The shock reason why Rebecca Maddern’s long-time Channel Seven co-host Mike Amor was a no-show on her final day
As an ardent follower of Australian news, I must say, watching Rebecca Maddern’s emotional farewell from her weekend gig at Seven News Melbourne was a bittersweet moment. Her long-time co-host Mike Amor missing her final show due to illness was undeniably unfortunate, but it just adds more flavor to their bond as colleagues and friends.
Over the weekend, Mike Amor, who has co-hosted with Rebecca Maddern at Seven News Melbourne for a while, was unable to attend her heartfelt goodbye due to falling ill and catching an illness.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but reflect on the heartfelt goodbye of Maddern, aged 47, who parted ways with her long-standing television role last Sunday in a deeply emotional sendoff. However, her cherished co-anchor Amor, now 57, was noticeably absent from her side during this poignant moment.
Later on, Amor shared his sorrow on Instagram about not being able to be there for his colleague during her farewell, as he had suddenly fallen ill and was unable to attend.
Mike lamented not being able to spend one final Sunday at his desk with his friend Rebecca, as he was stuck home due to a pesky case of whooping cough, leaving him to watch from the comfort of the couch instead.
‘Thanks for all the laughs in the ad breaks – and occasional controversy.’
In a flawless conclusion, Maddern’s last performance was smooth sailing. Later on, she expressed gratitude towards her team via social media, acknowledging their support ever since she assumed this role in January 2022.
Instead, let’s note that Bec will continue within the network, advancing her career by securing a prominent position at 7News in 2025.
It was announced last month that the esteemed sports journalist will now serve as the main sports anchor for Seven.
On Sunday, she bid farewell to her old gig in an emotional post to Instagram.
Here’s how that sentence could be rephrased: ‘I’ve spent the last three years working on weekends, bringing you the 6 pm news on @7news,’ she posted.
Working with @mikeoz7, @abbeygelmi, and @soniamarinelli has been a blast, and I’m incredibly proud of the product we’ve launched on the air. (She added further)
There are numerous individuals including producers, directors, reporters, teleprompter operators, and makeup artists whom I’d like to express gratitude towards, for dedicating their Saturdays and Sundays with me.
To everyone who’s been tuning in, we truly appreciate your viewership! It’s an incredible group we have here. As for me, I won’t be going too far – I’ll still be right here at the same desk, but in a different chair, continuing to lead our fantastic sports team from Monday to Friday in the year 2025.
‘Thank you to my wonderful weekend team. Merry Christmas and have a happy and safe New Year’.
Instead of traveling far, Maddern will stay put as she takes on a new role, where she will deliver the nightly sports news for Channel 7 Melbourne.
In her statement to the Herald Sun, she mentioned that throughout her career, she has been involved with sports and news. Interestingly, her earliest professional role was within the realm of sports at Triple M while she was still quite young.
This job seems perfectly tailored for me. It offers opportunities to step away from the office, explore different locations, and interact with sports enthusiasts – something I’m passionate about. Overall, this position holds great appeal, and I’m eagerly anticipating it.
Over the course of my career in media, I’ve had the good fortune to fill various roles. Each new position offers me a fresh spark and allows me to apply the extensive knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years.
Maddern was the co-presenter of 7News at 6pm on weekends alongside Mike Amor.
Karina Carvalho, the latest addition to our team from ABC, could be in line to replace Maddern during weekends.
