Chris Hemsworth & Tom Holland’s Big Budget Disappointment Creature Feature Finds Redemption on Streaming 11 Years Later

Viewers on Prime Video are discovering “In the Heart of the Sea.” The 2015 film, featuring Tom Holland and Chris Hemsworth, is now gaining popularity on the Amazon streaming platform.

According to FlixPatrol, In the Heart of the Sea is currently the tenth most popular movie on Prime Video in the U.S. as of January 26th. The film has reappeared on the platform’s Top 10 list after fluctuating between the tenth and seventh spots last week.

In the Heart of the Sea’s Events Inspired Moby-Dick

The movie In the Heart of the Sea is based on a true story detailed in Nathaniel Philbrick’s 2000 book, In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The book recounts the 1820 sinking of the whaling ship Essex, an event that famously inspired Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick.

Ben Whishaw plays Herman Melville in the film. The story centers around Melville hearing the story of the Essex‘s sinking from Thomas Nickerson. Brendan Gleeson plays the older Nickerson, and Tom Holland portrays him as a young sailor on the ship.

The historical adventure film stars Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, and Michelle Fairley, alongside Chris Hemsworth who plays Owen Chase, the first mate of the Essex. Ron Howard directed the movie, based on a screenplay by Charles Leavitt.

Even with a famous cast and an Academy Award-winning director, the film In the Heart of the Sea didn’t do well in theaters. It only earned $94.3 million globally, falling short of its $100 million production cost.

Despite its challenges, the film In the Heart of the Sea ultimately benefited Tom Holland, as Chris Hemsworth revealed in 2019 that it played a part in him getting the role.

We worked together on In the Heart of the Sea, and then on the Avengers films. When he was being considered for Spider-Man, I did what I could to help and put in a good word for him. I told everyone he’s incredibly talented, kind, and appreciative. We’ve become great friends and have a lot of respect for each other.

Even though Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland are friends, their characters, Thor and Spider-Man, haven’t actually appeared together in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. They were both in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but they never shared any scenes with each other.

Things might shift with the next Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars. Chris Hemsworth will definitely be in them, and there’s strong talk that Tom Holland will be too. It’s still uncertain if they’ll actually share any screen time together.
