Marvel has revealed that the main storyline leading up to Avengers: Doomsday will surprisingly center around a familiar character – not Doctor Doom as many expected. This character will connect the events of the upcoming Marvel Rivals “Path to Doomsday” and could play a significant role in how the Multiverse Saga ends.
In a recent Q&A with D23, Danny Koo, executive producer of Marvel Rivals, explained that Loki will be central to the game’s ongoing story. The development team confirmed that their version of the God of Mischief is a key figure, driving a crossover storyline that connects directly to the events leading up to Doomsday. This is important because it suggests that while Doctor Doom is the major villain, Loki will be the one manipulating events behind the scenes.

What Koo said highlights that Loki isn’t simply a character you can play in Marvel Rivals. He’s actually influencing the story of the game itself.
Loki is central to everything happening – he’s the character who will connect all the different storylines.
That’s a bold claim, particularly considering many expected the story to revolve around Doctor Doom. However, Marvel seems determined to emphasize Loki’s significance across the multiverse, building on his journey from a chaotic villain to a being with almost limitless cosmic knowledge.
This fits with Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) story arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because he’s already dealt with different timelines and versions of himself, and understands how fragile the Multiverse is, he’s become a key player in what happens next. Bringing that importance to the game Marvel Rivals could create a connection between the games and movies, making the stakes feel higher in both.
The story also hints that Loki might know something about, be influencing, or even be responsible for the events before Avengers: Doomsday. It’s still unknown if he’s trying to stop a disaster or accidentally making it happen, but his position as a central “link” suggests he’s connected to every part of the conflict.

Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. (known for his role as Iron Man), would seem like the natural focus of a movie called Avengers: Doomsday. However, Marvel choosing to center the story around Loki suggests they’re aiming for a more complex and nuanced narrative.
Focusing the story on Loki prevents it from simply repeating Avengers: Infinity War, which centered on a villain’s pursuit of power. Instead, the narrative explores the breakdown of reality, viewed through the eyes of someone—Loki—who deeply understands the Multiverse.
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Loki has experienced fractured timelines, met different versions of himself, and even found a position that affects the very fabric of reality. Because of all this, he’s the perfect character to help viewers understand the complicated and unpredictable events that are about to unfold.
Although Loki helps bring things together, especially in Marvel games, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie from Marvel Studios promises a huge cast of characters who will be central to both the story’s action and its emotional impact.

After a seven-year absence following Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his return is expected to be deeply emotional. The story will likely focus on a very personal mission for Rogers, potentially involving his child with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
Steve Rogers’ comeback is expected to significantly impact those who fought with him during the battle against Thanos, especially now that Sam Wilson is the new Captain America. Even though Steve and Tony Stark often disagreed, seeing someone with Tony’s face as a major threat will likely be a deeply emotional experience for him.

Similar to Steve Rogers becoming a father figure, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) now has a daughter, Love (India Hemsworth), whom he adopted in Thor: Love and Thunder. If Doom is gathering children with special abilities for a future plan in Avengers: Doomsday, Love would be a likely target, potentially giving Thor a personal reason to fight against him, much like Steve Rogers’ motivations.
As a longtime follower of the MCU, I’m anticipating a really interesting dynamic in the new film. Thor hasn’t had any contact with Loki since his brother seemingly sacrificed himself at the start of Infinity War, so seeing Loki back – and now going by the name “God of Stories” – is going to be a huge shock for him. I expect a mix of relief, confusion, and maybe even a little bit of disbelief from Thor as he tries to process what’s going on.

Doctor Doom remains a powerful and intimidating presence, but his current plans are unclear. He’s one of Marvel’s most dangerous and fascinating villains, and is likely working towards either triggering or stopping a major disaster.
It doesn’t matter if Doctor Doom is using the kidnapped children as a source of power, or if he’s manipulating events to bring the Avengers back together for a sinister plan – his influence will be central to the story, even if we don’t experience it directly through his perspective.

Okay, let’s talk about Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal. He’s the brains of the operation, truly. As Marvel’s top scientist, he’s the only one who seems able to grasp what’s happening with this whole Multiversal mess and maybe even figure out how to fix it. He’s the one character who can actually understand the science behind the chaos, which is a huge relief, honestly.
At the conclusion of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Doctor Doom knelt before Franklin Richards, Reed Richards’ son. This suggests Franklin, a uniquely powerful mutant, will be important to Doom’s future schemes. This could create a difficult situation, forcing someone to choose between saving Doom’s son and either defeating Doom himself or preventing a multiversal catastrophe – a dilemma similar to the central conflict in the Fantastic Four movie.

Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, provides a relatable and human element as the story of Thunderbolts heads toward increasingly fantastical and complex events. Her connection with Bob (Lewis Pullman) and her own struggles with depression could be key to resolving the coming challenges.
Even though Yelena is a highly skilled Black Widow, Doctor Doom is a powerful enemy. It will be interesting to see how she and the rest of the New Avengers handle him in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, is now Wakanda’s Black Panther and its most innovative thinker, responsible for the country’s advanced technology as a major crisis develops. Still grieving the deaths of her brother, T’Challa, and mother, Queen Ramonda, she’s expected to seek support from M’Baku, the current king of Wakanda.
Shuri is incredibly intelligent and skilled with Vibranium, making her a powerful asset, even when facing threats from across the multiverse. This remains true despite the emergence of a new, even more durable metal linked to the X-Men.

Okay, so after his debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi might be way more important to the bigger Marvel picture than we thought. There’s been a lot of talk about how he was originally going to be central to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty – which, sadly, isn’t happening now. But it looks like those powerful Rings he wields, and the strange signal they send out, are now going to connect directly to the story of Doctor Doom. It seems Marvel has big plans for Shang-Chi and how he fits into the unfolding multiverse saga!
Shang-Chi is a powerful hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, skilled in martial arts, wielding the Ten Rings, and connected to the dragon spirit of Ta Lo. However, it’s difficult to see him winning in a fight against Marvel’s most famous villains.
