywhere else. Looking back, she thinks she was probably difficult to be around.

In a season seven episode called “She’s Having My Baby Back Ribs,” the show’s producers focused attention on Fishel’s weight gain.

In this episode, Topanga and Eric, played by Will Friedle, decide to go on a diet because they’re feeling insecure about gaining weight. Cory, played by Ben Savage, jumps to the wrong conclusion and thinks Topanga might be pregnant, leading to some funny moments.

Reflecting on it now, Fishel admitted that her insecurities made those moments difficult to see.

She explained that she felt conflicted because what she was seeing didn’t align with her emotional response to it.

Honestly, it was a difficult experience. The episodes from season seven were noticeably affected by a lot of insecurity and anxiety about being filmed, and that feeling stuck with me. It’s likely a big reason why I decided not to pursue a career in front of the camera.

You know, I was really moved by what Susan Fishel said when she was asked about going back in time to confront those executives. She didn’t talk about changing what they did, which I thought was amazing. Instead, she said she wouldn’t change a thing about her actions, except to have been kinder to herself and shown herself more acceptance and love. It really resonated with me – it’s a powerful message about self-compassion.

Fishel has directed episodes for several popular TV shows, including Disney Channel’s Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, Raven’s Home, and Coop & Cami Ask the World, as well as ABC’s Shifting Gears.

She later discovered that many actors in Hollywood shared her experiences while being in the public spotlight during the 1990s. It was a particularly difficult decade for women, she explained.

Fishel described a comforting feeling she gets from talking to people, explaining that it reassures her she’s not alone in her experiences. She shared this on her podcast, ‘Pod Meets World,’ which she co-hosts with former co-stars Friedle and Rider Strong, noting that many people who grew up during the same period relate to the same things.

Honestly, hearing Fishel talk about her journey just gets me. She said it’s taken her a whole lifetime to finally feel good in her own head, and it’s so relatable! But she also admitted that even now, those old negative thoughts and habits try to sneak back in, and she has to actively fight them off. It’s so real and inspiring to hear her be so honest about it, you know? Like, it’s not a quick fix, it’s a constant effort, and she’s still working on it, which makes me root for her even more!

For Fishel, appearing on Dancing with the Stars in the fall of 2025 with Pasha Pashkov was a particularly meaningful moment, coming after a difficult year spent undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Cailey Fishel, who shares two sons with her husband, producer Jensen Karp, recently announced some upcoming projects. One of these is a new podcast called Teen Beat, which premiered on January 7th.
