28 Years Later poster depicts the Rage Virus’ devastating body count
As a hardcore survivor of numerous gaming apocalypses and zombie outbreaks, I can confidently say that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about the return of the 28 Days Later universe. I’ve battled hordes of the infected, scavenged for resources, and rebuilt societies from the ground up in countless games. But nothing compares to the raw, terrifying brilliance of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s original masterpiece.
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have teamed up again for “28 Years Later,” a follow-up to the cherished horror series initiated by the critically acclaimed “28 Days Later” from 2002. This highly-anticipated new trilogy, taking place in the same universe, has received much applause due to its reputation as one of the greatest outbreak films ever produced.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that “28 Years Later” isn’t just a standalone film, but the beginning of a trilogy! The sequel, titled “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple“, will be directed by Nia DaCosta. Remarkably, both films were filmed consecutively, with the first one set for a theatrical release in June 2025.
Last Friday, Sony revealed the initial promotional poster for the movie. The image displays a cluster of crimson skulls, symbolizing the numerous lives claimed by the Rage Virus, arranged to form a biohazard emblem. Accompanying this is the tagline: “Time has not mended any wounds.
The movie scheduled for release in 2025 carries on from where “28 Weeks Later” left off. Although Boyle and Garland didn’t write or direct the 2007 sequel, they did serve as executive producers. Despite the passage of time, the Rage Virus remains unchecked and poses a persistent threat to survivors.
It’s official that Cillian Murphy will be back to play Jim again, but specifics about his involvement are being withheld. In addition to Murphy, the cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.
In the wake of numerous pandemic-themed horror films, particularly given our post-COVID context, it’s significant to acknowledge that the team of Boyle and Garland revolutionized this genre back in 2002. The influence of 28 Days Later is palpable in every zombie or virus-related film produced since, and there’s a great deal of anticipation for their upcoming trilogy.
28 Years Later will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
