I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic TV, and what I really love is when shows like Station Eleven don’t just fall into the trap of making everything bleak or simply copying what’s been done before. They really find new angles! But when it comes to dystopian shows, it feels like we get the same thing over and over – usually some kind of dark, futuristic capitalist world that all looks pretty much the same. It’s a shame, because I think that subgenre could be a lot more imaginative.
Sometimes a TV show comes along that truly stands out and reshapes its genre, becoming a blueprint for others to follow. While strong reviews aren’t always necessary for this to happen, they certainly help, and Snowpiercer was a great example – especially in its first two seasons, which many compare to the show Silo.
Snowpiercer’s Setting Was An Ambitious Feat For The Sci-Fi Dystopian Genre
The sci-fi series Snowpiercer is notable for being better than the book it started from—a 1982 French graphic novel called Le Transperceneige. This story also inspired the critically acclaimed 2013 film Snowpiercer by Bong Joon-ho, and the subsequent TV show. While the book, movie, and show all differ in quality, they share a unique setting.
The series Snowpiercer takes place seven years after an ice age has devastated the planet. The last people alive live on a massive train that constantly travels around the world. The show focuses on the passengers and uses the confined space to examine important themes like class conflict, social fairness, and the struggle to survive.
Many fantastic films take place in a single location, and Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer is a prime example, receiving high praise from critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes). But while filming a two-hour movie on a train is challenging, creating a four-season, 40-episode TV show entirely in one place is a remarkably bold move. Fortunately, it paid off.
Why Snowpiercer Is Still Worth Watching Despite Ending In 2024
Beyond its incredibly unique setting, Snowpiercer is a compelling dystopian series. The show excels at creating a detailed and believable world, complete with memorable characters. It cleverly blends the suspense of a murder mystery with thought-provoking social commentary, all unfolding on a massive, perpetually moving train – a truly fresh take on the dystopian genre.
The first couple of seasons of Snowpiercer created a really tense and gripping atmosphere. Although many feel the show dropped in quality after that, the core idea remains thrilling. The story centers around a rebellion by the lower classes against the powerful and unfair leaders who control a train carrying the last of humanity.
Despite issues with the writing, speed, and character decisions in the later seasons of Snowpiercer, the show was still carried by strong performances. Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly consistently received praise for their acting and the compelling development of their characters’ relationship.
All 4 Seasons Of Snowpiercer Are Available On Tubi To Watch For Free
As a sci-fi fan, I’ve been spending a lot of time lately looking beyond the usual suspects – Netflix, Apple TV+, Prime Video – and honestly, I’ve found a real gem in Tubi. While those bigger platforms get all the buzz, Tubi is seriously underrated. Netflix is starting to frustrate me with its tendency to cut promising sci-fi shows too soon, and Apple TV+, though it has some incredible titles, still feels incomplete when it comes to a truly comprehensive sci-fi library. If you’re a genre enthusiast, you really owe it to yourself to check out what Tubi has to offer.

Tubi has a great selection of classic sci-fi shows, including all four seasons of Snowpiercer. While inspired by the same idea as the popular film, the Snowpiercer TV series tells a new story with different characters, making it enjoyable even if you’ve already seen the movie.
