Animorphs TV Show Announced for Disney+, Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler Involved

An Animorphs TV show that is being made for Disney+ is in the works.

Animorphs is a well-known science fiction book series for young adults, created by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. Published by Scholastic between 1996 and 2001, the series consists of 54 novels and 10 additional books. The story follows a group of characters who can shapeshift into any animal they happen to touch.

The Animorphs series is probably most famous for its eye-catching book covers, which showed kids transforming into animals in strange and unusual ways.

What do we know about the Animorphs Disney+ TV show?

According to Variety, Disney+ is starting development on a TV series based on Animorphs. Bayan Wolcott will write and executive produce the show, and Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media will also be executive producers.

Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman are executive producers for Scholastic on the show, which is produced by 20th Television. Simone Harris and Dezi Gallegos are overseeing the production.

The show centers around a group of high school students who discover a dangerous secret hidden beneath the surface of their normal lives, as they also navigate the usual teenage challenges of dating, curfews, and school drama.

According to Deadline, the book series centers around five teenagers – Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias – who uncover a secret invasion of Earth by parasitic aliens called Yeerks. They encounter a dying alien from the Andalite race, who have been battling the Yeerks throughout the galaxy. This Andalite gives the teens the power to transform into any animal they touch, using the animal’s DNA. They then use this ability to secretly fight back against the Yeerks and protect the world, later joined by another Andalite named Ax who is stranded on Earth.

You know, there was actually a live-action Animorphs show back in ’98 on Nickelodeon. I remember watching it when it first came out – it lasted for two seasons, but I always wished it had gone on longer!
