Black Doves episode 1 recap: ‘To Love Then’

As a seasoned viewer of suspenseful dramas and thrillers, I must say that “Black Doves” is a captivating addition to my binge-watching list! The intricate plot twists, coupled with the stellar performances from the ensemble cast, have left me on the edge of my seat.

Get ready for the long-awaited Christmas espionage series! “Black Doves,” a captivating creation by Joe Barton, is now streaming on Netflix. This exciting new show is an excellent choice for your December 2024 viewing schedule!

As a devoted admirer, I’d put it like this: “In ‘Black Doves’, my favorite series, the very first episode, titled ‘To Love Then,’ opens in a cozy British pub during the festive season of Christmas. On the TV screen, a somber news broadcast fills the air, announcing the tragic demise of the esteemed Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In the outdoors, Jason (Andrew Koji) strolls along the thoroughfares of London. Over the phone, he alerts Maggie and Philip that he suspects someone is tailing him. Tragically, during this call, both Maggie and Philip fall victims to unidentified assassins.

Jason takes a seat on a bench and decides to place a call he feels he shouldn’t, yet he wishes to convey a message. However, his attempt to speak is cut short as he’s struck in the chest and succumbs to his injuries.

Next, we meet Sam (Ben Whishaw), an assassin who is summoned back to the UK for a new job.

Subsequently, there’s a change in mood as we introduce the Webb family. Helen, played by Keira Knightley, is married to Wallace, who serves as the British Minister of Defense, and they have two children. Wallace casually mentions that the Chinese Ambassador to the UK passed away from an overdose, but his daughter remains unaccounted for.

The family quickly departs their home for a charity gathering, organized by Helen. Following a brief address, Helen engages in a conversation with an enigmatic lady, Reed (Sarah Lancashire). Reed is a prominent figure within the Black Doves organization, and she confides in Helen that her partner, Jason Davies, met his demise the previous night. He is the individual sitting on the bench.

I’ve been keeping a secret for the past three months – I’ve been in love with Jason and we’ve been seeing each other. But then, Reed drops a bombshell: Jason, Maggie, and Philip have all met an untimely end, and their deaths seem to be linked somehow. Reed starts grilling me about Jason, his activities, how deep our relationship went, and so on. I can feel the tension rising as I defend myself. Reed then advises me to stay low-key for a while. As a gamer, it feels like I’ve just entered a new level of this real-life mystery game.

Based on our discussion, it seems clear that Helen may be a member of the secret organization known as the Black Doves. It appears that she was dissatisfied with her life and marriage, intending to depart from it for a new life with Jason, who does not seem to be associated with espionage. However, this decision has landed Helen in a precarious situation with the Black Doves. Moreover, there are hints that she may have connections to three individuals who met with an unexpected and unexplained demise. Reed, it seems, has informed Helen that the Black Doves are unaware of why these people were killed.

Later on, Reed has a meeting with Sam, an individual with a past connection to Helen. Reed requests Sam to ensure that no harm comes to Helen, who holds significant influence within the British government. Given her extensive network, she’s not someone who can be easily extricated. Essentially, Sam is tasked with safeguarding Helen and her family.

Sam drinks at the hotel bar and hooks up with a stranger.

In the Webb household, Wallace shares with me that the Chinese suspect the Ambassador was assassinated rather than it being an overdose incident. We’re skeptical of this theory, so work calls him in. Seizing the moment, Helen decides to slip away, but first, she unwraps her Christmas present from Jason. It turns out to be a necklace or bracelet, no hidden messages within.

Helen drops by Jason’s residence, and it’s the property manager who unlocks the door. As Helen scours the apartment for an item, she encounters Jason’s last voicemail, left before his untimely demise. Memories of their past resurface as she sifts through his belongings, reflecting on their relationship.

After hitting his vape, Helen notices the vapor flows to a picture. Very interesting.

At the same time, Helen remains at the location, two individuals who turn out to be assassins unexpectedly show up at the landlord’s residence. Upon discovering a woman residing upstairs in Jason’s apartment, these assassins end up murdering the landlord. The entire ordeal is heard by Helen, prompting her to text Sam about her situation and location, as she has been compromised.

Prior to Sam’s arrival, Helen manages to fend off the would-be assassins, fatally shooting one with a shotgun in self-defense. The incident leaves her drenched in the attacker’s blood. They escape, but not before Helen snatches a box from Jason’s apartment safe on their way out, mere moments before the police show up.

Once they part ways, Helen and Sam reconnect. It’s been quite a while since they last met in person. Sam moved away from London in a rush, but he’s back now. Helen requests two favors from Sam: first, to help keep her alive until she can exact her vengeance on the one who murdered Jason; second, to ensure the safety of her family. Sam responds that he will “give it my best shot.

On that particular evening, I delved into Jason’s hard drive, reminiscing our shared past as I scrolled through our heartfelt messages. The depth of our bond was undeniably evident, suggesting a genuine, heartfelt connection between us.

Helen discovers as well that Jason made numerous phone calls prior to his death. Furthermore, she uncovers a message from Philip that hints at the existence of recordings related to “Sy” regarding some event.

In the meantime, Sam heads to town to grab some weapons. He’s on a mission to uncover who murdered Jason and why, but he unexpectedly runs into an old acquaintance who invites him for dinner instead. Later, he investigates the spot where the sniper had taken aim at Jason. There, on the balcony of what seems like an apartment or office building, he discovers a bullet casing. He hands it over to someone within the Black Doves for ballistics analysis, and the results come back swiftly. It appears that Sam is quite skilled in his line of work.

Over dinner, we discover that Sam was involved with an individual named Michael. In a rush, Sam abruptly left without saying a word. Not ideal, Sam. However, it’s apparent that there’s been some trouble at Sam’s workplace. Michael now has a new partner and a child, which seems to upset Sam, though he attempts to conceal his feelings.

Afterward, Helen encounters Reed at a movie theater. Reed suggests that Sam should manage the situation, while Helen stays out of sight, yet this approach doesn’t suit Helen’s character.

Sam learns that Elmore Fitch, the individual responsible for Jason’s death, has been unmasked. He abruptly leaves dinner and obtains an address. Upon arriving, Helen encounters him outside, but before they can continue their conversation, Sam discloses another startling detail: Jason was in contact with Kai-Ming Chen, the Chinese Ambassador’s daughter who is now reported missing. So, one must wonder, what was Jason up to? Could he have been a spy as well? Helen is eager to uncover the truth behind this mystery.

The first episode of “Black Doves” concludes there! After the death of her lover, Jason, at the hands of Elmore Fitch, Helen is gearing up for retaliation instead of keeping a low profile as Reed had advised. It seems like a risky move, but perhaps it will pay off in the second episode of “Black Doves”.
