Skeleton Crew: Jon Watts explains premiere’s Star Wars Holiday Special reference
As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has seen the highs and lows of this galaxy far, far away, I must say that Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have truly outdone themselves with the first episode of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” The homage to the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special was a delightful surprise, and the recreation of the circus hologram scene was nothing short of genius.
In the first installment of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” titled “This Could Be A Real Adventure,” there were many tributes to the roots of the series, but one that was especially noticeable for those familiar with events on November 17, 1978. If the thought of The Star Wars Holiday Special hadn’t crossed your mind yet, it does now.
As a devoted gamer, I found myself captivated by a specific scene from an iconic TV special while we were developing the show. I couldn’t shake off my fascination with it, and I knew I had to pay tribute to its impact — by meticulously recreating that very scene in our production.
He mentioned that he’s been captivated since day one by the peculiar circus hologram,” he stated, alluding to the scene where Lumpy, Chewbacca’s son as depicted in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, watches an awe-inspiring yet odd performance.
Here, we intentionally employ the term “recreating.” As Watts explains, the initial capture of the hologram was impractical due to several factors. Firstly, they required recording it from various perspectives. Secondly, the initial video didn’t have sufficient clarity to be utilizable.
In case you didn’t notice, a fleeting glimpse of a circus hologram appears in the initial episode of “Skeleton Crew”. Whether you recognized the reference or not, it’s an intriguing nod to a debatable aspect of Star Wars lore that has sparked controversy. However, let’s hope that this part of history doesn’t repeat itself in its entirety.
As a big fan of The Holiday Special, I’m eagerly waiting for another episode featuring Peli Motto!
It’s quite possible that Watts and co-creator Christopher Ford have hidden numerous Easter Eggs throughout what remains of the series. From the very beginning, Star Wars has been rich with deep and meaningful references to its roots. We are incredibly fortunate to be Star Wars fans during an era when those who cherish this universe are now given the opportunity to create within George Lucas’s imaginative playground. As for what the future holds, it is often shrouded in mystery, but then again, isn’t that just how a wise Jedi Master might see it?
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is now streaming exclusively on Disney+.
