Star Trek: Discovery needs a follow-up movie set before the coda
As someone who has spent countless hours navigating the vast expanse of the Star Trek universe, I find myself torn between loyalty and logic regarding the potential for a follow-up movie to Star Trek: Discovery. On one hand, the series ended abruptly, leaving many loose ends dangling like a Klingon bat’leth in a windstorm. On the other, I appreciate the creative freedom that comes with concluding a story without the pressure of a traditional series finale.
From my perspective as an ardent fan, I can’t help but feel that a follow-up movie for Star Trek: Discovery would be fitting, given the abrupt ending it received. The hurriedly filmed coda at the end felt a bit too tidy, and there seemed to be a noticeable gap between the true ending of “Life, Itself” and the added conclusion. I believe there’s room for more exploration in the Discovery universe.
In most Star Trek shows apart from Star Trek: Prodigy, the actors were aware that the series was either concluding or getting cancelled, allowing them time to plan a fitting finale. However, this wasn’t the case for Star Trek: The Original Series, although the cast understood the show wouldn’t be renewed due to poor ratings and its struggle to stay afloat. Nevertheless, it led to six subsequent films that provided a more satisfactory conclusion. Similarly, the ending of Star Trek: Enterprise didn’t meet everyone’s expectations, but once again, the cast was aware that the series had been cancelled.
Star Trek: Prodigy unexpectedly ended after its first season, but fortunately, season two found a platform on Netflix. However, should Netflix not renew it, this second season could effectively function as a series conclusion – which was the intention of creators Kevin and Dan Hageman.
The show “Discovery” had a sort of conclusion, yet it wasn’t a farewell where the crew realized it was their last journey together on the Discovery. While we know what became of Saru and Captain Burnham rising to the rank of admiral, the fate of the rest of the crew remains somewhat uncertain within the series. We do learn, however, that Tilly continued her role as a teacher at the Academy at the end, and she’s expected to reappear in future episodes centered around Starfleet Academy.
While Discovery boasted a rich cast, not all characters had a proper conclusion. Given that other Star Trek series have wrapped up with satisfying finales, it seems only just for Discovery to receive the same closure, especially considering it’s a streaming channel production. Fans who have grown attached to this series yearn to witness the crew bidding farewell and learning about each character’s subsequent journey. We desire to hear their goodbyes and understand how they move forward without Discovery.
