Yellowstone season 5 episode 12 recap: Counting Coup
As a longtime fan of the gritty Western drama Yellowstone, I must admit that this week’s episode was both heart-wrenching and action-packed. With my years of experience watching cowboy shows, I can say with confidence that the Dutton family is going through some tough times, but they’re handling it with the same tenacity and resilience we’ve come to expect from them.
In episode 12 of Yellowstone, attention now solely focuses on Jamie following Sarah Atwood’s departure. Last week, we saw signs of Jamie beginning to fall apart, and this week, it seems as if every corner is trapping the Dutton who wreaked havoc on everything around him.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: In the heat of battle, counting coup is my strategy for outsmarting an adversary and establishing dominance without causing harm. It’s all about displaying courage when faced with opposition and hoping that my enemy will surrender rather than fight to the death. Just like Jamie, I understand the importance of minimizing casualties whenever possible. Kayce Dutton is closing in on revealing who Sarah Atwood hired – we know he doesn’t want to hurt Jamie, unlike Beth, but we’re unsure how far Jamie will go when backed into a corner by the wolf.
The episode begins with Colby and Teeter having a heartfelt phone conversation where he tells her those three special words. It’s evident that their affection for each other runs deeper than they often show. Of course, Colby tries to downplay it, but his expression reveals something else entirely. Among Rip, Beth, they are the most endearing couple on the screen. Teeter discusses her ambitious future plans, and it’s hoped that we will get to witness more of her in the upcoming episodes.
Lloyd and Carter discuss potential outcomes for Yellowstone if a new owner appears, with Lloyd suggesting he would leave if a billionaire takes over. Rip instructs them to prepare their horses for sale since they need to liquidate everything to save the business. The ranch is doing everything possible to protect the land, so all else must be sold as well.
Jimmy has made significant progress, but Travis continues to tease him relentlessly. Now, Jimmy is attempting to become a horse trainer, which might seem unusual given his struggles with managing himself. This new endeavor of Jimmy’s appears quite eccentric, as he often struggles even with his own responsibilities.
In the vast expanse of Texas, I’m known as one of the cold-hearted folks, but old Travis shared some valuable wisdom with me, Jimmy. It’s up to me now to absorb it and use it to my advantage – outrun the advice, if you will. I know John was a cowboy, and missing work isn’t an option for us.
Jamie’s time has come to a head
Initially, the investigators interrogate Jamie. The pressure mounts on him as they sense Sarah Atwood’s presence in town for business purposes, and it won’t be long before they realize that Sarah was specifically hired to bring down the Dutton family. Despite not having a warrant, the detectives find Jamie’s behavior highly suspicious. His father’s murder now casts him as a suspect, yet he could have avoided this predicament by complying with their demands. However, his overbearing arrogance has led him into an irreversible situation. As soon as the police depart to obtain a warrant, Jamie promptly begins disposing of any incriminating evidence to avoid future complications.
Monica and Beth, an unexpected duo, prepared breakfast together. Meanwhile, the detective phoned Kayce to inform him that his suspect was unwilling to collaborate. Kayce is uncertain about Jamie’s involvement in John’s demise, but he believes Sarah Atwood might be responsible for it. He no longer feels any empathy towards Jamie. Regardless of whether he directly requested the hit or not, Kayce placed himself in that position. The challenge lies with what Jamie may have witnessed. If kept quiet, he could potentially squeal like a bird; such a man who possesses knowledge of all Dutton secrets could bring down their empire.
The whole world is watching. Jamie is in the blast zone. Kayce Dutton thinks they should let the law handle it. He’s already being surrounded. Beth, on the other hand, knows what has to be done. They will have to take him down before he causes any more damage to the family, the ranch, or its future.
Yellowstone season 5 episode 12 ending explained
In Texas, they’re gathering segments of their cattle herd to commence selling. It was an enjoyable journey for Teeter and Walker during the time they had, but I find myself questioning the direction this tale is taking. It seems a bit disappointing to invest effort and finances into leasing land in Texas only to depart before making much progress.
In this scenario, Carter finds himself in a dangerous situation with a ferocious stallion when attempting to give it water. Colby rushes to help but is struck by the horse’s kick in his abdomen. With the horse about to crush Colby, Carter steps in, armed with a shotgun. However, it’s too late as the horse inflicts a fatal wound on Colby with a gunshot to the chest. Regrettably, both the horse and Colby end up injured in this tragic incident. Yet another day of hardship and sorrow on the Yellowstone ranch.
In Texas, Rip telephones Ryan regarding his friend’s demise, a topic that seems to remove any future hope for Teeter, as it involves her losing her love. Witnessing Teeter collapse at this news was heart-rending. I can’t fathom why Taylor Sheridan chose to write this scenario, given all the trials and tribulations Teeter and Colby have faced while safeguarding the ranch.
Colby did get to go out a hero but I’m really disappointed in how this season is ending so far.
What will the outcome bring?
Beth enters the bunkhouse to gather Colby’s belongings. Lloyd guides her, stressing there’s no need to hurry with clearing his items away. Yet, it seems his mother needs them. Only a few books and some equipment remain, symbolizing what he brought into existence.
As Carter, I’m finding it tough to shake off the burden of guilt following Colby’s selfless act that saved me. Beth, ever the confidante, begins to unveil parts of her past she’s been ashamed of. It’s heartwarming to see our bond deepen in this moment. Frankly, it feels like ages since we last shared a scene together. Despite the weight of guilt that’s settled upon me, Beth expresses gratitude for what I did. She makes it clear that I should uphold my sacrifice. And in a gentle yet firm tone, she mentions she’ll stick around tonight, just in case I might need the comfort of family. When I jest about not having a family, she replies with a soft smile, “Oh, you do.
On the opposite side, Rip is suppressing his feelings about losing Colby so swiftly following the loss of John. He wasn’t simply another cowhand; he was kin. Beth implores to understand what he requires to handle his pain and remorse, but all he requires is space and her. He laments that he could not shield Carter, but he also acknowledges this work can be lethal, potentially claiming him as well in the future. A profession that might well do so.
Now, Kayce has figured out the tasks at hand. With a goodbye to Monica for tonight, he assures her that his actions are not just about the ranch’s welfare, but for their shared wellbeing too.
Following a soccer match, Kayce leaps into Grant’s vehicle and aims a firearm at his child. Unaware of her father’s profession, she is obviously bewildered. Perhaps it was an excessive move, but he felt compelled to demonstrate his authority. If Grant continues towards the Duttons, every family member will face death, he warns. He is well-versed in Grant’s life and activities. It seems more like a veiled threat than a true truce, and now Kayce holds the advantage, having effectively asserted dominance over Grant. In essence, he has outmaneuvered him and secured victory.
