The WWE main roster women's divisions need more in-depth stories

As a lifelong wrestling enthusiast with over three decades of watching the squared circle, I can confidently say that WWE is at a crossroads. The current state of the women’s division has left me longing for the days of Trish Stratus and Lita.

The latest episode of WWE Monday Night Raw left fans talking throughout the week. What was going to happen with The New Day? Is Seth Rollins going to turn heel as everyone slowly sides with Roman Reigns? There are two massive storylines heading up the Monday show, but this also revealed a glaring hole in the company’s booking. The women’s division needs an angle that carries the weight of those seen in the men’s division, and it just doesn’t seem possible with how things are currently handled.

Currently, there are two leading storylines unfolding within the women’s category, one on SmackDown and another on Raw. Liv Morgan and Rhea Ripley’s feud has been a significant focus, initially centered around Dominik Mysterio and later escalating towards the Women’s World Championship. Meanwhile, on SmackDown, Nia Jax is grappling with growing mistrust towards Tiffany Stratton. This plot is expected to elevate Stratton into one of the most beloved figures in the women’s division today.

Despite both angles receiving significant TV screen-time, it’s regrettable that neither has managed to generate the same level of audience engagement as the storylines involving the two men from Monday Night Raw. Fans are starting to lose patience with Ripley being portrayed as an overpowering figure, and Stratton’s frequent Money in the Bank hints are becoming repetitive. There was a chance to create an engaging narrative between Morgan and Ripley due to their extensive history, and a similar opportunity could have arisen had Raquel Rodriguez been reintroduced, but once again, WWE resorted to using the same worn-out plot devices when devising women’s storylines.

As a gamer, I’ve been noticing an intriguing twist in the storylines on Monday Night Raw and SmackDown: both the angles (stories) being developed don’t revolve around the main titles. Instead, these champions are off in their own universes, giving room for these stories to gain traction behind potential future title contenders. However, it’s a different story in the women’s division. With the introduction of the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship and Women’s United States Championship, there’s a sense of uncertainty about whether this will lead to more balanced booking for all women wrestlers.

Examining the lineup, there are numerous skilled individuals who could spin captivating tales, provided they’re given the chance. WWE no longer has to rely on the Four Horsewomen exclusively; instead, it boasts a roster as rich and diverse as today’s. There are numerous personalities ripe for exploration, and potential storylines to weave among them if the effort is invested in their development.

WWE demonstrates its ability to create compelling narratives that engage fans. Now, it’s high time to apply the same thoughtfulness to the storylines driving the women’s division on the main roster as well.
