Melanie Sykes breaks her silence over Gregg Wallace row after she revealed MasterChef star was the reason she quit her TV career

As a long-time follower of the television scene and having worked with various personalities throughout my career, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent events surrounding Gregg Wallace and the allegations against him.

Melanie Sykes has posted a cryptic Instagram post amid the ongoing Gregg Wallace row.

In 2021, she mentioned that her interaction with Gregg on the BBC program led her to reconsider and ultimately step away from her TV profession.

On Wednesday, Mel, aged 54, posted a poignant quote on her Instagram Stories: “It seems one reason why some people hold onto their hatreds so tenaciously is because they feel that, when the hatred fades away, they’ll have to confront the pain instead.

In her book “Illuminated,” published last year, she discussed Gregg. Lately, she has delved deeper into those comments in a YouTube video she uploaded.

Mel asserted that on MasterChef, Gregg addressed her by questioning whether models consume food. She considered this behavior as being unprofessional and tinged with a lack of knowledge and disregard.

Additionally, she mentioned that the former grocer-turned-broadcaster, who is 60 years old, spoke with such an authoritative tone during the program that it prompted her to consider exiting the broadcast.

And Gregg apparently told her that appearing on his show would do a lot for her career prospects.

She explained: “Since I wasn’t sure how to respond, I simply smiled and agreed, yet inside my head, I was actually contemplating, ‘Indeed, you’ve provided the final push for me to conclude my TV profession forever.’

Melanie said she made an informal complaint against Wallace, and claimed she found conduct on the MasterChef set ‘jaw-dropping’.

The presenter, aged 60, is currently under scrutiny due to allegations made by at least 13 women. These accusations range from wandering around the set semi-nude with a sock covering one area, telling inappropriate jokes, and even touching crew members in an unwanted manner.

On Wednesday, Jeremy Vine and Dawn Neesom expressed their bewilderment about Melanie’s criticisms towards Gregg. In simpler terms, they were taken aback and didn’t fully understand the reasons behind her complaints against him.

During the broadcast of The Jeremy Vine Show on a Wednesday, Jeremy Vine and panelist Dawn Neesom expressed confusion as to why a particular remark directed at her could have been so offensive that it would drive her to consider leaving her television profession.

Jeremy expressed to me that he was slightly puzzled regarding Mel, whom he appreciates, and the only scenario he could decipher from their interaction was that Mel may have made an inappropriate comment about how much models typically consume.

Journalist Dawn expressed her dismay over certain accusations being “shocking” at the very least, hinting at inappropriate sexual behavior. When asked about Mel Sykes’ diet during her modeling days, Dawn apologized if anyone found this question offensive. She clarified that she likes Mel personally and wasn’t trying to criticize her, but was instead drawing attention to the fact that some of the allegations seem less serious in comparison.

Jeremy commented, “So, did she stop watching TV altogether because of something else not mentioned?

Dawn responded: “From what we understand, she was questioned about her diet since she’s a model. A question like that is something I’d expect to ask a model if I were being truthful.

Melanie gained significant recognition for her appearance in the Boddingtons commercial during the 1990s, and she also became well-known for co-hosting Today with Des and Mel in the early 2000s.

In her book, Melanie stated that the MasterChef competition remained surprising, and certain inappropriate conduct backstage left her speechless.

In a recent YouTube video, she expressed that every time Gregg visited the desk, she felt uncomfortable having him nearby as it’s about maintaining harmonious vibrations and energy levels.

After wrapping up the series, Melanie asserted that she had a short chat with Gregg, which played a significant role in her departure from the screen.

It is not known who Melanie made an informal complaint about Gregg to.

Previously, Gregg had chosen to relinquish his hosting duties following almost two decades. This decision was made as accusations about insensitive remarks he supposedly made towards team members and high-profile guests during a span of 17 years were being examined.

The presenter has defended himself against all the allegations against him, pinning the blame on ‘middle class women of a certain age’.

However, on Monday, he issued an apology for his contentious remarks, acknowledging that he was not mentally well when he made the outburst.

Previously, Banijay UK stated that accusations had been lodged with the BBC by certain individuals regarding past instances of alleged misbehavior involving Gregg Wallace during the production of one of their shows.

The company said Wallace was ‘committed to fully co-operating throughout the process’.

The company stated that although these critics haven’t personally voiced their concerns to our show producers or Banijay UK, we believe it’s essential to initiate an immediate, unbiased investigation by an outside party to thoroughly examine the issues raised.

During the ongoing review, Gregg Wallace has decided to temporarily step back from his duties on MasterChef. He remains fully cooperative and dedicated to participating in the entire process.

On every production, Banijay UK places great importance on ensuring the well-being of their staff, and this commitment is consistently upheld. The guidelines concerning appropriate behavior are transparently communicated to both cast and crew members. There are numerous avenues available for expressing concerns, with anonymity being one of the options, which are openly publicized on set.

Although these accusations stem from the past, any instances that come to our notice where our standards aren’t upheld are thoroughly examined and handled in an appropriate manner.

TV host Kirstie Allsopp also stated that Gregg brought up a sexual topic about his partner within an hour after their initial encounter.

She shared with the Mail that the program ought to be suspended from broadcast if a significant number, or even most, of its crew members believed that was the appropriate course of action.

She said: ‘A television show is a team effort and therefore whether it goes out or not should be down to them.

‘If a majority of people on the show think it should not go ahead then it should come off air.

‘I love the BBC, but this is a really difficult problem for them.’
