Star Trek license plates are costing one New Yorker a fortune
As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Beda Koorey. Here is a woman who, at 76, has been living her love for the franchise for decades, and now she’s being punished for it.
Star Trek license plates are items typically displayed on walls or collectors’ shelves by enthusiastic fans. However, some devoted followers have opted to use them more unconventionally, even illegally, on their vehicles. Unfortunately for one Star Trek fanatic, this choice has led to a significant amount of fines totaling tens of thousands of dollars.
76-year-old New York resident, Betty Coorey, formerly owned a car with a license plate NCC 1701, symbolizing her passion for Star Trek. However, due to visual issues, she had to give up driving four years ago, which meant surrendering her license plate and selling her vehicle. Yet, surprisingly, she’s been receiving traffic tickets from various locations across the nation, as reported by KSL.com.
Due to the misuse of these decorative license plates, Koorey has been receiving citations for traffic violations such as running red lights, speeding, parking infractions, and school zone offenses, as she shared with the news station. Regrettably, it seems that Koorey isn’t receiving assistance from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles since their response indicated that misuse of novelty plates on the roads is a matter for law enforcement, and there’s no connection in their system between Koorey and her previous license plate.
As a supporter, I find myself deeply troubled by Koorey’s situation. Despite living on a fixed income, she’s been piling up fines, and just lately, she even received an unexpected call from an Ohio police chief due to the plates being linked to a robbery. Whether it’s EZ pass tolls or other driving offenses, Koorey seems to be under a constant barrage of fines that aren’t her fault.
“It all comes back to me, so the whole country has my name and address for tickets I don’t even owe,” she said. This certainly isn’t fair to Koorey. So, Star Trek fans, help us spread the word to Trekkies and remind them that the $15.00 Star Trek: Enterprise license tag they bought online isn’t legal and is costing one fan a bundle.
