Maul Is “A Devil” On New Star Wars Character’s Shoulder, Tease 2026 Show Creators

I’m so excited! The team making the new Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord animated series just gave us a first look at a completely new character for the Star Wars universe. It’s really building the hype!

Maul – Shadow Lord is a continuation of the popular animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which originally aired on Cartoon Network in 2008 and later moved to Netflix. The series concluded with a final season on Disney+ in 2020. Shadow Lord picks up after the events of Clone Wars and focuses on Maul, a character first seen in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m getting so excited for Maul – Shadow Lord to hit Disney+ on April 6th! I just read a great interview with the executive producers, Matt Michnovetz and Brad Rau, over at ScreenRant. They’re sharing some new details about a character we’ll be meeting in the series – Devon Izara – and it’s really building my anticipation.

Michnovetz really enjoyed developing the character and its history, but it was also difficult. He and his team wanted to make sure the character felt real and had a personality that would keep viewers engaged over time.

Devon is a young character who’s faced a lot of hardship. She’s spent most of her life preparing for a future she imagined, but that future was unexpectedly taken away from her.

Devon used to have a strong, ethical mentor who always guided her to do the right thing. Now, she’s facing a difficult situation where she’s struggling with conflicting feelings. It’s like she has a voice inside pushing her towards the dark side, towards becoming a Sith. Rau jokingly pointed out that this inner voice, this temptation, reminded him of Darth Maul – someone truly evil and dangerous.

Creating this character was a really enjoyable process. She’s a young woman facing hardship, having dedicated years to training for a future that unexpectedly fell apart. Now, she’s guided by her wise and steady mentor, but she’s also struggling with intense emotions and a conflicting inner voice that pushes her towards difficult choices. It was a wonderfully complex and challenging character to develop.

Brad Rau: “He has horns. He has horns.”

Gideon Adlon, known for her roles in projects like Blockers, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, The Society, and The Thing About Pam, provides the voice for Devon. She stars alongside Sam Witwer, Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, Dennis Haysbert, Chris Diamantopoulos, Charlie Bushnell, Vanessa Marshall, David W. Collins, A. J. LoCascio, and Steve Blum in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.

Sam Witwer is once again playing Darth Maul, a character he originally voiced in The Clone Wars and later appeared in Star Wars Rebels and Solo: A Star Wars Story. In the new series, Maul is looking for someone to train as his apprentice, and he’s chosen Devon. This echoes a pattern fans of the Star Wars universe will remember, as seeking out apprentices has become a key part of Darth Maul’s story.

With the end of the Clone Wars and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Maul is trying to rebuild the group that once gave him great power.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres Monday, April 6, on Disney+.
