Star Trek gets nominated for awards by the only group that matters

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast, it’s always a rollercoaster of emotions when award season comes around. The joy and anticipation of seeing our beloved franchise recognized, followed by the disappointment when the Academy overlooks us yet again. It feels like we’re in a parallel universe where the Klingons are the ones winning Best Picture!

As a devoted Star Trek fan, I can’t help but notice how often this classic series gets sidelined during award season. It’s a common occurrence indeed. For instance, in 1997, the critically acclaimed Star Trek: First Contact was overshadowed by The English Patient, which took home the Best Picture award. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure The English Patient is a fantastic film, but let’s be honest, how many of us are die-hard fans who have seen it? And yet, it won the top prize. Isn’t that something worth considering?

What’s up with that?

Despite some playful skepticism, it’s worth noting that Star Trek productions haven’t often received accolades at either the Academy Awards or the Emmys. The first film in the series to receive a nod was “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” in 1980, earning multiple nominations. However, it only won once, in 2010 for “Star Trek 2009”, specifically for Best Makeup. At the Emmys, they’ve had more success, winning 19 times out of a total of 59 nominations.

Star Trek has received some recognition from mainstream sources, but it is the Saturn Awards that have consistently acknowledged and validated the franchise among its dedicated fans. In fact, with the exception of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, every Star Trek movie has either been nominated or won a Saturn Award.

In terms of television recognition, Star Trek: The Next Generation alone garnered 11 nominations and took home six awards. Across all movies and series, Star Trek accumulated more than a hundred nominations from the Saturn Awards, with over 40 wins in total.

At the Saturn Awards, Star Trek has consistently received more recognition for its achievements compared to others in the field. Consequently, it’s no wonder that Star Trek is yet again receiving nominations for several awards.

In the year 2024, both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Discovery were recognized with nominations for prestigious awards. Specifically, their final seasons earned these recognitions. Discovery secured a nomination for the category of Best Science Fiction Television Series, while Lower Decks was contending for the title of Best Animated Television Series.

Although it’s wonderful that both series were nominated, it’s worth noting that this is the smallest number of nominations for Star Trek in the Saturn Awards during the New Trek period.
