Your Guide to Spotify Wrapped, 2024
As someone who has been dancing to the rhythm of Spotify for years now, I eagerly await the arrival of Spotify Wrapped every year. It’s not just about knowing who my top artists and songs are; it’s a fascinating journey into the soundtrack of my life over the past 12 months.
The end of the year is near, and the 2024 edition of Spotify Wrapped is here.
Over the years, starting from 2016, the annual summary of your most listened-to music – initially used as a marketing strategy – has grown into a popular cultural reference point. This concept has been adopted by competing streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, and even services like Duolingo and Reddit.
Spotify presents personalized information in an engaging, sharable format. The service comes with several exclusive features, such as artist video messages, “Your Music Evolution,” which examines how your music preferences have changed over the year, and innovative AI enhancements.
With the launch on Wednesday of this year’s Wrapped, here’s what to know.
How can users access their Spotify Wrapped for 2024?
As a movie reviewer, I’m excited to share that Spotify users, even those without Premium, can now immerse themselves in their personalized “Wrapped” experience right within the mobile or desktop app (ensure you have the latest version installed). The “Wrapped” feed will be prominently displayed on the app’s homepage and can also be accessed directly through this link. Enjoy a tailored journey down memory lane!
What’s new in the 2024 Wrapped?
As a movie buff diving into 2024’s Wrapped, I’m excited to share that this year, it unveils the “Your Music Evolution” feature! This innovative tool analyzes your listening habits to showcase how your music preferences have shifted throughout the year, breaking down up to three distinct musical eras defined by their unique genres and artists. Can’t wait to see my own musical journey unfold!
This year, users will have the opportunity to view the artist they listened to the most frequently, thanks to the Longest Listening Streak feature. Meanwhile, Spotify will reintroduce Top Listeners, a function that shows where you stand in terms of listener rank among fans of your preferred artist.
This year, AI is set to take on a larger part in Wrapped: it will create custom podcasts about your music preferences from this year. These podcasts will be narrated by AI hosts and developed using Google’s NotebookLM technology. Spotify announced that this feature will initially only be accessible to certain users in English, across Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, the UK, and the US, for a brief period.
Spotify plans to blend its annual “Wrapped” feature into its current advanced technologies, such as the AI DJ and AI Playlists. The AI DJ will share insights about a user’s listening habits over the year, even delving into their personal connection with the AI DJ itself. Moreover, the AI Playlists will empower Premium users to craft custom playlists using their “Wrapped” data, tailoring the music experience to suit their unique preferences.
Data tracking begins in January and ends a few weeks prior to launch.
The 2024 chart-toppers
Once again, Taylor Swift, named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2023, was the most-streamed artist globally on a particular platform, with over 26.6 billion plays. Trailing behind her were The Weeknd and Bad Bunny. (On this platform, a stream is recorded if a user listens for 30 seconds or longer.)
It’s no shock that Swift maintains the number one position on the most-streamed albums chart this year with her album “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology“. Female artists ruled Spotify’s list this year, as Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft” took second place, while Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet ” came in third.
Last year, John Carpenter’s “Espresso” topped the list of most-streamed songs, garnering over 1.6 billion plays. Following closely behind were “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone and Billie Eilish’s “BIRDS OF A FEATHER,” each earning significant streams in their respective positions.
For the fifth consecutive year, The Joe Rogan Experience maintains its position as Spotify’s most-listened-to podcast, while the streaming platform reveals its inaugural top-streamed audiobook in Premium – the fantasy-romance novel A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas.
How can I share—and judge—my listening habits?
Spotify invites its users to post their Wrapped outcomes on social networking platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which they’ve recently tailored special features for.
There are several external apps that you can link with Spotify, which can then evaluate your listening habits. For instance, How Bad Is Your Streaming Music? evaluates your music taste using AI, while Instafest creates a personalized music festival lineup based on your preferred artists. Lastly, Receiptify summarizes your listening statistics into a receipt-like format.
