NASCAR development leaves one charter car without a driver
As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with over three decades of cheering for my favorite teams under my belt, this latest development has left me both bewildered and intrigued. The ongoing antitrust litigation between NASCAR and 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports is certainly a plot twist that would make even the best racing dramas blush.
23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports have not been granted recognition by NASCAR regarding the acquisition of charters from Stewart-Haas Racing, despite both teams aiming to increase their participation in the 2025 Cup Series to three cars.
23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports have decided not to commit to the latest NASCAR contract, an action that has sparked a prolonged antitrust lawsuit between these teams and the governing body due to this disagreement.
NASCAR plans to progress with 32 charters in 2025 instead of the regular 36, considering that all teams were two-car teams at the time. However, there are currently two additional Stewart-Haas Racing charters not accounted for, suggesting that the sport might be gearing up for a season with only 30 teams.
23XI Racing has officially secured Riley Herbst as its third racer, joining forces with Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace on the team.
While Front Row Motorsports officially has an open seat alongside Todd Gilliland and Noah Gragson, who was previously with Stewart-Haas Racing, it appears that this seat is all but confirmed for former Truck Series champion Zane Smith. This recent news suggests that only a single chartered seat remains unassigned for the 2025 season, despite both teams’ intentions to field three cars each.
That seat is Rick Ware Racing’s No. 51 Ford.
For the 2025 season, Rick Ware’s racing team will be operating with only one car, as they have decided to rent out one of their two charters to RFK Racing. In anticipation, RFK Racing plans to increase their own fleet from two to three vehicles for the same season.
Initially slated to rejoin Rick Ware Racing in 2025, Justin Haley ended up teaming up with Spire Motorsports instead due to a mid-season driver change. Corey LaJoie, who had been with Spire, stepped into the No. 51 Ford for the rest of the 2024 season following this swap.
For the year 2024, the No. 15 Ford car was jointly driven by Kaz Grala, Cody Ware, and Riley Herbst. However, it’s not anticipated that this vehicle will participate in the non-chartered category for the 2025 season.
Rick Ware Racing has often fielded at least one of their permanent vehicles as a shared entry. With only one permanent entry left now, it will be intriguing to observe if they can consistently assign a sole driver moving forward. Meanwhile, the 29 other charter cars, along with the six cars from both 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, are all slated to have single drivers driving them full-time next season.
The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season will kick off two weeks before its main event, the 67th annual Daytona 500, which is set for February 16 at Daytona International Speedway. However, the racing action will actually start with the Busch Light Clash preseason exhibition race on Sunday, February 2, at Bowman Gray Stadium.
