Even though the musical was incredibly popular, the film adaptation didn’t necessarily guarantee a blockbuster at the box office. However, it astoundingly surpassed predictions to emerge as one of the most successful films this year.

Despite being surpassed by Moana 2 in the top spot, Wicked nonetheless secured the third highest five-day Thanksgiving earnings of all time, raking in a staggering $118.2 million. This impressive figure is usually reached during an opening weekend, but remarkably, Wicked managed to achieve this feat in its second weekend instead.

The film’s earnings amounted to $81.2 million during its second weekend from Friday to Sunday, demonstrating a modest decrease of just 28%. This exceptional retention rate is a record for films opening above $100 million.

The Broadway musical adaptation “Wicked” currently holds the record as the highest-grossing of its kind at the U.S. box office, and is poised to surpass the earnings of any non-Disney musical in the United States when it exceeds the $270.3 million grossed by “Sing.

Globally, it’s still a stretch to surpass the $584.5 million earnings of “Mamma Mia!” as the biggest stage-to-film adaptation, but if “Wicked” manages to rake in more than $400 million within the US (which appears quite likely unless there’s a significant downturn), it’ll breeze past that mark with ease. I can hardly wait!
