Megan Barton Hanson reveals her rape and ‘stealthing’ trauma at the hands of abusive ex who attacked her after she had an abortion: ‘I feared he was going to kill me’
As I delve into this heart-wrenching narrative, I can’t help but be moved by Megan’s resilience and strength. Her journey, marred by the horrific experience of stealth rape and domestic abuse, is a testament to her indomitable spirit.
She’s one of the wealthiest influencers in the country, thought to be worth more than £2million.
However, Megan Barton Hanson, who became well-known as a Love Island contestant in 2018, has shared that it took her 11 years to understand that she had been a victim of a deeply unpleasant and personal crime.
She claims that she fell head over heels for a new boyfriend at the tender age of 19, who wasn’t very experienced with intimacy. In the heat of their sexual encounter, she alleges that he discarded the condom without her permission.
Just two weeks past, it became clear to her that the action known as “stealthing” is classified as rape and can result in imprisonment.
The shocking revelation that she was a victim of a severe sexual assault emerged during her conversation on a podcast with renowned relationship advisor Paul Carrick Brunson. As the truth settled in, she described her entire body feeling ablaze as she acknowledged she had been raped unknowingly.
During a special conversation with TopMob, Megan, aged 30 and previously known from Love Island, revealed that she first heard about it when chatting with Paul on his podcast. As we delved into her personal history, a subject I hadn’t discussed openly before, I mentioned this particular matter.
‘He said “You are aware that this is rape” and I was like, “No it’s not.”
I wasn’t sure if I was deceiving myself, as I wholeheartedly agreed to engage in sexual activities with my partner, who I’ve been dating for half a year.
Later on, Paul replied, “Indeed, but it wasn’t your agreement for him to take off the condom without your awareness.
For Megan, who is well-known among her fans for her candidness about relationship issues, it was a nerve-wracking moment.
She appears troubled as she shares: ‘It was quite overwhelming. I felt sorrowful for my past self. At the time, I was merely an infant, and later when I turned 19, he was only my second sexual encounter. My innocence was so profound back then. I yearned to comfort my younger self.’
‘My whole body was burning, the back of my neck was hot, I was like “no way”.
What makes the situation even more difficult is that, without revealing his identity, her boyfriend carelessly impregnated her by not using a condom.
‘It was only the morning sickness that made me realise,’ she tells me now.
Megan and her partner decided to end the pregnancy, but on their journey home from the clinic, her ex erupted in a fit of violent anger.
She recalled: ‘He was like, “You’re disgusting. You just killed our baby.”
Megan, identifying herself as a feminist, has chosen to voice her thoughts now, aiming to enlighten younger females regarding potential misuses of this specific contraceptive method and the possible consequences that may ensue.
She points out that it’s not just about sexual relations, but also about protecting yourself from sexually transmitted infections. Having sex implies consenting to use protection. It’s hard to believe that someone wouldn’t realize this, given how intimate and significant the act is.
‘Everyone is aware that it’s immoral but people don’t know it’s a crime.’
2013 marked a thrilling phase in Megan’s life. Fresh from securing a position at a law firm and entering into a new relationship, she was brimming with excitement.
But a few months into their relationship, she felt he’d started to become controlling.
Bickering over what to watch on television one night, she says he hit her with the remote control.
At the beginning, I didn’t feel afraid of him, but later on, when he struck me using that control, it became a warning sign for me, she explained.
During a different time, while visiting London, Megan recounts an incident where he raised his voice at her and displayed violent behavior.
‘He became overly touchy with me, then pinned me against a wall by my throat, attempting to choke me. In response, I asserted myself and warned him that if he behaved like this again, I’d end our relationship.’
A few months later, she was astonished to discover she was pregnant and was still residing with her parents. Realizing her youthfulness, she opted to schedule an abortion as a precaution.
Before the procedure, she claims her partner attempted to discourage her by gently patting her belly, which she interprets as an unconscious effort on his part to persuade her against it.
The day of the termination turned into what was by far the most terrifying of Megan’s life.
Initially, she consumed a pill designed to ready the body for subsequent medication doses. However, just ten minutes into their ride home, which was being chauffeured by her boyfriend’s mom, he suddenly erupted in anger.
‘It was as if a switch flicked. He said, “I can’t believe you did it.”
Later, he instructed both me and his mother to exit the premises. At that moment, I was terrified he might harm me. The events were overwhelming, as I had already undergone a termination, which was more than enough for me to handle. In a daze, I just stood there, trying to soothe him down.
Subsequently, she asserts that he brutally assaulted her by hitting her and using a seatbelt to strangle her.
She claims he additionally nipped at her nose and started recording her on his phone, instructing her to inform the camera that they had just terminated their baby.
Megan eventually managed to get back to her parents’ house.
Upon arriving home, Megan quickly secured the doors, but she was trembling with fear, absolutely terrified, finding it difficult to catch her breath.
After that, she mentioned that her partner showed up with a crowbar, attempting to force open the front door. Megan grabbed her mom’s car keys, and she along with her mother quickly left in a car, dialing the emergency number to contact the police.
The man was later charged and convicted of two counts of battering, ABH and criminal damage. He was sentenced to a month-and-a-half in prison.
Megan admits that she has had ‘hours’ of therapy which has cost her ‘a lot of money.’
She admits to exploring a variety of approaches, and one of them is cognitive-behavioral therapy, which she found beneficial because it provides her with tools to use when she’s feeling overwhelmed or experiencing negative thoughts.
‘I still have it on and off. I haven’t had it for five or six months but I like to check in.’
Megan has chosen to voice her concerns about the issue of stealthing, urging the government to incorporate education on this topic in their school curriculum for younger generations.
1) Megan is concerned that when women report being victims of stealthing, their accounts may not be taken seriously due to lack of concrete evidence. She urges women to stay alert and keep the term in their thoughts as a reminder.
Meanwhile, the star credits yoga and meditation as being important to regaining her equilibrium.
Time has passed, and she’s found contentment. In fact, she’s determined not to let that past event dictate the course of her future.
She mentioned that she makes an effort not to get overly attached to labels, as it’s a common human tendency to categorize others, particularly women.
‘You’re either an academic woman, a sexy woman or a funny woman. And rape can be a label too.
‘But I have worked through my trauma. It is my experience and I have dealt with it.’
