Ellen DeGeneres mercilessly mocked over ‘I’m kind’ skincare line ad: ‘But her staff said the opposite’
As a dedicated follower of entertainment news, I’ve witnessed Ellen DeGeneres’ rise to fame and the subsequent fallout from the toxic workplace scandal that rocked her daytime talk show. Having lived through the Golden Age of sitcoms, I can’t help but draw parallels between Ellen’s journey and the classic TV trope: “It’s a Wonderful Life.
Four years following the controversy surrounding her workplace, Ellen DeGeneres has faced harsh criticism for her Kind Science skincare product advertisement.
Previously known as the talk show host, now 66 years old, who concluded her daytime program in 2022 due to accusations of bullying, racism, and sexual impropriety, was featured in an advertisement alongside her spouse, Portia de Rossi, age 51. In this commercial, she passionately discussed the rejuvenating properties of her skincare line.
Despite the fact that DeGeneres had always wrapped up her shows with a call for viewers to ‘treat each other kindly’, she faced criticism from social media users who alleged that she wasn’t extending that kindness to her own staff.
One follower wrote: ‘Yeah.. kind of a jerk’ while a second typed: ‘But her staff said the opposite.’
Others penned: ‘The rumors have floated around forever how rude she is, how she treated people.’
‘Additionally, I hold the title of queen.’ (Paraphrase for ‘Yeah and I’m the queen’)
‘Yeah kind…of a nasty human being.’
The video was published later, after Ellen DeGeneres had relocated to the United Kingdom following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election.
Ellen DeGeneres’ controversy began when comedian Kevin T. Porter posted a tweet in March 2020, requesting people to share their “craziest stories about Ellen being unkind.” This tweet gathered approximately 2,600 responses.
Approximately four months after the event, BuzzFeed News released a detailed report, which included testimonies from one current employee and 10 former staff members of the Louisiana-born comedian’s previous daytime talk show. They accused the show of incidents involving racism, workplace mistreatment, and sexual misconduct.
By August 2020, WarnerMedia conducted an internal inquiry, Ellen DeGeneres publicly apologized to her 255 staff members, and executive producers Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman, and Jonathan Norman were let go from the program.
Ellen DeGeneres aired her last episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on May 26, 2022, marking the end of an 19-season run. She had previously expressed her regrets and apologized to her viewers during one of the broadcasts.
Later on, she labeled it as a ‘systematic assault motivated by misogyny’, and since the final episode of the talk show aired on May 26, 2022, she has generally avoided the limelight.
Ellen DeGeneres broke new ground when she publicly identified as gay during her time as the main character in the sitcom “Ellen,” which aired from 1996 to 1998, making her the first lead actor in a series to do so.
Following the conclusion of that show, the actress sporadically appeared as a guest on programs like Will & Grace and EdTV.
2003 saw a resurgence in Ellen DeGeneres’ stardom, largely due to her voice role as Dory in the successful Disney/Pixar animated film Finding Nemo. Incidentally, this was also the year when she debuted The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
This year, she made a comeback to comedy through the Netflix special “For Your Approval,” where she poked fun at her self-imposed seclusion in Hollywood.
